I made the choice not to pursue the suspects trail into the cornfield due to officer safety to include Ravi. I know some on-scene wanted nothing more than to continue to track and find the suspect but I wasn’t willing to risk safety due to the possibility of the suspect being armed. The suspect was caught a few days later, unarmed and no one was injured.
I always tried to slow things down a bit and evaluate them for everyone’s safety. I feel this is often overlooked in the working dog community and it leads to K-9’s being injured or killed for nothing more than an apprehension.
Team Ravi just walked in the door. We were requested by a neighboring agency this evening to assist with tracking an individual who fled in a stolen car then on foot. Ravi located and followed the suspect’s path for about 3/4 of a mile where it entered a corn field. Due to concerns the suspect could have been armed with a machete, lack of personnel, the density of the corn and lack of visibility due to fog a decision was made not to pursue the track any further. This was a decision made for the safety of law enforcement, the suspect and for K9 Ravi.
Team Ravi is relaxing and unwinding before we crawl into bed, we hope everyone has a great week!
