A very special new member of my family came home a little less than 2 weeks ago and I am so thrilled to tell you guys all about him!! All the way from Saskatchewan, Canada, meet “Levon” (pronounced Lee-Vaughn). He is my new partner in training and he’s an amazing little guy! Levon is actually the son of Sheamus, my last Service Dog and it is an honor to be able to have a little legacy of my heart dog. Levon will be replacing Sheamus as my Service Dog because Sheamus had a freak-accident injury that led to him no longer being with us. 😔 There are so many similarities between this baby and his dad that it shocks me by the hour. It’s really like my Sheamus produced a clone of himself and sent him home to me.. I’ll share his service dog training progress here for you guys. Thank you so much, MorningDew Danes for giving me the opportunity to bring this boy home and train him as my next service dog! He is absolutely perfect and you did such a great job with these babies. He’s the sweetest little snugglebug and SO smart!! Sheamus would be proud of his son.

Meet Freya!! She is a new board and train Service Dog Prospect (after a rather long training hiatus) and we are SO excited to have her here! She is a purebred German Shepherd from Country Acres' Shepherds and does not yet have a handler that we will be training for, but her training has already started and she is off to a PHENOMENAL start!! She has so much potential and I am SO excited for my journey with her! For now, we are working towards the CGC exam guidelines and then we will start some task training. She is incredibly smart and very very loyal and has such a great drive to learn. We'll post her progress here for you guys to follow along, so welcome, Freya!

This is going to be very long winded, so long story short, this is to explain why it’s not ok to falsify your pets as Service Dogs or Emotional Support Animals in order to get passed certain non-pet-friendly regulations. It is also to explain everything about working dogs for new people trying to learn the correct information that is otherwise hard to find.

TLDR? This is explaining the difference between Therapy Dogs, Emotional Support Animals, and Service Dogs and explaining the laws on each and then explaining why Service Dogs and ESAs are so important to people with disabilities and how it truly affects the entire disabled community when someone with a pet illegally falsifies their pet as an ESA or Service Animal in order to bypass health and safety regulations and rules against taking your pets everywhere.

So here we go. An Educational post about Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals needed to be made because there is an ongoing epidemic of people faking their pets as Service Dogs and/or Emotional Support Animals and there really needs to be a post explaining the difference and why it’s not ok to do that even when you think it’s not affecting anybody but yourself. So here is a Q&A explanation for everybody. Please feel free to leave me a comment or send me a message if you have any questions.

Unfortunately, for people trying to learn about ESAs and Service Dogs, the first 5-10 links are always for fake registrations! The law regarding them isn’t even on the first page when you search “Service Dogs” when you’re trying to learn… That’s why there is such a problem with fakes and people using those scam sites to register their dogs… So hopefully this post will help to educate people who are truly trying to learn.

Let me start by saying there is NO registration or Certification for Service Dogs or Emotional Support Animals. They DO NOT EXIST. Any registration thing you find online is a scam, specifically designed to take your $100+ and send you a worthless piece of paper that means absolutely nothing. No business or landlord can ever ask for a registration, certification, or ID card (because there are no legitimate such things).

Let me start by explaining the difference between ESA, Service Dog, and Therapy Dogs..

Therapy Animals are any breed of animal that is trained to go into places like hospitals, nursing homes, or places where they are invited to provide comfort to a large group of people and brighten their day. Therapy Dogs are NOT permitted into places of business where pets are not allowed. There is a certification for Therapy Dogs and there are multiple organizations for that such as Therapy Dogs International (TDI). Therapy Dogs must pass a test in order to legally be considered a Therapy Dog. Therapy Dogs are for MULTIPLE people and their purpose is to bring joy. This is NOT to be confused with Emotional Support Animals or Service Dogs. Those are 3 very different jobs. Therapy Dogs are NOT granted housing exceptions and they are not permitted on airplanes as anything other than “pets”. That being said, Therapy Dogs are a wonderful thing and really bring a lot of happiness to people in hospitals and nursing homes who are not able to have animals where they are.
