The fabulous Deb from Kingston Dressmaking keeping my head cosy on a freezing morning! Super cosy!!!
Post puppy class shenanigans.
FOMO is a really useful tool for improving recall!
Watching a funny pet video with Molly. 🤣
Well hello little Pipsqueak!!! You may remember earlier this year little Claire lost her battle with feline Aids. Smudge now has a new little sister! She is adorable!!!
Puppy school with Luna, Harvey, Mitsie, Maisie, Jack and Frankie. Great manners training for social interaction. Watch Jack the border do the nip to the rear of Frankie the cocker (very breed specific behaviour for working sheep) and Frankie let's him know he didn't appreciate this. Frankie gets resilience skills and Jack gets a lesson in appropriate play. Luna and Harvey have their own more passive game happening and Maisie and Mitsie are learning that they can seek shelter from the mayhem anytime they like and mum and dad will always be their advocate.
Displacement behaviour. If a dog is experiencing big emotions they can display displacement behaviours. Koda likes to scratch her ears and neck. Other dogs hump. It describes a behaviour that doesn't match the situation. It is always important to rule out medical issues like an ear infection or skin irritation which Koda doesn't have. Mind you, this kooky k9 likes to face plant in puddles so is a top candidate for ear infections!!! Funny girl.
Davey loves his toys. Davey also knows which toys are his and he may have tipped the whole basket over to show them all to me but he only grabs his toys. Not the cushions or things that aren't his. Using good quality toys that last, allow your dogs to have a sense of ownership. If they constantly destroy toys and get them replaced, they aren't learning what's ok to put in their mouth and what's not ok. This is how you combat destructive behaviour. Give them good toys and limit the number available. You can rotate them too. Good boy Davey!!!
This is how we want recall to be. Fast and enthusiastic. How do we get here? Perfect practice!!! All those months on the lead gives us 100% strike rate. Now we put the automatic response to the test off lead.
Helena and Dick! So smoochy!
Meet Davey. Our first meeting today and although he won't win any prizes as a guard dog he is sure to win super cutest squishy face!!!
Getting some kitty love. Poor C4 has had 3 tablets AND a shot tonight but took it like a champ!!
Something different for Chudleigh and Daisy. Routine is great to a point but dogs can develop anxiety if you deviate from that routine too dramatically so controlling changes and working within their emotional capabilities leads to success. Also why it's important to respect on leash/off leash areas. Confidence is destroyed if approached by a random dog whilst on leash. Your dog might be friendly but people walk their dogs in on leash areas for a reason.
Did you know that a good sniffari will satisfy your dog and tire them out better than physical exertion?
A marker is a sound that represents acknowledgement of a correct or desired behaviour. You have under 2 seconds for the dog to make the association between the behaviour with the reward. A marker is a precursor for the reinforcement (treats!).
Exploring new spaces was a big thrill for Mags however crossing the troll bridge was not something she was keen on repeating!!! Watch how she displays all the body language cues in this clip! Learning how your dog communicates is the key to a successful relationship based on trust rather than frustration.
Using the presence of another dog as an opportunity to practice being relaxed and listen to what I ask. The distance is well within her threshold and I try to reduce it to challenge her but am at the whim of a stranger with a fence in the way! All good learning still.
