*** Downtime Notice ***
Dear Breed Archive community,
We would like to inform you that we are planning a major system update for our Breed Archives on Thursday, 29 August 2024, which will result in a downtime of about one to three hours, depending on the archive. We will do our best to keep the outage as short as possible.
Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Responsible animal breeding is based on many factors, two of which are health and genetics. That's why we put a lot of effort into providing pedigree and health analysis in the Breed Archives.

Today we are happy to contribute another piece to support precise and sustainable breeding choices with our partnership with FERAGEN, a certified laboratory for genetic veterinary diagnostics in Austria.

The agile and smart Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers have recently joined our Breed Archive! Special thanks to Amy from k9data for entrusting her database to us.

Please find the migration instructions below:

—————————

Dogs
In principle, all dogs from the k9data have been migrated and
are available on the new platform. We have skipped invalid data or
extremely incomplete data, e.g. if there was not even a
name.

Persons (Breeders, Owners)
We migrated a substantial part of this, but as the k9data system had
free-text fields for breeder and owner, this resulted in same persons written
in many different ways in the "Breeder", "Owner" textfields. We used automatic
routines and subsequent complex manual mappings to try - especially with
the breeders - to transfer the same persons - from the many different
spellings in the k9data - to the Breed Archive only once.

Photos
The Breed Archive does not embed photos from external web resource links
due to both copyright reasons and unavailability of remote websites.
Therefore we did migrate the photo links to the notes field.
Users can of course still upload photos from there later if they hold
the necessary copyrights and indicate this in our system when uploading.

Titles
All information entered in the title fields ("FrontTitles" and
"EndTitles" and "AdditionalTitles") of the k9data was
copied to the “other titles” field of the new platform to make sure no
information is lost. We could only migrate a subset of the old title
information to the new title format due to the fact that titles were
entered in arbitrary formats which made automatic conversions
impossible in some cases. You can, of course, manually match the
old title information of your dog to the titles of the new title list and
the titles will again be displayed with the name of the dog on his
detail page and in the pedigrees.

Health
A large part of the health information, health test results could be
migrated to the new schema, but not all. In case of a migration, please
find the original health information in the particular health notes
field where you can check if it was migrated correctly.

CauseOfDeath
We have migrated some of the more common causes of death. However, as
there were so many different entries and spellings in the k9data field,
without any standardisation, this is certainly not complete and will
have to be completed manually by the user community.

Colour
Field "ColorDesc" had nearly 2,000 different entries, so we have
mapped entries that occurred more than once to the entries based
on AKC, KC and FCI definitions (buff, orange, red, red gold without or
with white markings).

Additional notes:
Fields "Registry" and "RegistrationNumber" have been combined into
the Breed Archive registration number field.
Fields "CHIC", "Honorifics", "Image", "Microchip", "Misc" and "Website"
have all been put into the dog's notes field. If there was at least one OFA test,
we have added a link in the notes field consisting of the OFA-quicksearch and
the registration number of the respective dog.

The Breed Archive has become an important source of information for breeders worldwide.

The idea of supporting breeders even better with a breeding tool to help them find suitable stud dogs was already in our minds a few years ago - the restrictions on dog events due to Corona have increased the need.

Today, we are proud to finally present you this tool, our Mate Matcher. Find out more about it in our newest blog post:

The Breed Archive's new Mate Matcher tool supports breeders in finding suitable dogs for their breeding programmes.

Celebrate our sixth birthday with us today and win one of three 12-month subscriptions!

This year we would like to know from you which breeds, already hosted on the Breed Archive (https://breedarchive.com/home/index ) , are known as fictional characters from books, animation films, movies, or TV.
To participate please leave a comment under this post naming the breed together with the fictional character and book/comic/film in which it appears and that has not been mentioned in comments posted before. (We found at least six breeds starring in different fictional roles.)

Deadline to participate is 28 February 2022, 11 p.m. CET. Three randomly drawn winners will be announced on this page. If winners do not respond within two weeks after the posting of the winner’s notification, they lose any entitlement to receive a subscription. If winners are already subscribers, their subscription will be extended for another 12 months. All decisions are final and cash payouts are excluded.

After some of the food sins of the Christmas holidays, it's time to start eating healthier again. One of the most important ways to make sure that your dog is as healthy as can be is to provide it with a balanced and high quality diet. Get some tips and hints with this task in our newest blog post:
https://breedarchive.com/blog/view/16/your-dogs-diet

Wouldn't it be nice if we could control our own diet the way we control that of our pawsome friends?

A good diet is not only important for us humans, but also for our pets to enable them to live a long healthy life.

To all our users, a very merry Christmas and best wishes for good breeding in 2022!
