If someone tries to sell or even gift you a puppy under the age of 8 weeks, just say no!
Don’t be party to that puppy’s rough start in life because you wanted them sooner, or because mom was “over it and won’t let them nurse anyway.” Maybe they are telling you that there isn’t any good reason to hold them any longer now that they can eat puppy food. Or they will take them to the pound if you don’t buy them right now.
Don’t fall prey to opportunists who do not put the puppy’s needs and well-being first.
Puppies don’t just need their mother for sustenance. They need her AND their littermates for early training lessons. Things like “oh, teeth hurt” (bite inhibition) and how to say “no” and to recognize and respect that communication from others (social cues). Your puppy is cute, but cute can only get them so far in life.
So please, please take the time to find an ethical source for your next puppy, whether that is a breeder, rescue, or shelter. You won’t regret it.

This weather is off the chain, and not in a great way! Going from -38° to 42° isn’t good. It’s stressful on the animals. The freezing rain is causing some fun challenges outside, and the snowpack is going to be funky through the rest of winter just because of this super eccentric weather pattern.
Looks like next week will see us back@in the 20’s, which is my absolute preference! If we can hold below freezing, but above 10° for the rest of winter… or at least until February (when we usually have our coldest temps), that would be greeeeeeeat!

Kunekune Piglets
Kunekune piglets are the cutest little things! The perfect homestead animals, Kunekunes are great with children and other stock animals.
Just another day in paradise.
Bringing up the rear…
Sevy and Ahsoka follow the puppies.
Tanner and his pups
Tanner is a wonderful and tolerant father of his rambunctious, almost 5-week-old puppies!
Part of pack life means these puppies are growing up around their mom and dad, but also other working dogs, as well! Wade, Selene and Ahsoka are all contributing cuddles and security for the puppies. The tradition of a mixed age family/pack has worked for generations and helps build confidence and the teamwork ethic we look for in our pups in a few weeks!
How does a chicken take a bath?
With dirt! Seems kind of weird, bathing in dirt. But that’s how they maintain their dashing good looks! Dust baths and preening.
We have Icelandic chicken hatching eggs available now! Contact us for details 🐣

Summer Pasture
We moved the cattle, goats and sheep up to the bigger summer pen to eat all this nice green down for fire prevention. They got right to it!
Pack Play
Wade getting teamed up on by the senior ladies Infi and Selene (his mom). And Jim really wanted to help but couldn’t figure out how 😅
This is just play, no one was hurt (other than Wade’s pride).
“But how do you train them?”
I tell the dogs what I want from them in simple English. They understand full sentences and phrases, not just single words!
Here’s Wade to demonstrate. Give it a try with your dogs! Let me know how it goes 😀

Our Story
At Northwest Guardians, the goal is to educate the public on what a livestock guardian dog is, how they benefit the ecosystem, and how they save the lives of their wards. This incredibly valuable subtype of working dog is becoming more and more popular in the United States, and education must follow to allow these dogs to be utilized to their full potential. Our website features profiles of each of our working LGDs, educational topics regarding LGDs, and litter announcements.
Our breeding program is purpose based. We offer both Purebred Sarplaninac pups and Cross-bred pups of only Livestock Guardian Dog breeds.
We believe in what these dogs can offer other families on small (less than 100 acres) holdings as traditional livestock protection, territorial guarding qualities in less secure locations, and even as a first alert system to predators approaching our children playing in the yard - Our LGDs support our woodsy Montana lifestyle without imposing on our every waking minute.
We love the independent, intelligent nature of these dogs, and seek to share the joy of a healthy, well-bred and started pup with our clients.
Our policy is that there is no “pick of the litter” because no home needs the same exact pup. There is an ideal home for every pup, and it is our purpose to find that home and place the pup appropriately to set them and their new owner up for success in all things.
We support our puppies and their families for LIFE.
We do not upcharge for color, s*x, or other unique physical features a puppy may possess. These are not relevant to the working purpose of these puppies, and we are not here to nickel and dime you.
We perform health screening on ALL breeding dogs in our kennel.
We look forward to working with you if our policies resonate with you!
