It was with profound sadness that we heard of the passing of ‘The Duchess’ Millie Cartwright last weekend , Millie passed away in front of the fire in her home, peacefully after a very short illness , we are all devastated.
Millie was one of my original dog walking dogs from my morningside dog walking days , she was everything you would want a dog to be and more ! I loved Millie like one of my own . We will miss her terribly here at Dogtastic and will continue to love and cherish her partner in crime Rosie. Our love and thoughts are with Millie’s family who gave her the best life , thankyou Millie for all the fabulous memories and redeeming my faith in black labs !

Yesterday we had to say goodbye to our golden girl Elsa as she leaves us to have fun filled adventures with her humans - everyone at Dogtastic wishes you all the very best! 💕 This ended up becoming a very cake filled event as one of our Golden Retriever girls Belle celebrated her birthday recently, and her owners kindly sent her along with treats for her doggy friends and doughnuts for us humans! YUM! 🍩 We also recently celebrated little Hector and Zoe’s birthdays with MORE CAKE and our pack walkies! Phewww - we are all caked out!! 🎂😂

A new month means it’s time to explore another amazing breed and May brings us the Boxer. Boxers are very popular in family homes as they are loving and affectionate with beautiful glossy coats and gorgeous expression which also draws them a lot of positive attention. They are highly intelligent adding to the appeal of a family pet as they pick up training quickly. Boxers were originally bred for hunting animals such as bears, boars and deer. They originated in Germany descending from Bullenbeisser. There is suspicion that boxers at some point were cross bred with Bulldogs contributing to the current day look. Boxers have also been highly valued as guard dogs, tracking dogs and even found themselves in the armed forces working as messengers and pack carriers.

April brings us the gorgeous and loving Boston Terriers as breed of the month. As with most breeds their name is derived from the location of discovery. They were first founded in New England, Boston USA in the 1890s and rapidly grew in popularity. By the 1950s the Boston Terrier was the most popular dog breed in America. This is completely understandable as these little cuties are the smallest of the Bulldog breed and bring along a very cheeky and fun loving personality. The founding father is said to be a cross bred dog that is 50% Bulldog and 50% White Terrier explaining the gorgeous colour and markings that define the appearance of these gorgeous dogs. The Bulldog supplies the brindle genes and the White Terrier the white markings which are now part of the breed standard for the Bostons. Boston Terriers are part of the Utility Group which consists of a number of different breeds such as Dalmations, Bulldogs, Akitas and Poodles. The Utility Group is for dogs that have been bred for a purpose that doesn't fit the category of sporting or working like collies and grey hounds for example. Boston terriers are cheeky, playful and very affectionate making them a very desirable breed to have as a family pet. How could you resist these little faces?

March has been an exciting and busy month! We have loved hearing that Casper and Henry have been promoted to big brothers as they welcome new additions. Then we got to celebrate with our March babies as Baxter, Rosie and Ruby have their birthdays. We have also had to say goodbye to Murray and Rua as they head away for new adventures- we wish them all the best. We can’t wait to see what April brings! We hope all of our Dogtastic family have a wonderful Easter weekend whatever you get up to! 🌷🩷

March’s breed of the month brings us the Rottweiler. Rottweilers are a large breed that were originally used by the Romans when travelling to herd their livestock. The name Rottweiler comes from a German town called Rottweil where livestock markets were held, leading to cattle dealers and farmers requiring guard dogs. To create a dog for purpose a combination of Mastif type dogs and sheep dogs were used to create athletic and courages temperaments. When travelling back from the markets farmers would tie their bags of money to the collars of their Rottweilers as they have a very protective nature and therefore it was safe from thieves. However, in more recent years the Rottweiler has acquired a bad reputation due to people buying them solely for the purpose of a tough image. However, nowadays these dogs are better recognised for their affectionate, fun loving natures, making them fabulous pets. Working Rottweilers are known as one of the most heroic breeds when used in search and rescue teams, aiding humans in many walks of life. Yet another example of their amazing qualities 💜

Februarys Breed of the Month brings us the Schnauzer. Schnauzers can be Giant, Standard or miniature with a wiry style coat and long haired snouts. Originally known as the Wirehaired Pinscher they soon became known as Schnauzers in 1879 which is German and translates to ‘whiskered snout”. The breed backdates to the 14th century and has been popular ever since. The Giant Schnauzer was once known as the Munich schnauzer as it was in demand for cattle farmers in Munich. To increase the size and strength of the schnauzer to meet farming demands breeds such as: Rottweiler, Great Dane, sheepdogs and Bouviers were introduced into their breeding. Due to their increased size and incredible strength Giant Schnauzers were used in the police and even to help guard grounds. Miniaturisation has been on record since 1888 after using Affenpinscher blood to reduce the size. Originally used as pest control dogs they’ve always been handy to have around filling roles such as herding livestock and towing carts. The Schnauzer is a popular choice for a pet as they are affectionate, adaptable and highly intelligent.

To kick start the new year we have the Norfolk Terrier for our breed of the month. They were officially recognised as their own breed in 1964 after previously falling under the Norwich Terrier who have ears that prick up rather than drop. These little cuties are the smallest of all breeds that fall under the terrier category but do not fall short on confidence. They are brave and strong with a stubborn yet cheeky and charming personality. They are super affectionate and loyal making them a desirable companion 🤍

I’d like to unshamedly promote and say thankyou to our friends at Ivy and Duke
I saw their promo for their Xmas stockings for dogs and having owned several of their dog beds and blankets I knew the quality of these would be fab
I did choke a bit on the cost as we were buying several, however , I know I will only have to buy these once as they will last a lifetime and our dogs are fabulous , they give up their paddocks , playing space , their individual attention and more often than not, their beds to our guest dogs and daycare dogs so they fully deserve a treat and a thankyou , on Xmas day their stockings will be full of treats
I cannot recommend Ivy and Duke enough , their products are way above most , the stockings, beds and much more can be found at Ivyandduke.co.uk

The new play equipment is proving to be a great addition to our centre.

They’re great for jumping on and around, peeking through, pausing at the top to watch others play, and even offering a quiet place to curl up for a snooze! Our dogs LOVE them! 😍🐶
