Safe Haven Rescue MS Safe Haven Rescue of MS is a 501c3 nonprofit home foster-based rescue. (payoal)

We saves lives of dogs, young & old, that would otherwise be euthanized in the southern high risk shelters.

03/01/2025

353 lives were saved throughout 2024 for Safe Haven Rescue MS. Sadly, we lost a few along the way, but many went to new homes & families. Rescue is never easy, but it can be so rewarding. Our hearts break for the ones we lost, our hearts ache for the pain so many ensure before rescue. We cry tears of joy and tears of sadness.

Despite donations at an all time low, we are proud that we made a difference for so many who otherwise didn't stand a chance.

We have high vet bill debt still (over $7K) and because of that and no funds coming in for food, shavings, emergency care, and more, we are forced to be on intake hold until further notice.

This is NOT how we wanted to start 2025, and we know the calls will continue to come in, but we can't do this alone.

We are looking for sponsors who can potentially send a monthly donation ($50 or more per month) to help save lives. Being home foster based also means we are at the mercy of space for the ones we save.

Having multiple dogs & pups in each foster takes a lot of patience and love. We desperately need more fosters willing to share their home and love to save a life.

We hope everyone has a Happy New Year and we pray we can save more lives together in 2025.

It’s crucial to get outdoor pets ready for the impending cold snap next week! Highs in the 30's and lows in the teens are coming!
BRING THEM INSIDE: The best option is to keep all pets indoors. However, if they must stay outside, ensure they have adequate protection from the harsh cold. Breeds like Huskies are equipped to handle winter thanks to their thick double coats, which provide insulation. On the other hand, dogs like Pit mixes, with their thinner coats and exposed undersides, are more susceptible to the cold and should either be brought inside or given insulated shelter. Puppies and older, frail, or sick dogs are particularly at risk in cold weather and require additional protection.
PROVIDE SHELTER: When temperatures drop below 45 degrees, having access to an insulated doghouse, garage, or shed can help keep your dog warm. Dogs that are used to living indoors or in milder climates should not be left outside during freezing conditions. Make sure the shelter is readily accessible, as you may not be home when the temperatures plummet.
INSULATE SHELTER: While a plastic or wooden doghouse can shield them from wind, it won't keep them warm without proper insulation. Use straw bedding—not hay—to insulate outdoor shelters. If you’re using straw to insulate a doghouse, it should be packed tightly along the sides and back. The dog should be able to burrow down into the straw for warmth. Bales of straw typically cost $10 or less at local feed stores and can fill 3-4 doghouses.

The Forgotten Dog’s Christmas Poem

Twas the night before Christmas when all thru the house,
Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nick soon would be there.
The children all nestled snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mom in her kerchief and I in my cap,
Knew the dog was cold but didn’t care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus with his eyes full of tears.
He unchained the dog once so lively and quick,
Last year’s Christmas present now painfully sick.
More rapid than eagles he called the dog’s name,
And the dog ran to him despite all his pain.
Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and V***n,
On Comet on Cupid on Donner and Blitzen.
To the top of the porch to the top of the wall,
Let’s find this dog a home where he will be loved by all.
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa had made one thing quite clear.
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the dog for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of the kids a gift,
There was one important thing we missed.
A dog should be family and cared for the same,
You don’t give a gift, then put it on a chain.

And I heard him explain as he rode out of site,
“You weren’t given a gift, you were given a life.”

Who doesn't love and golden retreiver!!! Well, Buddy found himself homeless and alone. His owner (85 yr old woman) has loved Buddy for 9 years (yep, his entire life) and lost her home to a fire in late October.

She was forced to put Buddy in boarding as she searched for a place to stay. She was able to find temporary housing for herself, but not for Buddy.

Over 3 weeks in boarding, she decided to have him put to sleep since she couldn't afford to continue boarding and that is no life for Buddy.

We were notified of this decision and quickly stepped in to help. Buddy was taken to our vet for 1 night and then picked up by one of our amazing fosters.

Buddy settled in fine the first night. We even chuckled at him maneuvering himself in the doggie door. You see, Buddy is obese! 45-55 # overweight. How obese you ask..... 102 # on a body meant to be maybe 55 #.

Unfortunately, Buddy did not get along with the deaf male dog in the foster home and found himself back in boarding.

We desperately need to find a home for Buddy where he can decompress. Get lots of daily excercise with walks and no extra treats.

Please consider helping Buddy find his place and be safe and loved for the Christmas season. We need to get better assessment on him to ensure we place him in a proper home for his final years.

If you have ever considered becoming a foster, now is the time to open your home and your heart to give it a try. The joy it brings knowing you help save a life, is rewarding.

Please share and help Buddy find a soft bed and not a concrete floor for the holidays.

As we enter the end of year 2024, even with the holidays and busy schedules, we are still asked to help so many dogs needing rescue.

There is a multitude of reasons, but that isn't what matters.

What is important is that these dogs are safe and will be looking for northern rescues or adopters when they are ready.

Buddy, a 9 yr old Golden is loved by his 85 yr old owner. However losing their home to a fire, Buddy had no place he could go to be with his owner (of all 9 years) Buddy is sweet, soft, extra fluffy (yes, he will be on a diet), and gentle. He gets along with other dogs, and has made himself quite comfortable in his foster home. However, Buddy should weigh about 50-55 # and is currently 102 #. Lots to love, but we want him healthy weight.

We also have Re*****on a 1 yr old 12 # toy poodle who will be staying with our rescue president. Re*****on is good with other dogs, kids, people and a very sweet boy. He still needs neutered and some in house training, but we know there is a special family for Re*****on.

And let's not forget our sweet girl, Dutchess, who was picked up as a stray by local ACO with her tail ripped, broken, degloved and in pain. We didn't have a plan, but we knew she needed our help. Dutchess underwent surgery for a tail amputation and we are so pleased with her nub. It goes perfectly with her wiggle. Dutchess is small at 35 #.

We pray this holiday season brings joy for all families and dogs of rescue. Please consider a small donation on behalf of rescue so we can continue to help the unwanted dogs of Mississippi.

03/12/2024

On this Giving Tuesday please consider donating to become a part of our mission to promote, educate and provide rescue care for dogs & pups in our community & in Mississippi. Even when I'm 1500 miles away, rescue doesn't stop.

Thank you to Starsha Allen with Shebas for answering my plea to get momma and search for pups.

Momma and her 2 babies are safe with our rescue and will see our vet by Tuesday.

Please consider helping this family so we can get them all the proper care they desperately need.

I know lots of dogs & pups would LOVE some holiday treats this season.

If anyone is able to donate some oats, peanut butter, or plain pumpkin puree, please let us know.

We are looking forward to treating lots of pups and spreading some joy.

(Please make sure the peanut butter is safe for dogs. Look for peanut butters that are specifically marketed for dogs, or unsalted peanut butters that list peanuts as the only ingredient.
Avoid xylitol
Xylitol is a sugar substitute that's poisonous to dogs and can be found in some peanut butters, especially lower or sugar-free varieties)

True rescue never gives up.
For 2 years we have tried to catch 'ShackPak Momma Dog" . She's getting older and litter after litter she is drained of a happy life.

We've been told She's had at least 5 litters. Our rescue has helped 2 of those. (SHACK Pack Pups and ShackPaK2) Her pups are gorgeous, happy and lucky to have been the Safe Haven Rescue of MS pups with a bright future.

Several of our fosters decided to give it another try. Trap Momma and end the pregnancy cycle she endures over and over. After all, we did s/n 5 other dogs in the same "land area" yet, some other dog somewhere always seemed to find her.

With a little meds, some chicken, 2 fosters, and a kennel, for 2.5 hours she would eat some and sit back. We were beginning to wonder if she'd ever get drowsy.

Momma started going towards the kennel... where the food was coming from. (On the back side). Slowly she inched her way closer and the 2 fosters were able to close the kennel door!!

Momma was caught!!!

We named her Georgia (from Georgetown)

She needed her vaccines, meds, and spay. She is now resting comfortably at our rescue home.

Please pray for Georgia and her recovery. All donations are tax deductible with our 501c3.

20/11/2024

We may never know what really happened to Dutchess, but whatever it was or whoever it was, she did not deserve the pain.

Picked up by local ACO and taken to the pound, this medium framed female was is agonizing pain and NO help in sight. You see, the pound has no money for emergency cases, so either a rescue steps up or the dog is euthanized.
We couldn't bear the thought of her doing by bleeding out or euthanasia, so we had her go to our local vet asap.
Her tail was broken, split, ripped off and degkoved. A pain and constant bleeding that had her scared and sad.
Dutchess had xrays and we found some other soreness & swelling, but no other broken bones. She went into emergency surgery, where she underwent the amputation of her entire tail.
Dutchess may look like a bobtail dog now, but she is pain free and will be looking for a furever home.
Our rescue runs solely on donations to cover emergency situations such as these. We know time is urgent on many of these cases, like Dutchess.
All donations are tax deductible for our 501c3 non-profit rescue.
Please consider helping Dutchess and our rescue to continue helping the ones in need.

Meet Lola, the 2 yr old Rottweiler who's owner neglected to care for her properly.

Surrendered and scared, Lola had to be sedated to get her into the vet office. She weighs 89 #, has bad eye infections, yeast infection all over her back, a lump on her spine area on her back, fleas all over and NOT spay.

Lola was tested for Heartworms and luckily she is 4dx- . She is being dewormed, eye treatment, and scheduled for spay this week. She will also get a medicated bath and meds for her skin.
Lola needs lots of prayers and caring individuals who can help towards her care.
The rescue is dedicated to helping, but funds are non existing at this time.
If you can donate $5 or even $10, it is greatly appreciated and Lola can get her full care she needs.

*UPDATE 11/21/24 Lola is in her spay surgery and her eyes will be checked also to see if any surgical procedure is needed. Please keep sending prayers for Lola and if you're able to donate, all donations are greatly appreciated.

12/11/2024

Our rescue is in high debt for all the emergency care we've been providing for so many neglected and injured dogs & pups.

From amputation to cyst removal, ER visits, to basic care. Rescue is NOT a money maker like so many think. Debt is our middle name.

We currently owe $400 to Hometown vet for Ivan. He will have his bloodwork, neuter and cyst removed and biopsy done. 601-825-1697

We owe All About Animals Vet Clinic in Crystal Springs $3024 for all the care on dogs and cats over the past few months. We are desperately needing to pay them. 601-892-7512

We owe Animal Medical Center in Brookhaven $1095.09 for 2 dogs that were emergencies. One was bleeding from a major injury and sitting in the city pound.(Duchess) and the 2nd was an ER after hours for Joe last night. 601-833-0589

We owe Copiah Animal Hospital $3500+ for momma Wendy & her miracle 4 babies who were being eaten alive by flies & maggots. Topaz the kitten saved from a horrible chance at death. Snickers the kitten who was trapped and cared for. Lola the Rottweiler we took in yesterday needing major health care. Momma Georgia who after 2 years and 5 litters, was finally trapped and needs to be spay & vaccinated. 3 bottle babies who survived from the original 8, who have been under care since days old. The 5 Shack pax2 Celestial pups who were saved from a fallen in Shack needing care and vaccines. 601-892-4607

And the list goes on and on. We can't do this alone. We do the hard work of digging and searching and praying we can save them, but even as our hearts are compassionate about what we do, we forget the financial responsibility at the moment and focus on saving them. This is where the sadness and stress come in when we owe our amazing vets for all they do to help us and we just don't have the funds.

If ANYONE knows how to do grant writing, or can help in any way, please let us know.

If ANYONE can make any type of donation, whether to our rescue directly or by calling in a donation to any one of our vets, we would be greatly appreciative.

We need your help and thank you for supporting us.

*UPDATE 11/21
Momma Wendy is finally ready to have some peace & quiet of her own. Sent to foster where she can "dry up" to be ready for her spay in a couple weeks.

Her 4 sweet loving babies (Peter Pan, Captain Hook, T***s, and Tinkerbelle) will be going to their new foster this afternoon. Peter Pan is having some difficulty with getting up on all 4 legs at this time, so we are keeping a watchful eye on him. Little Tinkerbelle is getting the hang of it slowly. Captain Hook (the big boy) is in full fast mode, while T***s is just follow the leader and doing well.

UPDATE 11/8
You won't believe this...... 5 days later another baby was found STILL ALIVE!!! He was just rushed to our vet and immediately tended to. FULL of maggots in his body, bathed, dipped, cleaned and went straight to mom. She took him and licked him as he went to nurse. How he survived is a MIRACLE. We named him T***s
Dying before your eyes even open, filled with flies & maggots, is NO way to be born into this world.

This poor baby was found a little too late. RIP little one. This world was too cruel for you.

A momma (33 #) and her will to survive and tend to her babies was a challenge.

Out in the woods, with predators all around, she did the best she could with what she was dealing with.

A woman called in a frantic. Out on her property, she went to set up a camper and her whimpering. Following the sounds, deep beneath dirt and trash and briars was a momma and her 4 babies covered in flies and maggots.

She scooped them up and bathed them best she could to clean the filth and life sucking maggots off. She kept them safe for the night, not knowing what to do come morning.

When she awoke and went to get the mom & pups loaded, she found the one with the most injuries and maggots had passed away.

She went to the local shelter where she was greeted with a smile, but discouraged they couldn't help. She sat in her car and wept. Knowing her only choice was the open intake in Jackson who would euthanize and end any suffering.

However, luckily the shelter staff called the manager who just so happened to be having lunch with me. I told her to get them to our rescue vet immediately.

I rushed to meet the mom & pups at our vet and assisted in the cleansing. The antibiotic flush on 2 week old pups was a challenge. Maggots coming out of their ears (which aren't even opened) and their eyes (also not opened) and even under the skin on the one with the bad back scab.

It broke my heart to hear them crying in agony as we carefully pulled out the maggots and the scab sluffed off. We were able to scrub and put ointment on his back.

The largest of the 3 surviving pups is 2.5 # where the other 2 are 1lb 6oz and 1 lb 7 oz.
Momma is an amazing momma. Beautiful, healthy, short legs, and thankfully 4dx-

We named her Wendy and her little girl is Tinkerbelle. Her 2 boys are Peter Pan & Captain Hook.

Ivan is a sweet 8 yr old that has NO idea he hasn't something he shouldn't.

Not 1, but 2 mass tumors on his back side needing removed and biopsy done.

We have opted to do at the same time as his neuter appointment the 1st week in November. However, quoted $500-$600 for the removal and Biopsy, we need help.

Ivan deserves every chance at a normal life, despite what ever the results may be. We have faith that all will be okay.

Please help Ivan & our rescue so we can get him the proper care and surgical procedure he needs.

Rescue isn't for the weak. It will bring you so much sadness & yet , will bring so much joy & happiness, too.

Some days are easier than others. Some days we wish we could just not get that call. Rescue is exhausting.

Even when we are worried there are just too many to help, we do what we can with what we have.

Today, 5 little beautiful babies were saved and are home in foster care with Safe Haven Rescue MS president/ owner. The "shack" they were born at was a "death trap" and their momma has been a challenge to catch. This is her known 5th litter (her 2nd for our rescue) and we are determined to save her, too. She deserves a life of love and NO MORE babies. She has done her best and it shows.

Meet Galaxy, Comet, Celeste, Eclipse, and little Aurora ♥️ These 5.5 week old babies will know only love and care from this day forward.

If anyone would like to make any kind of donation towards their needs (puppy pads, puppy food, dewormer, blankets, laundry detergent, bleach, and more) we have PayPal & Venmo. (Links below)

Just look at these faces!! They are LOVED.
