Freya and Toby got mail! I am very proud of these two for earning their Novice Draft Dog Titles with very little prep time. It's a testament to training sport dog foundations. Good foundations will help you in any sport you do with your dogs.

Happy Monday! Let's start the week off right. What is something you are looking forward to or something good that happened recently?

I will start! Freya had a great intro to competitive agility with the North American Dog Agility Council (NADAC). She ran in tunnelers and jumpers and placed first in all her rounds. She seemed to really enjoy the game and had good focus on me at the event and in the ring. So it was fun for both of us, exactly what it should be in my opinion.

We call this the bouvier bounce in our house. I groomed Gunther yesterday and he was so fluffy the kids wanted to take a slow mo video of him bouncing to see the hair. 🤣

I made this a few years ago, but it still cracks me up. Play along! If your you aren't a dog trainer, then tell me you are a dog person without telling me you are a dog person.

Text reads: Tell me you are a dog trainer without telling me you are a dog trainer. Mine is: My son told me he thinks he is a resource guarder because he doesn't want to share his toys.

Happy Birthday to the newest member of our family, Toby! We may not have had him since he was a puppy, but it feels like he has always been here! He has learned gluten detection, public access training, dock diving, drafting, and tried out frisbee in his time with us and we are excited for his future! We are so happy to have him in the family.

Toby and Freya did great at the Santa Monica Pier and the Hollywood walk of fame in LA. The funniest thing happened, though. So many people thought they were siblings??? Okay, Freya isn't in a traditional Bouvier cut, but come on, do you think she looks like a standard poodle??? I don't take offense or anything. I just think it's funny.

Happy American Thanksgiving! From my Family to yours! Gunther missing from the dog pile because that is very much not his idea of a good time. 🤣 He wants me all to himself.

Because we like our birthdays 2 years and a day apart in my house (my kids are also 2 years and a day apart), it is Freya's turn. Happy 5th birthday to my partner in crime. Always eager to learn, she is my do anything, go anywhere dog, but is 100 percent a Bouvier in personality. Aloof with strangers (who needs them?) devoted and enamored with her people. She loves to train and learn new things and is constantly making me look good in all the different sports we try. I took the photo when I called her into front position because I just love the look on her face when she works and I wanted to capture it!

I can't believe this little guy is 7 years old today! Happy birthday, Gunther! Gluten detection, search and rescue, autism support, drafting, pulling a sled, obedience, agility, dock diving, herding, and traveling/ living all over the world you have risen to all these challenges and more. You are, first and foremost, an amazing companion ❤️ but you are also so much more than that to our family. Happy birthday, and I hope we get to spend many more years together having fun and learning!

Throw back photo of Gunther and I five years ago in the Austrian Alps for a ski weekend. There's no snow here right now, but we are hoping to head to Tahoe this winter to get some skiing in!

Gluten Detection

Sometimes despite our best efforts it is impossible to avoid gluten in our world. When my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac and needed to avoid even the smallest amount of gluten, I began to realize what a daunting and near impossible task that would be. Labeling laws allow for small amounts of gluten to be present in items and have them still be labeled Gluten FREE, yes read that again. It is possible to label something as Gluten Free and it can still contain gluten. In addition to this items that do not contain gluten naturally can be produced on the same lines as gluten containing items and be labeled gluten free. These issues and others can make it impossible for some of those individuals with Celiac to recover their health because they are constantly being exposed to low doses of gluten. In some of these cases a Gluten detection dog is the answer. After my daughter was diagnosed I worked with a wonderful trainer named Dawn Scheu at Willow Service Dogs Inc. to train our adult family dog Lilly to detect Gluten. My back ground in dog training made it possible for Lilly to start working quickly as she was already trained for safe public access. Unfortunately we lost Lilly suddenly to cancer shortly after she was fully trained. Thankfully we were already on a wait list for a puppy from a wonderful breeder who we had met with prior to losing Lilly! Gunther came along shortly after to mend our broken hearts and start training to protect our family (3 out of 4 of our family needs to be Gluten Free). Gunther began his training right away and was working at home before he was 6 months old. Gunther can reliably smell small amounts of cross contamination from gluten which not only keeps our family healthy but allows us to live a more normal life. Gluten detection dogs are definitely not for everyone but at the moment they are the most reliable method of testing items for contaminated gluten with a much higher reliability rate then commercially available testing devices. Last year I was asked to be part of an non profit organization O.D.O.R. Service Dogs Inc. that has worked hard to create minimum standards for working Scent Detection Dogs. I am honored to be part of an organization that hopes to make sure everyone has a service dog that is working safely and reliably. You can look at the standards which Gunther has been tested to at www.odorservicedogs.org.
