Sometimes you really want to help them out, but whenever possible, we don’t intervene. Raising confident problem solvers! #malagasycotonpreservationclub #bestdogever #mcpcbreeder #malagasycoton #cotondetulear #embarktested #puppiesofinstagram #
The puppies are starting to become more active and they’re also allowing Dottie to get a few short breaks. Joan really likes the heating pad, even if that means she’s by herself!
ENS, Day 1
The puppies are 3 days old and have not been stressed by a hard delivery, difficulties nursing, etc, so we started Early Neurological Stimulation tonight. Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) involves applying gentle stressors to a very young pup for short periods of time. It is thought to improve their stress responses later in life. The stressors—which include removing puppies from their litters for short periods, very briefly exposing them to cool temperatures, holding them in different positions, and gently touching parts of their bodies—are applied for a few seconds, once a day, from days 3-16.
When you’re trying to master a new skill (automatic sit beside you inside of in front of you), but your butt just won’t stay still!
Training serves so many purposes…helps to make your puppy/dog feel secure because they learn what kind of behaviors are desired/expected, provides mental stimulation, and is a great opportunity to have fun and bond with your companion! Pick a trainer who loves working with animals, uses only positive reinforcement, understands the psychology behind dog behaviors, and is willing to share their knowledge so you can do the work at home. If you’re local, there’s no one better than the team at @dogsandkattraining. I’ve been taking classes with them for almost 9 years and I learn something new every time I go! #malagasycoton #mcpcbreeder #malagasycotonpreservationclub #bestdogever #positivereinforcementtraining
April, now known as Meli, is a city gal! Her family writes:
Meli is doing great. This Friday she finished a 3 week agility course and she picked up on all the skills really quickly, and just loved it. We will be continuing with Agility II classes in a couple of weeks. She also just spent an overnight with my cousin’s children and she was “a rockstar”. The youngest child unfortunately has a fear of canines after being attacked by a rabid fox, but by a few hours she was petting Meli, walking her, and giving her treats!
Best $20 bucks I’ve ever spent in a puppy toy! She plays with it for 45 minutes at a time, 2-3x/day!
Sound desensitization continues for the pups who are being picked up a little later. Today’s sound: tornado siren.
Mental Stimulation, Part 3
Part 3
We’ve been doing some scent work so they know exactly what to do!
Mental Stimulation, Part 2
Part 2
The pups are excited but are still politely manding!
Getting for Adventure, Part 1
Part 1
It’s ridiculously hot so we can’t take the pups outside and they need lots of mental stimulation at this age so we created a more advanced treat trail/sniffy adventure for them.
