I am JUST beginning to feel like myself again. Rearing a litter is all consuming. You sleep, you eat, you shower.... yet you are never really THERE. You are with the litter mind, body and soul. It takes a toll. It takes a toll on you physically, mentally and emotionally. Only those of us whom have bred a litter can truly understand the sacrifices necessary to do what we do.
The planning of each litter is months and months in advance. People see the entertaining 8 weeks of cuteness. They do not see the months of preparation. The viewing of numerous stud dogs hoping that this time it will be the right dog, the right husband. That this time the hundreds of miles drive was worth it. Only for it not to be so ....and then we start again.
People do not see the days spent in limbo waiting for your girl to decide today is the day. The last minute dash to the stud dog invariably at the other end of the country. Your girl's progesterone levels have risen uncharacteristically fast and the time is NOW! If you are lucky the pairing you have painstakingly matched will agree with your choice, that the timing is right and that the stars have aligned correctly.
The long 4 weeks wait until the scan. Is she or isnt she? Will you have to make the dreaded phone call to all the desperately hopeful prospective owners to say there are no puppies? Will you have to wait another 6 months before you can try again? The scan is positive - hurray! Euphoria!!!!
The next 5 weeks are spent worrying. Will my girl be ok? Will the puppies be ok? There is that limbo again....waiting ....waiting...waiting. She's digging, she's restless, is it time? It starts....you pray with each contraction that the puppy will come quickly. You pray that each birth is uneventful. It is the middle of the night. You have been awake for 24 hours, by your girl's side. If you are lucky it will go seamlessly . If you are unlucky.....who knows?
They have all arrived. You had a couple of close calls but they are here and your girl is ok. The next 8 weeks are a constant worry mixed with spontaneous elation. The emotional rollercoaster is draining but you cannot get off. There are simply not enough hours in the day to look after everyone in the household, let alone yourself. You put pressure on yourself to do the best damn job you can with the puppies. It comes at a cost.
You need to prepare the puppies for their lives ahead and you need to prepare their owners. The day comes. The litter starts to dissipate. Tears mingle with relief and with worry. Did I pick the right homes? Will they travel ok? Will they be ok with the resident children/dogs/cats/ponies? Will their owners love them like I do?
You made mistakes, you made poor choices, things happened that you wished you could undo.....but you got through it and more importantly you learned throughout. You learned valuable lessons that will help you do better next time.
Your job is never truly finished. You are there for your puppies and their owners for the whole of their lives from birth to death.
Breeding a litter of puppies is not for the faint hearted.
Breeding a litter of puppies can truly suck.
but breeding a litter of puppies can also be the best experience ever.
The puppy anecdotes, the photos, the videos, the innately proud owners! This is what makes it worthwhile! Owners clearly adoring their puppies right into old age. You share their tears when the time comes and you are extraordinarily touched when they ask if they could be considered for another family member two, three or four times over. These people are not just owners, they are not just friends, they are family.
This post is for all those responsible breeders who loved from start to finish and can also now finally catch up on their sleep, their emails and their social lives ....until the next time.

Debs - I’m sorry to blast your page but so wanted people to share this …

*WARNING FOR MY DOGGY FRIENDS!*

What a 24 hours it has been!
Our bouncy, beautiful Pickle got very poorly yesterday. With sudden lethargy, very fast heavy breathing and hardly opening her eyes I rushed her to the vets!
There was no signs at home of her having eaten anything and I'd only gone out for an hr and a half but the vet was unsure exactly what was wrong but saud she had a lot of pain 😪 she just flaked out on the vets floor and her waggy tail stayed very still.
I was told to get her to a little doggy hospital where we handed her over and waited for the blood tests and xrays. Within 2 hours of her symptoms the vet called and said they were struggling to stabilise her and an ultrasound showed fluid around her heart and a heart murmur. So they said we needed to pick her up and get her to a specialist hospital an hr and a half away. They believed it was either a heart disease or a tumour around her heart and warned me they may have to perform open heart surgery on her...... at the end of the call the vet wanted to double check she couldn't of eaten anything toxic, labradors are known as scavengers and she is no exception! But there was no evidence of it and she wasn't vomiting etc. But the vet said "sorry I keep asking its just I've treated quite a few labradors with these symptoms when they've had salbutamol toxins"! We have 3 of us that use blue inhalers which contain salbutamol so immediately I run around looking for a chewed up inhaler but there's nothing. I then see 1 in a tub we have in our hall way up on a shelf we didn't think she could possibly reach!!! But when I looked there was a small puncture hole! She had got up on the shelf and biten into the cannister, as its pressurised it immediately released all of its doses at ones (close to 200) and she must of dropped it back in the pot!
The vet then said she wouldn't of lasted the journey to the specialist hospital and they'd transport her to one 20 mins away. She was still unstable and deteriorating. We were told it was a watch and wait situation for 24 to 48 hours. She had I.v fluids and I.v meds for her heart rate and potassium levels.....she survived the journey and at 7a.m they phoned to say she was doing so much better than expected and had already had breakfast!!! (Typical Picky! Lol) she is now at home! Very tired and her eyes are still puffy from where it went in them but the murmer and fluid have gone and they are confident she will make a full recovery!

I never knew how dangerous inhalers were and whilst we never thought she could ever reach them we also thought they weren't attractive to dogs but apparently the vets see this alot in all breeds! They take them from bags and tables etc. As they smell sweet to dogs!

She was so happy to be home and is now fast asleep on her favourite spot on the sofa although she's not happy they gave her bald patches! Lol

It's been a whirlwind of feelings for all of us but I am so happy that this warning has a happy ending! Xx

It has taken some time to post this as it has been quite a sad year at Myzchev. Earlier this year we lost Ch Myzchev Evening Storm RN TDX aka Trubel to a snake bite. He was protecting his Auntie Starrlie, aka Myzchev Black Starr. Sadly on the 26th of September, less than a month off turning 15 we lost Starrlie too.

Trubel and Starrlie were owned and loved by Jenny. Starrlie decided to live with Jenny sometime after I got her back from her previous owner who was moving back to the UK and sadly could not take her. Starrlie initially came back to me and would have stayed. But Starrlie had other ideas and after staying at Jenny's for a short while whilst I was away on a judging assignment, Starrlie decided she did not want to leave Jenny. At Jenny's she lived the life of a Queen and loved her position of Queen of all she surveyed and her slave Paul.

If Starrlie was the Queen, then Trubel was undoubtedly a Prince among Belgians. He was a talented dog gaining not only his Australian Championship title, but his Rally O Novice title and his TDX with ease. In fact he was just 2 tracks from becoming my first Dual Champion. But Trubel, ever a protector, took on a Tiger Snake that was threatening his Auntie Starrlie. Tragically he lost this fight and died on the way to the vets.

Both Starrlie and Trubel are very much missed by those who loved them most.

One day we will see you again my babies.

Today is a bitter sweet day at Myzchev Belgian Shepherds. Today I celebrate the birth of my "B" litter 15 years ago today. I wish Eski the sole surviving pup a wonderful birthday. 15 is a wonderful age to get to. To the others waiting at the bridge, I wish you all a special day too. Happy birthday my little darlings.

This will be the end of myself and many other small hobby breeders in WA.

I am extremely excited and proud that the McGowan Government is reintroducing the Stop Puppy Farming legislation into Parliament today!

The proposed laws have been overwhelmingly supported by the community and the animal welfare sector, however, were not supported by the Liberal and National parties.

The proposed new laws include:
🐾 mandatory dog sterilisation by two years of age (unless exempt)
🐾 the transition of pet shops into adoption centres
🐾 a centralised registration system to hold information on dogs, cats and approved breeders, to assist with monitoring and enforcement
🐾 the de-muzzling of pet greyhounds
