Heel is NOT necessary if you teach proper leash skills.

You can simply teach a dog not to pull and they’ll have the freedom to walk on either side of you, in front of you or behind you without any issues!

Stop over complicating training with unnecessary words, equipment or rules. Leash rules should be just like walking hand and hand with a child. Don’t pull on me or I’ll pull back. Keep pulling on me and we’ll stop and fix the situation before moving on.

The key word is: STOP. Don’t try walking and pulling at the same time. Stop walking, use quick and firm tugs on the leash (NOT continuous pulling) until your dog stops pulling and gives you a loose leash. Then resume walking.

Not all muzzles are the same and not all dogs require muzzles forever!

A muzzle is a training device and a safety item. It’s important to constantly set new goals and expectations for both you and your pup. Without goals you’ll rely on devices like a muzzle instead of achieving the inevitable milestone of never needing one.

Training devices should be used less and less over time and/or not at all in time. That’s why they’re training devices. You don’t see training wheels on adult bicycles! You have not been trained properly if you have spent years with a muzzled dog without much improvement.

If you are not willing to change, your dog can’t change. We encourage NO muzzles, NO baby gates, NO e-collars, NO prong collars and NO medications (Prozac, Zoloft, Xanax, etc). To get to NO, you have to change yourself and your goals. Obviously, many will need some of these training items during the training/transition period.

Stop putting off a better life for your dog!

A less stressful life for you and your dog is so much closer than you realized. Find a trainer who holds themselves accountable and guarantees to get you results.

Dog Bus in action!

Dogs now have a new way to enjoy the ride in and out of daycare or for boarding. We find dogs prefer the comfort of sprawling out on the floor or cuddling with a pal versus sliding around on vinyl bench seats. We also adapted a kennel space for those who’d prefer some alone time.

This is just one of many changes we have in store for 2024. We’re looking forward to helping even more pups and their families in the years to come.

Dogs should NOT be allowed in your kitchen while you prep food!

There is nothing wrong with setting boundaries and restricting dogs from areas in your home. You don’t need gates, you need to teach “no” and “down”.

Del can’t get into this room because I’ve instructed her to a “down” position. If she gets up I’ll calmly say “no”, then move her out of the room and instruct her to the “down” position again. I’ll repeat this 100 times if needed because a lesson is not complete until it’s properly followed. I’m not in a rush to teach her how to be a well behaved dog. It takes time, practice and most importantly… consistency

You can’t teach a dog and do something else simultaneously. What you miss here is that my eggs are overcooked and my toast is cold because my priority is Del, not my breakfast. I’m teaching first and eating second!

Make your dog the priority and you’ll find great results come quickly. Don’t and you’ll struggle forever.

Rehabilitation done at the highest level.

3 rehabilitation pups and 1 peer mentor

Duke is still going through his rehab with us, thus the muzzle. Summer and Ralphie (both down) are prior success stories that would have never been able to handle this situation prior to our commitment to them or their families dedication of finding more than the typical trainer. Willow is our lead translator and hands down the best peer mentor a dog could have.

Most dogs lack socialization skills and revert to anxiety or aggression as a coping mechanism. With calm and confident guidance we modify their current behaviors to reflect what is more acceptable.

What we doing isn’t a miracle, but it’s incredibly rewarding for everyone involved, especially for the dogs!

An inexpensive way to help those around you understand that your dog isn’t interested in meeting them or their pup.

Products like this shouldn’t be necessary, but they are!

Respect a dog’s personal space as you should any strangers personal space.

When asked “is your dog friendly”, simply reply “no” and let that be it!

Never expect someone to do the right thing. Be proactive, prepared and help your pup avoid confrontations before they arise.

Appropriate dog care is about prioritizing your dogs mental and physical health. In some situations that will require being assertive toward your family, friends or even strangers.

How does your dog do when visiting the veterinarian?

If the answer is not great. You should work on lie “down” because it’s the best solution for this scenario and most of you other situations.

Dozer had to make an unexpected visit to his vet today because of a small growth on the inside of his eyelid. We opted for a quick removal without biopsy. At 9+ years old I don’t like putting him or other massive breeds through lengthy surgery or anesthesia just to find out if this mass is cancerous. We’ll address that issue if the growth comes back or he has other symptoms. So far his heart sounds good, he’s acting healthy and doing well! Growth was easily and least invasively removed in just 10 minutes.

We offer the same straightforward, honest advice that we use for our own pups. We love our dogs, but we realize sometimes finding answers can cause more issues than solutions!

It’s not how old you are, it’s how calm and consistent you are. Olivia’s just 14, but one of the best trainers you’ll ever meet!

Tony’s a HUGE dog and requires a calm, steady leader to help him feel comfortable. A dog this size freaks out and he’ll put you on your face. Not going to happen with Olivia.

If you want to make real progress with your pup, everyone in the house needs to be applying the same words, expectations and corrections. Even a bad weather day lends itself a great opportunity to practice.

Don’t keep putting off important changes. No dog is too old to learn new tricks. You’ll always appreciate better manners at any age.

Have you ever randomly walk up to a stranger with your child and asked someone else with a child…

Why would your dog be interested in meeting an unknown dog randomly for just seconds?

Even if it goes well, what is the benefit? Socializing a dog means letting them get to know each other, playing and growing comfortable with each other. NOT thrusting a dog in its face for a few seconds.

Hate the messenger all you’d like, but for the benefit of your dog, please stop this behavior!

It’s with great sadness we say goodbye to our snowman after finding him floating inside our dog pool. A full autopsy has yet to be performed to determine if this was accidental or intentional…

Tick season 2024 is expected to worse than any prior year!

Due to a very mild winter, ticks are expected to be prevalent in most of Vermont. Unfortunately, that means Lyme disease is likely to become a larger issue with people and pets. There are a variety of preventatives available, but many have their own potential side effects and/or limited success.

Our #1 recommendation is to avoid areas where ticks are abundant and check those areas regularly. We have halted our trail hikes temporarily due to a high presence of ticks along the wooded trails we use. We regularly test our property and the areas we walk or hike to ensure the safest conditions for the dogs. Ticks can be abundant within a yard, woods or even along the edge of sidewalks. Regularly check your pups after they’re outside and remove any ticks asap.

Ticks are not just a nuisance. They are a potentially life ending pest!

This is the one and only time you’ll hear us recommending avoidance as the BEST solution! Don’t risk your health or your dogs health because you think your dog needs a hike in the woods. Sometimes we have to alter our habits and routines just to be safe!

What do we do?
We recommend everyone make choices based on their comfort level. We regularly blow or rake all leaves away from the 1 acre property the dogs have regular access to and maintain the vegetation. We spray the perimeter of our property (not where the dogs can go) with a Permethrin and water mixture. We apply Vectra 3D monthly to our 3 dogs and we limit their exposure to the woods until I’ve tested the areas for ticks. One of our dogs got Lyme disease while using Frontline Plus and another time using natural (organic) products, but this could be an isolated case. However, we stopped using those products and opted for an equally dangerous product. Sometimes no choice is 100% safe, but we hope to make the safest one for us.

Be aware, check regularly and be safe.

Can you imagine parents going to a child trainer? Nope…

I hope someday we don’t need dog trainers!

Dog training is more about common sense and not overthinking it. Don’t encourage bad behaviors and don’t teach new skills until a dog is ready.

Dogs who trust, love and respect their people require little guidance. They simply watch, learn and don’t run away….

The dog industry doesn’t like that answer because they profit off your failures. Dog pulls, sell a harness. Dog bites, sell a muzzle. Dog runs away, sell an AirTag. Dog barks and sell a bark collar.

We have so many more dog issues in America because we sell too many techniques that confuse people and their dogs. We should teach stuff that’s natural to dogs and easy for people to learn so they can pay it forward! I learn and teach you . Then you teach your circle and so on

There will always be a need for some dog training and many of the training devices. However, we should use all these things with the expectation to train our way out of them. Not rely on them forever.

Stop buying the solution, spend more time with your dog!

Leash training 101

You don’t want to start training a dog to walk on a leash! You need to train proper leash behavior. Teaching a dog not to pull against you on a leash will solve any leash issues, including walking….

Don’t let trainers fool you into thinking there’s more to it than just basic “don’t pull on me and I won’t pull on you”.

We don’t allow someone to pull our arm off when walking hand and hand. Don’t allow the same thing when your dog’s on a leash. They tug on you, you stop and tug back… don’t keep moving, stop and tug back until then stop behaving poorly. Then move on and repeat as necessary.

When done properly a dog can and should be leash trained in 2 weeks or less.

Heel is a position, not a training method!

Gimmicks sell well and solve nothing.

Puppy Breeder vs Rescue Puppy

Nothing compares to the satisfaction of saving a dog’s life. If you’re considering adding a new puppy or dog to your house please remember that dog breeders reproduce dogs for sale while hundreds of thousands of dogs are being euthanized each year in this country.

Don’t agree, oh well. Don’t like that fact, neither do we!

Begging… UGH One word can solve nearly all of your behavioral issues. That word is “no”. Stop overthinking training and make it easier for your dog to understand what you want. If you’re not correcting the behavior they’re doing, then it’s acceptable. If you calmly say “no” and reinforce it, they’ll quickly learn that’s a behavior you don’t approve of. DON’T reward them for stopping the behavior. It’s not necessary and gives mixed messages. Only reward after you give a command for an activity you want them to do for you like lying down “down”. What makes a dog a good peer mentor? Many factors play into that, but overall a lot of confidence and calm in extreme situations. Willow exemplifies that better than all others! Watch Willow as she is the first dog to freely run around and play with our 170+ pound, 4’ tall anxious/aggressive rehab client Tony. All other dogs show fear and anxiety as this behemoth enters, but Willow understands no such fear. She’s been well trained to understand our job as people is to look out for dogs. That gives her the ability to feel comfort and lead others through challenging times. We have weeks to go with Tony, but I expect Willow to continue doing what she’s done time and time again over the years and that is to teach something no human can….
