Phheeeew!
A busy day today!
13 gorgeous birds, a mix of babies and adults, went off via High Flyers today!

A pair of beautiful hagoromos are on their way up to Aberdeenshire! A journey of over 560 miles!

All birds are sent off with their comfort and safety as number 1 priority.
They have access to seed, water, oat groats, and millet ❤️

Safe journey, little ones, and I look forward to seeing you all happy and settled in your new homes 🥰

Don't forget that your dream baby is only a message away. Even when you can't collect in person, you're still able to have that new special little companion in your life 😍

You know the world has a funny sense of humour, and it's one of those laugh or cry moments that make life just so frustratingly wonderful! 🌏

For the last few years, I've been digiliantly working on the cinnamon blackwing project after finding out that I had cinnamon in my lines. At the time, I wasn't particularly happy about it because blackwings should be black, but hey, when life gives you lemons! 🍋🍋🍋

So, with careful processes and selective breeding, i tried really hard to harness and extract the cinnamon, bring it forward, and create blackwing cinnamons.

Blackwing is a recessive gene, and cinnamon is s*x linked, so breeding it carefully without inbreeding means that visual male blackwing cinnamons would be quite hard to get, but I was up for the challenge! 💪

Last year I managed to breed one, but sadly he was rejected quite early on in the nest, despite fully handrearing him, he was never a strong bird and fell ill a few months into his life. Sadly, he passed away, leaving me without a male to continue the project.

I had a few visual female blackwing cinnamons, so I started to diversify the bloodlines even more, but despite my best efforts, I just couldn't get another blackwing cinnamon male. 😪

Then I got sick and had to start finding homes for my birds and decided that the blackwing cinnamons would be better in someone else's hands to continue the work.

The one pair I had breeding wasn't hugely successful and was rearing off some foster babies before they then went to their new homes. However, while they were still in the breeding cage, they laid 2 eggs, which I fostered into other nests, not expecting them to be fertilised...

You can see where this is going, right?...

Yeah, well. Let me introduce you to this little chap, the last blackwing baby boy to be bred at GWA. Not only is he a visual blackwing, but after all these years of trying to forward this project and get that lucky prize... he's also a cinnamon...

A cinnamon blackwing baby boy budgie, everyone 😂😂🤣🤣😆😆😭

A question i get asked quite often is;

Can Japanese crested hagoromos fly?

The answer is YES! They absolutely can! 💯

The flowers on the top of their wings are just cosmetic and do not interfere with flight at all. 🕊

There are also rumours that their lifespan is relatively shorter than non hagoromo budgies. Now, there was some truth to this and still can be, depending on how they are bred.

Due to them being a rare mutation, some breeders will not keep records on their bloodlines or prioritise diversifying the bloodline with new birds from unrelated sources. This means that inbreeding occurs and will shorten the lifespan of the offspring.

This can be said for any mutation, not just the hagoromos, and heavily relies on the breeder to have good breeding ethics and control of their bloodlines. 🩸

Lots of my time and money is spent in the search for unrelated bloodlines and making sure that my offspring are well bred and strong.

I have records dating back to 2014, where all my pairs and bloodlines are noted for my reference. Not only does this ensure the quality of my babies, but in my opinion, the morally correct thing to do.

Not much is known how the hagoromo mutation behaves. However, in my experience, breeding a non hagoromo to a visual hagoromo produces many different results. Similar to the crested variety, variations of traits can be passed down to the offspring.👶

Some babies may have a tuft instead of a crest, some may have a frillback with no flowers, and other babies may have no visual signs at all.

Even when pairing a visual hagromo to a visual hagoromo, the results and quality may vary.
I have bred babies with no crest but have flowers, no flowers at all but has a crest and others with only one flower on one wing.💐

This can mean that for some breeders, the unreliability of the mutation puts them off keeping them as they desire to have quality and consistency across the board in their nests.

For me, though, the unreliability offers a challenge! When I get a baby with a perfect crest and two perfect flowers, I take it as a well-earned accomplishment!

I totally understand that the japanese created hagoromo isn't for everyone, but through education and awareness, I have managed to encourage those that weren't originally that keen, to now keeping this wonderful type themselves! 😀

I know I bleat on about them, and I probably bore you all to tears as you've all heard it 100 times before. But I am genuinely so passionate about this wonderful mutation and am getting amazing feedback from new hagoromo owners! 🚁

So now a question for you?
Love them? Or hate them? ❤️👎

Please feel free to post pictures of your gorgeous hagoromos below 🥰🥰🥰

Hia guys! ❤️

I've had quite a few messages asking when the next lot of birds will be available or requests for pictures of certain birds and mutations.

This time is incredibly difficult for me, not only due to my health but the emotional impact it is having on making a choice on what birds will stay or leave me.

These are birds that I've spent years looking after, seeing them hatch and grow and creating bonds with them.

I ask for your patience and understanding as my workload, despite being poorly, has increased due to having to sort, catch, document, photograph, and advertise each bird. As well as my other responsibilities, such as the birdroom in general, my children, my other animals, and my home and family.

So far, I've allocated 2 different lots of birds that have all found new homes, and I'm so incredibly grateful for the continuous support in this transition period.

I have had a few emergency rehomes come in, and these will be advertised as soon as I have the time to spare. They are currently going through quarantine procedures.

The next lot of birds planned to be advertised besides the rehomes will be those pairs that are currently breeding that i will not be keeping. However, as they are all at different stages, I can not give time frames when they will be ready, as it depends on when their babies have weaned, something I'm not going to rush. Potentially, we could be looking at 3 months' time for these breeding pairs.

I will post an update on here when I have another lot of birds available and then will upload to BAND straight after. Notifications from BAND will be sent to your phones as soon as they're uploaded.

Moving forward, I will be keeping my Japanese crested hagoromos and my German fallow rainbows. As both projects are dear to my heart, I will be moving forward with only these 2 projects.

The German fallow rainbows are not hagoromo and so to cater for anyone that wishes to have a baby and stay on my waiting list, these will be paired to my hagoromos to produce offspring that do not have any signs of being hagromo.
Essentially, they will just carry the bloodline of both German fallow and hagoromos.

Thank you again for all your support and kindness ❤️❤️❤️

We've been sent in this amazing picture from Jim🥰
This is Ivy with her new Mummy stepping up onto hands for millet in just 3 days!!
How amazing is that! ❤️
The gorgeous Ivy was personally delivered by me, so she didn't have much in the way of journey time as Jim is fairly local.
She's settled in very quickly as I was personally watching her do her best acrobatics while we were doing the paperwork 😆

Does anyone else have a playful girly?

Thank you so much, Jim, for sharing the picture, and I'm looking forward to seeing more adventures in the future 😀

Hia guys! Something a little different with today's post!

Here is a picture of a healthy growing embryos Vs an embryo that sadly hasn't made it. This is often referred to as DIS. Which stands for D*ead In Shell.

Dis eggs can be seen at any embryo stage from early on into incubation, right through to the chick simply failing to hatch.

An early DIS egg can be noticed with what's also called, the red ring of d*eath. As shown here in the picture, you can see that the blood vessels have broken down and formed a thick red line around the yolk inside of the egg. As this was caught quite early, you can also see a second ring in the middle, which would have been blood vessels supporting the growing embryo.

After a few short hours the blood vessels will break down further, making that outer ring thicker and more prominent.

You can see in the second picture that sadly, the embryo is no longer visible in the centre of the egg as compared to the top picture.

Babies can die in the egg for a number of reasons, including bacterial infection, genetic abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental factors.

It's always important to follow good hygiene and husbandry practices when breeding birds, making sure your bloodlines are diverse, keeping up with those all important supplements and of course, keeping the enjoyment as stress free as possible.

It's always a sad occasion when an egg or baby is lost, but sadly, even when you do everything right, there's some that just don't make it 💔

Hia guys!
An early update from me today!

Tonight at 8pm there is a live Q&A involving Dee Porter (UKBC Chairwoman), Steph Giles (UKBC Vice chairwoman) and myself (UKBC Secretary) ❤️

You can ask us any budgie related questions and spend your evening with us and a nice cuppa having a little chinwag for an hour!

The live is for UKBC members only and the link to join in the fun is found under the 'Featured' tab on the UKBC Pets page 🥰

It's been quite a long time since I've hosted a live and I'm really excited to being able to see you all again, especially with my health being so terrible lately.

So please pop along and support the ladies behind the scenes of our wonderful club! 😁

I'll be seeing you at 8pm this evening ❤️❤️❤️

Something a little surprising from Percy and Lilo! ❤️
Percy is a green split blue split recessive pied and Lilo is a yellow faced recessive pied violet greywing!
Percy was rehomed to me a few years ago and I bought Lilo last year, so zero chance of them being related, however they've produced not just greywing babies, but recessive pied too! 🤯

And what a surprise, out of the whole clutch we had 4 offspring, 3 visual recessive pieds and 1 split.

The visual recessive pieds are all girls 😆😆😆

The recessive gene must breed out hen heavy so it's super interesting to see it happen with a third pair. Rascal and Dream, Toby and Rya and now Percy and Lilo have all had hen heavy clutches!

If you've bred recessive pied, how has your ratios been?

Maybe it's just because we're in winter and the weather has an affect on gender 🤔

They're super cute though!

One baby not included in the pictures as she's not fledged yet but she has normal recessive markings ❤️

We have had an abundance of gorgeous hago girlie's! So apologies for those of you waiting on a boy, they will hopefully be along soon!
Weirdly, I find that in the colder months, we produce more girls across the board, regardless of mutation. 🥶
Then in the warmer months, we start having the appearance of more boys! 🌞

In the wild, the girls will breed as soon as they're mature and this could be as early as 5 or 6 months! So with more girls born in winter, it means that they will be of age come summer!

Of course, we don't recommend breeding that early, as the risks are very high of eggbinding and prolapse due to the female not being fully developed, but it is an interesting theory 🤔

That does mean that we have lots of girl hagoromos that are looking for new perches! And there's me begging the universe in spring for girls, now that's all we're getting 😆 shot myself in the foot with that one 😅😅😅

There are more girlie's to come in other colours 😍

Drop me a message if there's any interest on the ladies ❤️

A late one for me tonight! 😴

High Flyers courier will be arriving tomorrow to collect 3 special orders 🥰

What's amazing is that we have 1 going to Scotland, one to Wales, and the other is right bang in the middle of the UK, between the 2!

Don't forget that High Flyers courier service is available to deliver your new companions for a very fair price, so it may be something to consider if you want a GWA baby but can not collect in person ❤️

All carriers are kitted out with substrate, seed, millet, and water to keep them as comfortable as possible on their journey 🚗

Our take-home packs can also be fixed to the carrier or crate, which contains handy information, a hatch certificate, and any photo keepsakes 📸

Let High Flyers take the stress and worry away from getting yourself a new companion! Aaaaand I book them for you! This makes the process for you, as stressful free as possible! 🤩

For the next 3 months, I have a variety of different mutations breeding, including hagoromos (helicopter budgies), recessive pieds, German fallows, rainbows, clearwings and texas clearbodies!

So don't delay! Once their time is finished in the breeding cage, we will only be moving forward with hagoromos, so get on the waiting list today! 😁

An amazing collection today! 11 birds off to their new home with Robberta, a mix of babies and adults ❤️
This beautiful group will be a big part of her breeding journey, and I can't wait to see updates from her future nests.
Robberta also loves to have a standard take-home pack with every baby so she can keep her files up to date and keep an eye on her lines.
This helps to avoid inbreeding and those bloodlines fresh 🥰

Thanks again for your continued support 😉
