The Longview team will be available this Friday night at Becky Hinerman ‘s Hinerman Arena for upper airway endoscopic exams following your runs. Pending appointments from the day, our goal is to be there right at 6pm.

As a reminder, this is an exam to check for upper airway abnormalities, as well as exercise induced bleeding that occurs in the lungs— which is performance limiting! This service takes about 5 minutes to perform and no sedation is required (but that depends on your horse’s behavior)!

Commonly asked questions:

Q: I am already giving my horse Lasix? Can you still scope it?
A: Yes. It’s a good idea to ensure the dose you are giving is actually working. However, if you have just been giving Lasix as a “preventative” or because someone told you that you should, you can always try running them without it and we can check to see if they truly need it.

Q: Can I just lunge my horse for a little bit and you check him after?
A: Depends on what you are trying to find with the exam. Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) occurs when a horse’s blood pressure exceeds the strength of the walls of the blood vessels within the lungs. It’s difficult to mimic the “hype” for many barrel horses. This means— we can breeze a barrel horse on a race track, and it may not show signs of bleeding. If we trailer that same horse to a show, with the other horses and the lights and the rider feeling excited— boom, he’s a bleeder.
So if you are hoping to determine if your horse is a bleeder, it probably won’t be effective, but we still would be able to monitor airway function and see if there are any abnormal things going on in the “throat” (larynx).

Q: I showed on Sunday, could you scope her Monday morning at your clinic?
A: We could, but similar to the last answer^^^, depends on what you are hoping to find. Ideally, the scope is passed once a horse is cooled out, and up to a few hours later. We’ve definitely checked a horse the next day, but usually by that time the blood has been absorbed, or coughed up, and is no longer in a visible portion of the airway. There is a procedure that can be performed to check for bleeding when this is the case— but it must be performed at the clinic. If you have questions about this— just call!

Q: How much does it cost?
A: The price varies depending on our travel costs and vendor fees. Usually it ranges from $40-80. Please be prepared with cash— it makes everything easier!

If you are hosting shows and would like us to come hang out and offer this service for your people, please let us know! Our new endoscope allows everyone to watch the exam on a computer screen in real time, and then we can snag great pictures for you to have… like these ones below of blood in a trachea following a pattern!

“Happy Veterianry Technician Week to the backbone of our practice. Jaide and Jackie are two of the very best in the business. These women are critical thinkers who would do absolutely anything to ensure the health of your horse. They each have a willingness to learn and teach, and their positive attitudes with our students, clients, and patients is truly what keeps people coming back. There is no veterinarian that can confidently and effectively do their job without the right partner. We appreciate these men and women in our community every day, but it’s always important to celebrate good people when you can. Thank your vet techs this week and every day!!

From Pennsylvania to Ohio to Tennessee— Thank you to all the veterinary technicians that helped to make me the vet that I am. These are the people that taught me how to draw blood, wrap legs, take radiographs, analyze cytologies, place catheters, perform sterile technique… the list goes on and on. Longview exists because of your compassion over the last 15+ years of my journey!”
Love, Haley Rose Sutton

Good morning Garwood Arena!!☀️ Day Two of A Bucking Nightmare Benefit Barrel Race was a success getting to do two of our favorite things— ✨play with horses and talk way too much✨

We met a lot of great people. We didn’t have a single horse give us any trouble, and we found information that will help you change your runs for the better. Out of two pages of horses evaluated, only two were completely clean (no issues observed)!

Thank you all so much for giving us the opportunity to combine our passions of riding and medicine. We love this community so much!

Call today at 724.470.0456 to get in a scope this morning before we head back to work in Washington, Pa this afternoon🐴🎃

Thank you to our models, Chasey Wain and ….. (can anyone tell these white things apart???)

Who is ready for Dreaming of Three ‘s A Bucking Nightmare Benefit Barrel Race ???

The LVC team with be available for airway scoping following your runs! Although we are a vendor, we will not have a booth— we will come to you!

Ideally, we like to pass the endoscope about an hour after your run. Call the clinic line, let us know your draw number along with a stall number! Once confirmed, we will start your timer and meet you at your stall. This service takes about 5 minutes (usually less). Sedation is very rarely required.

See you all very soon!!🎃🐴

We love pumpkin spice just as much as the next girl, but the cool weather and changing leaves mean it’s time to keep grinding in the barrel horse world! We are hitting that point in the year where your horse may be needing a tune up after a summer full of hard work. Happy to have this guy feeling his best and back on the road (all thanks to the lovely emotional support of Leena🐽). Safe travels and good luck to everyone who is continuing to hustle through this season💪🍂🍁🐴

New business cards because our girl Jaide Serock passed her board exam— which means she now has some extra fancy letters behind her name!! We could not be more proud of her and all her hard work. We are so lucky to have such an intelligent and compassionate horsewoman on our team!

Congrats Jaide Serock, CVT 🐴✨

See y’all there!🐴✨
