Sir Floof! He will be joining us this weekend for an obedience refresher and to work through some sudden anxieties. He was a school therapy dog and would love to get back into his job. He helps special needs children and he is a great helper in teaching children to have confidence in their reading ability!!

DNA makes for many dogs in disguise! 🎃 At Embark, we see lots of pups presumed to be Lab mixes who then test as American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT) or APBT mixes. 🐶

This can understandably cause some confusion but makes sense once you know that almost 15% of mixed-breed dogs in North America have APBT ancestry. 🧬

Happy birthday, to Buddy, The first Seeing Eye dog! Buddy was born on October 15, 1926, in Switzerland. About 16 months later she was matched with Morris Frank, a 20-year-old college student and insurance salesman who had traveled from America to be matched with a dog who could guide a blind person. He promptly renamed the German shepherd Buddy. This historic photo shows Morris Frank being guided around a tricycle on a sidewalk by Buddy.
Morris and Buddy traveled the country demonstrating that it really was possible for a dog to work as a guide. But soon they had another challenge: public access. Many stores, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses had a strict "no dogs allowed" policy, and there were no exceptions for service dogs -- after all, they had just been invented! Morris and Buddy campaigned tirelessly for the right to go anywhere that any other member of the public can go. While giving a speech in Washington, D.C., someone had the bright idea of having Morris give a demonstration of Buddy's abilities -- without telling Morris about it. The route Morris had taken to the stage to give his talk was quietly blocked with chairs. When Morris gave Buddy the command to leave the stage the way they'd come, she refused. "She had watched the whole proceeding from the platform and had seen the complicated series of impediments set up for us," Morris wrote in "First Lady of The Seeing Eye". "Without a second's hesitation she simply took me the quickest, safest way to our destination."
Rather than navigating through the obstacle course, Buddy led Morris across the stage and to a different, unblocked aisle. Problem solved! "The audience went wild with applause. By taking the commonsense way out of our predicament, Buddy had given a far more remarkable demonstration of her prowess than they had ever anticipated," Morris wrote.

A very common question I get from owners when a dog is here for Board & Train: “well what happens when…”

Nothing. Nothing happens when… because I don’t set the dog up to fail like that.

I train and prepare a dog. Baby steps. LEASH ON. We trainers, we use a leash a lot, and for a very long time, for a reason.

A leash is a communication tool, not simply a restraint tool.

I am not going to see what your dog does without a leash until they know what to do WITH a leash.

I am not going to see what your dog does when someone knocks until I see that they know how to act when someone doesn’t and just walks in.

I am not going to see your dog’s reaction to situation B, until I know they can respond appropriately to situation A.

When trainers do things in small steps and with leashes on, it’s because we are TEACHING. We aren’t running around, throwing dogs into situations that could be scary or stressful, hoping for the best and crossing our fingers which are subsequently sitting on an ecollar button.

How would you feel if you went to school, were told to do a geometry problem when all you know is basic math, then socked in the face when you get it wrong?

The LEASH is the ultimate teaching tool. It’s how we teach the geometry to the student who only knows basic math. It’s how we communicate.

If your dog can’t do it ON a leash, your dog can’t do it OFF a leash.

Put the leash on the dog.

Adding another skill to my arsenal. Always good to know basic first aide but this class is going to go through some really advanced medical training! Put on by Cheryl Nelson, DVM a Purdue graduate that wrote the medical procedures for the FBI K9 team and the one for the Army Special Forces! A 60K robotic dog is used for the hands on training and it apparently breathes and barks and bleeds among other things.
