Thought this was an amazing piece of history…appropriate for the remembrance of D-Day and being K-9 Related!

Today, we remember the brave soldiers and remarkable animals who served on D-Day, 6th June 1944. Among them was a 2-year-old Alsatian-Collie cross named Brian, later known as Bing.

Due to wartime rationing, Bing’s owner, Betty Fetch, had to give him up. In January 1944, Bing was selected from the Army War Dog Training School in Hertfordshire and given the service number 2720/6871.

On D-Day, Bing parachuted into Normandy with his handler, Lance Corporal Ken Bailey, as part of the 13th Parachute Battalion, 6th Airborne Division. According to reports, a hesitant Bing was coaxed out of the airplane with a piece of meat. And Bing's landing wasn't smooth—he ended up in a tree and had to be rescued. Despite being wounded, Bing continued his service, locating the enemy and protecting troops until September 1944. Bing was among a number of animals awarded for his bravery, receiving the Dickin Medal.

After the war, Bing was returned to the Fetch family. On his death in 1955 his skin and fur were mounted for display while the rest of his remains were buried in the PDSA Animal Cemetery in Ilford in Essex.
