Until we meet again ๐๐๐พ
Taffy was there when I started my journey as a dog trainer, being one of the first generation of service dogs I trained, and was blessed to have her stay in the family for the last 12 years.
She was the first Lab I truly fell in love with, who melted my heart with her compassion towards others and her desire to please and nurture. She would always be by your side ready to lend a paw at a moments notice, with her happy tail ALWAYS wagging at hyper speed. She grew up with my girls, Rosie and Pearl, and welcomed every newcomer to our home as our four-legged family grew. She was a dog that could do no wrong, and would sacrifice everything to help the ones she loved. This girl will always have a very very special place in my heart. Anyone who had the gift of meeting her was touched by her kind soul and unconditional love.
Until we meet again my sweet girl, I love you so much.

Huge shoutout to Disco and his handler today on their first official graduation session! ๐๐๐ฅณ This team jumped right into action as we practiced obedience skills in the packed crowd of at T.Y. park. Energy & Persistence conquers all things:
๐พ๐ฉตA personal story that explains my passion to train detection dogs for people with disabilities. We all deserve the chance to thrive in life, without the looming threat of our disability holding us back. These dogs help pave the way and teach us we donโt need to carry that burden anymore. ๐ฉต๐พ
Yesterday I began to grasp the reality of what it feels like to live without a central line for the first time in almost a decadeโฆ
Yesterday at club, I worked my dogs, in the pouring rain.
I was soaked.
I even smelled like rain.
I finally was able to let go of the fear in contaminating a central line. The risk of sepsis and injury in the career of training dogs. In almost ten years, any goal achieved or new milestone, Iโd be infusing TPN.
The struggle Iโve lived with having a chronic illness never deterred me, instead motivated me to persevere.
For the first time Iโll be able to rediscover my same passions and accomplish my goals WITHOUT a Hickman catheter or active disease.
Hereโs to, enjoying the journey without needing the struggle.

Just another day at CNT ๐๐ถ๐ท
Weโve been holding out on you guys, but now itโs time to show off this little diva! ๐คฉ
Meet our newest service dog prospect, Bina! ๐๐ฉ
This gorgeous Standard Poodle puppy is as sweet as honey, and has so much love to give! Sheโs currently available for placement in our service dog program and ready to start her training!
What I love about Bina is she represents all of the amazing traits a Standard Poodle has to offer! Shes sweet and social with everyone that has greets her, devouring them in puppy kisses๐๐ถ. Bina has also blown me away with her stability and neutrality in new, chaotic environments- completely unfazed by canon fire๐งจ, loud music ๐ท๐ฅ, large crowds ๐ญ and different animals๐ฆ๐ช๐๐, embracing it all with her positive can-do energy! ๐ฅฐ๐ฉ๐
This girl wonโt stay available long, and I canโt wait to see what lucky handler will be placed with her! ๐๐๐

When is a fringe alert encouraged in detection training??? ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐จ
For most of us training detection dogs we usually train the dog to indicate at source as much as possible. But what happens when source is inaccessible? Or what if the target odor is too hazardous for the handler to be near source?
In Tobyโs case, he is learning that in public environments offering a fringe alert without being required to source large odor is exactly what we need to prevent anaphylaxis for airborne allergens like latex. ๐๐๐
The door where Toby alerted, previously held roughly 15 rubber balloons and were transported outside by the pool 3 hours before we began the search. With that large amount of latex in the environment itโs more efficient for Toby to alert at the lingering odor by the door where the balloons were stationed instead of his handler risking being in an environment surrounded by balloons poolside. ๐ฆโฑ๏ธ
But apart from his success in offering a fringe alert I was able to see how much commitment to odor he has. For 5 long minutes, Toby searched in a new environment, where there were several distractions, from dogs barking and people approaching, AND including tons of foot traffic from a rainy day outside that was stirring up odor in ways I know only this poodle could understand and navigate - and he still pushed forward and made his find in a real life scenario where this would have been life threatening to individuals with latex allergies. ๐ซ๐๐ซ
Please keep this in mind before buying balloons and opt for Mylar instead. A simple switch could save someoneโs life. But until then, we have Toby to save the day ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฉ

Learning to check door seams through hide placement๐ช ๐จ๐ฉ
Toby has been learning to check door seams at the entrances to public areas before we enter. What does this mean for a latex detection dog???
This means that his future owner wonโt fear the uncertainty of whether a store contains large amounts of latex ๐that could trigger anaphylaxis. Something as simple as our dogs clearing a threshold or checking a door seam, can make a difference in someoneโs safety and provide the freedom of not living with constant restrictions on a day to day basis.
Keep it up Tobes!!! ๐๐จ๐ฉ

Labrador puppy: an essential gardening tool to always have on hand ๐ชด๐ถ๐
Itโs really happening!!! ๐คฉ I have not been off โ๏ธ 9 since last night after Tobyโs session. This was our first attempt to introduce LOW amounts of latex odor - Toby now setting a new path for our future allergen detection dogs!!! ๐ฉ๐ฆฎ๐โ๐ฆบ
We are officially charting into new territory! There has been no detection dog documented (that Iโm aware) that has been able to detect both high and low amounts of latex odor by contextualizing their training in specific environments.
The details ๐๐๐
In this recorded line up was Tobyโs first encounter with low amounts of latex odor sourced from the OG tree itself ๐ณ, the Hevea Brasiliensis - AKA the Rubber Tree. Most of the latex was mostly dried out in these remnants. As a new odor sample we did a few runs with new distraction odors to ensure it was not the only novel odor in the room. There was NO HESITATION in his decision and instantly planted his butt down to alert.
But what does this mean???
Toby has successfully learned to search for high amounts of latex odor ๐in PUBLIC environments, but in those environments he must bypass small amounts of latex ๐พโฝ๏ธ๐คฟ๐ฉนthat wouldnโt cause an allergic reaction unless touched. (This varies with individuals)
BUT those low amounts of latex are still a threat! ๐ท Our goal and hope is to teach Toby that in a directed search he will be able to detail specific items and alert to small amounts of latex ๐๐ฉด๐๐ฉณ๐งค๐งฆ๐
The idea of these dogs saving lives is one thing, but a session like this really sinks in the reality that this will be the new future for Tobyโs family, a future safe from an airborne allergen where you donโt have to live your life in constant fear of โwhat ifsโ because you know your detection dog is there and ready to keep you safe. ๐ฉต๐ฉต๐ฉต๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฉ #latexfree #latexallergy #detectiondog

Our Story
Hello and thank you for visiting Creating New Tails on Facebook! I am Jillian Skalky, the founder of Creating New Tails. After my own health struggles and experiences, I understand first hand the priceless benefit a service dog is to their owners life.
At twelve years old I was diagnosed with Crohnโs disease. I suffered year after year with harsh limitations and chronic pain.
As my disease progressed, my aspiration for a healthy life slowly dissolved. After each surgery, ER visit, and traumatic medical experience my encouragement to live the life I had wanted seemed to be as meaningless as the gum stuck under a table; disgustingly out of place.
After my surgery in April 2011, being on the brink of death, I finally was able to see that although I may be alive, I certainly was not living. It was time to make a change. My first step to living, as silly as it seemed, was adopting a puppy named Rosie. My little puppy brought me out of the reality I created over the past decade. My sweet Rosie reminded me of my purpose: helping others. At the time I did not know, but by letting this puppy into my life I was in the making of a beautiful relationship and discovery.
I trained Rosie to be my service dog. Although I did not know of anyone who had a service dog to help with Crohnโs Disease, I knew Rosie would become the trendsetter! I was able to train Rosie multiple skills and she became even more eager to learn. I taught her picking up and carrying items, opening and closing doors, giving me balance, detecting ostomy leaks, and finding help. When my disease wanted to bubble to the surface, through allergic reactions or upcoming surgeries, Rosie was there to help. As I trained this little 38lb mixed breed, I saw her personality blossom with her desire to work.
Helping others live in their joy with the help of a furry companion is an amazing gift I am honored to offer. I have witnessed others like me; those with Crohnโs Disease, an ostomy or any life-limiting condition, struggle through life as I did. Through my experience of Crohnโs and trapped in a world of chronic pain, I created a sad reality that I was not worth being helped or deserved my own happiness. I hope to help others experience the comfort a service dog can provide in helping improve their quality of life.
