Leading horses from behind is a practice deeply rooted in observing natural behaviors within horse herds. In the wild, the lead horse guides the herd from behind or to the side, ensuring their well-being by locating resources and protecting them from threats. By using body language, subtle cues, and energetic presence, the lead horse maintains control and direction, ensuring the safety and cohesion of the herd!
Translating this concept into human-horse interactions emphasizes willingness over dominance. When I lead from behind, I emulate the herdās natural leadership dynamics, promoting cooperation and willingness. Rather than imposing authority, my goal is to encourage Porshe to move forward confidently, knowing they are guided by a capable leader who respects her needs!
This approach also enhances my ability to communicate effectively with my horse. It emphasizes the importance of timing and positioning, as even slight errors can affect the outcome. By leading from behind, I tune into my awareness of body language and develop a deeper understanding of my horseās responses. This fosters a harmonious partnership built on mutual respect and clear communication!
Ultimately, leading from behind is a holistic approach that prioritizes the horseās well-being and fosters willingness in their interactions. This was so magical! This enchanting moment with Chulita embracing the crystal bowl has ignited a strong desire within me to dive deeper into sound healing in both my work with people and horsesšš I also feel Inspired by my own experiences at sound therapy sessions with Justin, Lola,(@thelovebyrdsmusic)and Kim, I am now compelled to integrate this transformative practice into my equine work. Iām always looking to learn and grow, and I feel enthusiastic about incorporating musicians and more music into the sessions that I do!! Incorporating fun and playful exercises into horse training is very important for maintaining a horseās mental and emotional well-being!
One of the exercises Iāve been using is the ball game, where I kick a large ball, and my horse, Porsche, uses her nose to bring it back to me.
This activity not only strengthens our bond but also stimulates her mind, encouraging her to think creatively and engage with me in a cooperative and enjoyable manner!
Hannah @freespirit.stables and I have started training Porsche full-time, and our goal is to ride her in the next couple of months. Weāre working on many ground exercises in preparation for riding, with a strong focus on activities that promote both learning and play!
By incorporating exercises like the ball game, Iām able to create a training environment that is both educational and enjoyable for Porsche and myself. Playful exercises also help her develop problem-solving skills and adaptability, which are essential qualities for a well-rounded and responsive riding horse!
Moreover, these exercises are enjoyable for both Porsche and me. Itās important that I am also in a state of joy, as this positivity and enthusiasm are contagious and contribute to our overall training experience!

I try to share territory with my horses as much as possible! Currently, I am not riding any of them and so if I am not doing any Liberty ground exercises I often find myself in their area sharing territory! I first learned of sharing territory from my wonderful teacher, Carolyn Resnick and I feel so grateful to have learned something so simple yet profound!
