Keeping koi in a larger pond is definitely better for their health, but it makes it harder to set aside specific koi for folks. When it comes to young koi, they have a lot of dangers to face from their carp brethren too. So it’s time to build a lagoon to give some shelter to smaller fish and fry and keeping the larger fish in one place as needed.
The build is pretty simple and cheap, using milk crates to allow the small fish to swim through. I zip tied the crates together to create the base. Using flag stone to weigh it all down and create the look, I boasted it above water with smaller milk crates zipped together. I stuffed any gaps with filter material.
Overall, I’m happy with the results! Now to keep an eye on these crafty carps to make sure they don’t find an opening!
