We were hit hard by hurricane beryl. Everything around us is devastated. Many cars and houses crushed by trees. No power for miles. No internet or cell signal unless we drive miles away (like now). We will be out of commission for a bit here. It feels like the apocalypse in Texas. We will get orders filled as soon as possible.

Did you know that our research and development goes beyond just frogs? I get some questions about "why do you sell this or why do you no longer sell that?" and the answer is that everything relates back to the profitability of Houston Frogs in order to fund our rather high R&D costs. Equipment and experimentation is very costly and a few projects are now coming to fruition after a very long time and a lot of expenditure. Some products just don't turn out to be profitable either due to low demand or high resource costs and have to be cut, while others turn out more popular than expected and are therefore focused upon. Without shifts in our business and the ability to adapt to our ever changing economy, our research would stagnate.

For one case, I have been working to grow Cordyceps Militaris on a large scale (250lbs this year as a start), focusing on maximization of the miraculous compound Cordycepin (3-deoxyadenosine), which has been proven to kill cancer cells effectively and to prevent their growth and replication. New drugs such as NUC-7738 developed from cordycepin bring us much closer to eradicating this horrendous disease. Through genetic selection of high production strains, nutrient selection, and careful temperature control (65-68F), cordycepin production can be maximized to increase their pharmaceutical value. After seeing many friends and even my dog (now fighting a MCT) suffer from cancer, this has become something I feel I need to devote a portion of my time and energy towards at the moment.

Hopefully this gives you a bit of a behind the scenes look at what goes on here when things seem quiet online. And no worries, there are plenty of frog related products in the works and maybe I will bring some products back when the time is right.

Thank you for supporting us along the way,
Chase Jennings

With rolling blackouts predicted for Texas this coming week with the impending freezing weather, this is a reminder to protect your frogs! Temperatures of just 65F and below can be fatal for tropical frogs!

In case the power goes out, make sure to insulate your tanks with anything that can act as a radiant barrier including Mylar film, blankets, foam panels, etc.

There are many low tech methods to keep your tank warm including the use of warm water bottles placed in the tank, heat packs placed on the sides of your tank, or even creating a makeshift tent around your tank and using a sterno can and ceramic pot as a heat source to warm up the space.

If all else fails, move your frogs into deli containers and put them inside your coat!

Have a plan in place just in case.

Frogger’s tip of the day: Many items in the hobby actually come from other industries and have a variety of substitutes.

Fruit fly lids and cups: did you know that most polypropylene containers from restaurant supply stores (will not melt with boiling water) can be used for fruit fly culturing? Instead of buying expensive lids, try 2-3 layers of panty hose paired with a rubber band. Tyvek material or mask making fabric/filter fabric can also be used. You can use the original lids to secure the fabric as well and cut holes in them depending on the amount of ventilation needed. Here are some experimental containers I made in the video.

Don’t have excelsior, which has been used for decades for packing wine and other fragile items then repurposed for fruit flies? Use paper plates or cardboard instead!

Don’t have Indian almond leaves? You can substitute alder cones, cholla wood, or even oak leaves—the tannins are what you need and are contained in many botanicals. The concentration of these tannins is how black water is made.

Want a grow-out bin base layer that doesn’t rot and cause bacterial/CO2 issues like Sphagnum moss does? Get some turface allsport from a nearby store and overlay it with some leaf litter. It absorbs and releases moisture similarly to Sphagnum but without the rot!

Stay tuned and follow for more tips.

All orders shipped today through the end of August will be receiving a special gift! On top of our standard candy pack (type varies), you’ll receive a random color of resin dart frog packed in a separate 1oz container. All orders, no matter how large or small, will get one of these guys as a gift instead of our typical, significantly smaller nano frogs or isopods. Www.houstonfrogs.com

These resin frogs are not just for decor, they represent the size and weight (visual) of a 2-2.5 month old Dendrobates Leucomelas/Auratus/Tinctorius dart frog. If it’s not bigger than this, it’s probably not 3 months of age. It’s a decent measuring tool 🙂

Frog Keeper’s Tip of the Day:
How to reduce mite issues in fruit fly culturing:
Mites cling to fruit flies and whether you see them or not, every culture has them! You can only reduce mite issues! A few mites will not crash cultures but a lot can—and they’ll make your face itch!

1. Dispose of cultures at the one-month mark religiously (30 days from the day they are made)
2. Seed new cultures Only with your newest producing cultures—Never use old cultures in seeding if you can help it!
3. Clean shelves weekly. Isopropyl Alcohol is a good start but will not kill most mites (to your horror). We use benzyl benzoate in a 10% solution to Actually kill them! Make sure to wear gloves
4. Use boiling water when making cultures as it will kill pre-existing mites, their eggs, and a significant amount of bacteria and mold spores in your media (pasteurization), to give you a blank slate to begin with.
5. Never store new cultures near old cultures! Separate them by date so any old cultures that may boom with mites will not infest new cultures.
6. Put cultures on diatomaceous earth or mite-paper. You can make your own mite paper by spraying Kraft paper with permethrin
7. Do not store culturing materials near your active cultures (or anything else you care about getting mites). Do not touch new cultures after touching 3-4 week old cultures if you can help it. This is simply preventing cross contamination
8. Don’t freak out! You sleep in dust mites, you have mites on your eyelashes, you are surrounded by mites everywhere! It’s a game of reduction to prevent overwhelming numbers, but you’ll never eliminate them completely.

If you have more more reduction tips, feel free to post them here!

Frog Keeper’s Tip of the day:
Your sanity and your significant other will thank you for getting a katchy and for setting out some simple vinegar traps to catch escaped fruit flies.

Apple cider vinegar + 2 drops of dish soap (or 2 drops of tween 20 for the scientists among us) to reduce surface tension

Also keep a shop vac handy near your cultures in case you drop a fruit fly cup
shhh đŸ€« no one needs to know it ever happened

After ordering over $1000 in air filters, our laboratory is almost ready for action again. After changing out filters, we still have to complete a bleach wipe down, UVC treatment, and full ozone treatment to completely sterilize the room. 100+ cultures of fungi and bacteria will need to be restarted to be fully back in operation. At this point we are 2 weeks behind schedule, but will have our fungal and tissue cultured products available as soon as possible. Thank you everyone for your patience.

We just returned from our business trip to Japan to visit one of our business partners (definitely the highlight of the trip), to see the Dart Frog husbandry at their aquariums, and to bring back inventory.

The dart frog tanks were well designed, the tanks were not crowded with frogs and none had mixed localities. The information posted on dart frogs was very insightful as well. The tanks could have perhaps had some more leaf litter, but otherwise they were clean and had the proper amount of space for the frogs. The frogs were in excellent health and no stress was observed.

Stay tuned as we will be relaunching the website and resuming operations in a week. Our website will include a lot of amazing Japanese frog goods on relaunch so stay tuned!

Hello!
First off, Sharon and I greatly appreciate you guys and your continued support! We have had an overwhelming amount of orders this year and while this has been great from a business perspective, we have decided to shut down shipping for the month of June to allow us to catch up on many things we have been far too busy to do with the constant stream of orders.

Laboratory: The lab has needed maintenance for a few months now--changing the 17 different filters, scrubbing everything down, ozone gas treating the entire room, and throwing out/restarting old cultures. We are additionally switching to a new method of culturing mycelium, which will speed up mushroom kit order fulfillment 3x

3D Printing: 9 of our current 19 printers are down and need severe maintenance (new LCD screens/new FEP film/Recalibration--4 need new motherboards). We will be repairing/servicing the printers and adding a few more, increasing fulfilment speed 2-3x

Plants: Many plants need to be IDed so they can be listed online and sold.

Website Maintenance: Many items need to be updated and many need to be added. This is in addition to a complete overhaul of the website itself.

R&D: Several ground breaking new products have been on the backburner for a long time and need to be finished but will require the above laboratory maintenance to complete.

Switching from Made-to-Order to In-Stock Only: This will mean fewer options on the website for each item, but drastically faster fulfillment times.

In a nutshell, you may still order between June 1- July 1, but orders will not be shipping again until July 1 to allow us desperately needed time to make these improvements to the business and to catch up on delayed orders. Orders placed before June 1 (today and tomorrow) will be shipped out by June 6.

Thank you for your understanding and I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. As you may know, I typically work 110-120 hours per week, but still cannot catch up without this much needed break from order fullfillment. I will look forward to filling your orders again in July and will be doing a special 4th of July sale as a thank you for your continued patronage.
-Chase & Sharon
