Do you prefer mountains or beaches to travel? What about your pets? This was three years ago in Hallstat, Austria, on our way for a ski weekend. I love the mountains. There is just something so peaceful and beautiful about them.

I spent the last 4 days getting certified to judge and host Detection Dog Trials with a great group of passionate scent work people. I am really excited about the judging criteria and the opportunity to trial with lots of different scents! I will share more details soon.

Gunther room search. I love watching this guy search. It's one of his favorite things to do. Also unrelated to the searching... this video is an excellent example of tell me you are a dog trainer without telling me you are a dog trainer. 🤣 Not because he is searching but because of all the dog training stuff in my living room and yes it often looks like that. 🤷‍♀️🤣

Disabilities and Natural Disasters. It's something not all of us think about, but it's a really horrible situation to be in for lots of disabled people. 3 people have died in the LA fires due to their disabilities not being able to be accommodated. That is just not okay. Imagine if you have lost your house and are forced to live in a temporary shelter and you have food allergies? Food banks are often reliant on donations, and you get what you can get. Imagine having to choose between eating a potentially dangerous food or eating at all? Imagine you lost your house and you use a wheelchair? The shelter you are staying at isn't ADA compliant, and you can't get around? The trauma of a natural disaster is terrible enough, but then, to face the additional difficulties of living in a society that doesn't accommodate so many disabilities is terrible.

Do you have snow right now? We don't have any snow in California, but all my friends in the Midwest and East Coast are buried right now. So, in honor of that, here is a throwback photo of Gunther pulling a sled in Germany 4 years ago.

Freya and Toby got mail! I am very proud of these two for earning their Novice Draft Dog Titles with very little prep time. It's a testament to training sport dog foundations. Good foundations will help you in any sport you do with your dogs.

Happy Monday! Let's start the week off right. What is something you are looking forward to or something good that happened recently?

I will start! Freya had a great intro to competitive agility with the North American Dog Agility Council (NADAC). She ran in tunnelers and jumpers and placed first in all her rounds. She seemed to really enjoy the game and had good focus on me at the event and in the ring. So it was fun for both of us, exactly what it should be in my opinion.

We call this the bouvier bounce in our house. I groomed Gunther yesterday and he was so fluffy the kids wanted to take a slow mo video of him bouncing to see the hair. 🤣

I made this a few years ago, but it still cracks me up. Play along! If your you aren't a dog trainer, then tell me you are a dog person without telling me you are a dog person.

Text reads: Tell me you are a dog trainer without telling me you are a dog trainer. Mine is: My son told me he thinks he is a resource guarder because he doesn't want to share his toys.

Gluten Detection

Sometimes despite our best efforts it is impossible to avoid gluten in our world. When my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac and needed to avoid even the smallest amount of gluten, I began to realize what a daunting and near impossible task that would be. Labeling laws allow for small amounts of gluten to be present in items and have them still be labeled Gluten FREE, yes read that again. It is possible to label something as Gluten Free and it can still contain gluten. In addition to this items that do not contain gluten naturally can be produced on the same lines as gluten containing items and be labeled gluten free. These issues and others can make it impossible for some of those individuals with Celiac to recover their health because they are constantly being exposed to low doses of gluten. In some of these cases a Gluten detection dog is the answer. After my daughter was diagnosed I worked with a wonderful trainer named Dawn Scheu at Willow Service Dogs Inc. to train our adult family dog Lilly to detect Gluten. My back ground in dog training made it possible for Lilly to start working quickly as she was already trained for safe public access. Unfortunately we lost Lilly suddenly to cancer shortly after she was fully trained. Thankfully we were already on a wait list for a puppy from a wonderful breeder who we had met with prior to losing Lilly! Gunther came along shortly after to mend our broken hearts and start training to protect our family (3 out of 4 of our family needs to be Gluten Free). Gunther began his training right away and was working at home before he was 6 months old. Gunther can reliably smell small amounts of cross contamination from gluten which not only keeps our family healthy but allows us to live a more normal life. Gluten detection dogs are definitely not for everyone but at the moment they are the most reliable method of testing items for contaminated gluten with a much higher reliability rate then commercially available testing devices. Last year I was asked to be part of an non profit organization O.D.O.R. Service Dogs Inc. that has worked hard to create minimum standards for working Scent Detection Dogs. I am honored to be part of an organization that hopes to make sure everyone has a service dog that is working safely and reliably. You can look at the standards which Gunther has been tested to at www.odorservicedogs.org.
