With great sadness, we share the passing of one of our retired Pentagon Force Protection Agency canines, K9 Emmie. K9 Emmie served from 2008 – 2017, alongside her handlers, Officers Paul Bailey and James Harris. K9 Emmie was a 15-year-old Labrador Retrievers who lived and served with distinction. K-9 Emmie was also a military K9 veteran, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom before making her way to the Pentagon Police Division at age 6. She will be missed by the Bailey and Harris family, and the Pentagon Police K-9 team. www.projectk9hero.org

Clarence is leaving behind an amazing legacy! 💞 Run free sweet boy... job well done. 🐾🌈

Greenfield, Mass Police Department

Retired Greenfield K9 Officer Clarence traveled over the rainbow bridge today, July 19, 2022, after a rapid decline of health.

Officer Clarence was famously known as one of the first Police Comfort Dogs. He started his life as a show dog, where he achieved a title as a champion. He also helped his handler recover from the effects of PTSD. It was quickly noticed that not only was he helping his owner, but also other first responders who were feeling the effects of PTSD. In December of 2012, at 18 months old, he was called to help federal agents and emergency personnel who responded to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He was very successful in helping the responders overcome the effects of acute stress. Officer Clarence was also asked to respond to the Boston Athletic Association to provide comfort in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing.

It was recognized that Officer Clarence had a special knack in aiding people who were full of anxiety and hampered by the effects of stress. In fall 2013, he was officially named a Police Comfort K9 for the Greenfield Police Department, where he was used as a crisis response dog until March of 2022. In December of 2013, Officer Clarence was awarded the prestigious NYC Animal Medical Center “Top Dog” Award. He shared the award with Barbara Walters and met many influential people from the New York City area, including Linda Blick from Tails of Hope Foundation, who quickly made him an ambassador for the foundation.

Officer Clarence traveled to the World Trade Center for many years, greeting people and surviving family members of the September 11 attacks at fundraising events. He helped ring the closing bell on Wall Street and was displayed on the Jumbotrons in Times Square. In 2015, Officer Clarence was invited as a representative of Tails of Hope to meet First Lady Michelle Obama’s staff at the White House in a presentation on the healing effects that dogs can provide following tragedies.

Co-owners and handlers, acting Greenfield Police Chief William Gordon and Officer Laura Gordon, along with Bradford Cole, met after Sandy Hook and decided to form an organization for the national response of trained and vetted K9’s during tragedies. They founded the nonprofit K9 First Responders. Clarence was one of the first graduates. Through the years, Officer Clarence was used at many crises, both locally and around the country. Some of his notable events included helping a child survivor of a tragic house fire in Warwick, Mass., his presence at many funerals for police officers, and response and assistance to the massacres in Las Vegas, and at the Pittsburgh Synagogue. He recently responded to the Nation's Capital for the funeral of a fallen officer. He met and helped comfort President Biden, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Charles Schumer and our local Congressman James McGovern, as well as the families of the fallen officers. During his travels, Officer Clarence met thousands of police officers, many of whom were amazed at his temperament and the healing effects he had on their departments. Municipal and state police departments, fire departments, EMS, courts, and federal agencies all over the United States, as well as several other countries, have adopted his Police Comfort K9 program. That is his legacy.

In his off time, Clarence kept himself busy as an animal actor. He appeared in a Ford commercial titled the “Barking Lot” for the F150 pickup, starred with a child actor in an Ikea commercial, starred in a Facebook ad, appeared on the Jim Gaffigan Show, Children’s Place, and on Saturday Night Live to name a few. He even skated on the ice in Rockefeller Center at Christmastime. Clarence enjoyed meeting people everywhere he went. You often could catch him trying to hold your hand with his paw. He was also a beloved member of the Gordon family where he often curled up on the couch to watch TV.

Officer Clarence was featured in multiple publications including the Epoch Times, Today Show, CNN, The National News, Politico, Police Magazine, Yahoo News, The Recorder, and local television stations. At one point “Officer Clarence” trended worldwide at #13 on Twitter.

Officer Clarence won numerous awards including the NYC AMC “Top Dog” Award, the Fraternal Order of Police Community Service award, and Grange Community Service Award. He was honored by the Saint Bernard Club of America and two mayors of Greenfield, and the Robert Kraft family recognized his work with K9FR.

Today, the Capitol Police will fly a flag over the U.S. Capitol in his honor.

Enjoy your retirement K9 Grimm!! 🎉🐾💙🇺🇸

k9_grimm

July 4, 2022 was Grimm’s last official shift riding with me. Grimm has been with me every shift since 2015/2016. His stats are great but the actual details of most all of his deployments are just known to me and the members on those calls (including the official reports). I have watched this dog do amazing things. Being my second K9 partner I had high hopes which he far exceeded my expectations. I will forever miss the little annoying nightly sounds he would make throughout the shift, his heavy head that would lay on my arm as I typed reports, his drool on my arm as we pulled into the drive through at our local coffee shops, the howling when bagpipes would come on and of course his powerful protective bark as I exited the patrol car.

Coming in September we are planing an official retirement celebration which I am anticipating opening up to the public/our followers. Stay tuned for further details as capacity could be limited depending on venue.

Thank you all for supporting us along this crazy journey serving and our community.

Good boy Axel! 🐾💙

Tacoma Police Department

Hey everyone, it’s me, Axel. Recently, I got to sniffing around and found someone on the run. An assault suspect had ignored commands from our officers and went out a window in the 5000 block of Orchard St., into a neighboring wooded area. I don’t like when that happens because a suspect can lie in wait for my partner or other officers. I was able to follow his scent through the wooded area, to nearby apartments, between structures to the corner of a building where my partner Officer Syler yelled for him to stop. I barked for him to stop too. It must have been the way I said it because he gave up without incident. He was booked for Assault in the Second Degree and Assault in the Fourth Degree, and I got to play with my partner afterward! Well, back to work, more sniffing to do. Woof!

♡ Remembering K9 Ares ♡

Ares was a dual-purpose canine with the Portage Police Department - Wisconsin. The below statement is from his family. 🐾

"Ares was born September 5, 2013 in Germany. He came to the United States shortly after he turned 1. He was paired with my husband, Sergeant Ben Neumann, in April of 2015. They finished training & started working on the road together in June of 2015.

Ares loved to work. He knew when it was time to go to work or training just by the clothes my husband was wearing. He was also a sensation at community events & was known for his ability to switch from “work mode” to his. normal, sweet disposition in seconds. People loved to watch him work, especially when he would apprehend a “suspect” in a bite suit. He would then be able to have children come up to give him pets & love within a blink of an eye. He was so loved within our community and was a huge asset to the Portage Police Department.

He served with Portage Police for 7 years. He was on duty when he had to be suddenly rushed to an emergency vet, and we were told the devastating news that he likely had an aggressive cancer called hemangiosarcoma. He passed away on 3/22/2022 at 4:44am, 3 days after receiving a diagnosis. He was 8 years old." 💙

We ❤ you K9Duke! 🐾💙

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce that Chief Norris has made the decision today to have Duke retire from active service prior to me going to back to Patrol on 02/15. He believes Duke will be a distraction and he has to look out for the best interest of the police department. It breaks my heart to have to retire my partner while I believe he has so many more positive years to give the citizens of Menlo Park and surrounding communities. Make no mistake though, we will continue to bring good will, cheer and shenanigans to the kiddos at schools, hospitals and anywhere we are needed, it just won’t be under the Menlo Park Police umbrella. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. We will also be taking a break from social media for a time while we process this new change in our partnership. Hard times doesn’t build character, it reveals it. 👮🏻‍♂️🐺🇺🇸.
