Post puppy class shenanigans.

Yesterday this beautiful boy Charlie lost his battle with his many health problems. The dedication of his family over the years and his sweet disposition meant that this little dog endured so much illness with stoicism and good nature and surrounded by love right till the end. Everyone who met Charlie fell in love with him. Doggie Heaven has a new Angel. Sending hugs to his family.

Watching a funny pet video with Molly. 🤣

Well hello little Pipsqueak!!! You may remember earlier this year little Claire lost her battle with feline Aids. Smudge now has a new little sister! She is adorable!!!

Puppy school with Luna, Harvey, Mitsie, Maisie, Jack and Frankie. Great manners training for social interaction. Watch Jack the border do the nip to the rear of Frankie the cocker (very breed specific behaviour for working sheep) and Frankie let's him know he didn't appreciate this. Frankie gets resilience skills and Jack gets a lesson in appropriate play. Luna and Harvey have their own more passive game happening and Maisie and Mitsie are learning that they can seek shelter from the mayhem anytime they like and mum and dad will always be their advocate.

Displacement behaviour. If a dog is experiencing big emotions they can display displacement behaviours. Koda likes to scratch her ears and neck. Other dogs hump. It describes a behaviour that doesn't match the situation. It is always important to rule out medical issues like an ear infection or skin irritation which Koda doesn't have. Mind you, this kooky k9 likes to face plant in puddles so is a top candidate for ear infections!!! Funny girl.

Davey loves his toys. Davey also knows which toys are his and he may have tipped the whole basket over to show them all to me but he only grabs his toys. Not the cushions or things that aren't his. Using good quality toys that last, allow your dogs to have a sense of ownership. If they constantly destroy toys and get them replaced, they aren't learning what's ok to put in their mouth and what's not ok. This is how you combat destructive behaviour. Give them good toys and limit the number available. You can rotate them too. Good boy Davey!!!

This is how we want recall to be. Fast and enthusiastic. How do we get here? Perfect practice!!! All those months on the lead gives us 100% strike rate. Now we put the automatic response to the test off lead.

Sad news today that this sweet old boy crossed the rainbow bridge at age 19. I know his family gave him everything and he had such a blessed life. Sending them hugs and rest well dear Budda.

Helena and Dick! So smoochy!

Meet Davey. Our first meeting today and although he won't win any prizes as a guard dog he is sure to win super cutest squishy face!!!

Getting some kitty love. Poor C4 has had 3 tablets AND a shot tonight but took it like a champ!!

Something different for Chudleigh and Daisy. Routine is great to a point but dogs can develop anxiety if you deviate from that routine too dramatically so controlling changes and working within their emotional capabilities leads to success. Also why it's important to respect on leash/off leash areas. Confidence is destroyed if approached by a random dog whilst on leash. Your dog might be friendly but people walk their dogs in on leash areas for a reason.

Did you know that a good sniffari will satisfy your dog and tire them out better than physical exertion?

Exploring new spaces was a big thrill for Mags however crossing the troll bridge was not something she was keen on repeating!!! Watch how she displays all the body language cues in this clip! Learning how your dog communicates is the key to a successful relationship based on trust rather than frustration.

Using the presence of another dog as an opportunity to practice being relaxed and listen to what I ask. The distance is well within her threshold and I try to reduce it to challenge her but am at the whim of a stranger with a fence in the way! All good learning still.

How good's this recall! Well excluding Archie who was on his own mission but you can see I don't say 'come' to him as I know it's going to fall on deaf ears when he is determined to nick off like that. Repeating the command with no chance of success will only dilute the relevance of the command. You need to be able to action the response which is what the 8 or so months on lead for Maggie achieved. A more automated response if possibly a little too enthusiastic!!! Check out the screenshot of the end of the video in stories. Gave me a laugh!

When you give your dog toys, be careful to check how they play with them. These mini tennis balls fall apart very easily and can end up causing huge problems if ingested. Best place to store these is in the bin!!!

27/04/2024

Dogs learn using compound cues. They take all the pieces of a puzzle to come to a conclusion. Verbal cues are less valuable than body language and movement. Breed variance can come into play here but thinking about sight hounds (such as Maggie) it makes sense to add a moving signal to a verbal cue to really hit home what I'm asking.

Return to heel. This is a great progression from a complete turn with your dog. Saves you from getting dizzy!

One on one with Maggie. She is an enthusiastic lass when we head out so time to work on engagement with me before engaging with every rock, bug and blade of grass! She does get free time too which is important!

Trevor is doing very well at his leash work! Only 6 months old! Not a fan of the brush though!
