Warning: Long Post...Puppies!! What a week Tottie girl and I have had. Sickness, puppy delivery, surgery, and finally it seems the storms have passed.
- Saturday, May 4th I was suppose to perform with my line dance team at the Taylorsville, Apple Blossom Festival when a huge storm shut the performance down. I thought that was kind of a blessing because I wasn't feeling very well. Amidst the storm, we arrived home to find Tottie in labor and having already delivered her first puppy. Instead of delivering in the whelping house, she delivered him outside in the pouring rain around 2:00pm.
- With her first litter, Tottie was not the best mother to begin with and with this second litter, her mothering instincts weren't kicking in well. While I began feeling worse, (fever, cough, body aches) she delivered her first 3 puppies and wanted nothing to do with them. Mike and I couldn't leave her for fear she would have a puppy and just let it die so we stayed by her side.
- Finally, after puppy 4 her mothering instincts began coming back and she began caring for the puppies. I still didn't feel comfortable leaving her but was feeling so badly that I had to come in, laydown, and watch the baby monitor camera. Each time she labored I went out to make sure everything went ok.
- By 7:00am Sunday morning we had 8 new puppies and Tottie and I were exhausted. Tottie passed out and I thought we were done so I decided it was time to get a nap myself.
- At 8:30am I woke up to check on her and there were 2 new little ones, one of which did not make it. Tottie was done with 9 precious puppies!
- Sunday was spent with me sick and feeling terrible checking on momma and puppies every 2 hours to make sure all were eating and mom was doing well. The last puppy born was so tiny and I wasn't sure she would pull through but we kept a check on her and kept her on mom as much as possible.
- Tottie was doing great at mothering now. She was rotating everyone, keeping everyone clean, and resting. Something didn't really feel right about how her body was responding after giving birth but I thought maybe I was just being overly concerned.
- About 6:00pm Sunday evening, Tottie passed a left over placenta which for me that was a long time after the last puppy. Around 12 hours. I was getting sicker by the hour and constantly staying with Tottie was not helping.
- I called out of work Monday morning thinking I was going to have to go to the Dr. Throughout the night Sunday and into Monday morning, I noticed Tottie's discharge was not normal. I won't get too graphic here but as a breeder, you know what to look for and when something doesn't look right, it's a good indication that it's not. Rather than taking myself to the Dr., about 8:00am Mike and I loaded Tottie and 9 puppies up for a visit to the Emergency Vet.
- They confirmed my fear, Tottie had developed Emphysematous Pyometra which was a gas-forming bacteria in her uterus. That meant surgery and she would have to be spayed immediately to save her. Also, the smallest puppy was really struggling and the vet felt she was not going to make it so we had to make the choice to have her euthanized.
- All day at the vet with none of my over the counter meds to help with my own sickness symptoms made for an extremely miserable day!! I have had Covid twice and the symptoms I had felt exactly like the worse of the two cases I had before.
- We finally got Tottie and the puppies home and settled around 6:00pm Monday evening. She was so heavily sedated that Mike and I had to go lift her up every 2 hours to make her move around and try to force her to eat and drink. Mike had to go to work Tuesday but I called out again because I knew at this point, I had to go to the Dr. I wasn't getting any better. So Monday night into Tuesday morning, I was up again every 2 hours pushing Tottie to get better and making sure the puppies were getting fed.
-Tuesday morning I went to the Dr. to find I was negative for everything and had a "virus"!! Mind you I still felt like death and had coughed so much my chest felt like I was being stabbed every time I took a breath. I was given instructions to continue what I had been doing (alternate ibuprophen/acetaminophen and take Mucinex DM) they also added cough syrup and prednisone for the inflamation in my chest. So Tuesday was spent again, pushing Tottie to eat and drink which she was beginning to do better at and trying to get rest in between.
-Wednesday was finally a turning point for Tottie but not so much for me. I was still running a fever and my symptoms were not improving but thankfully, Tottie was slowly getting back to her happy self. We lost the second smallest puppy on Wed. but the rest seemed to be thriving. This was good news as I could finally get more than a couple of hours of rest at a time.
- Thursday my fever finally broke and I began feeling some better. Tottie began eating without having to be coaxed and all of the puppies have gained weight.
- Friday, 6 days in I feel like both Tottie and I are over the hump and on the right side of healing. I still have no energy but the fever is gone, the cough is getting better, and the "sick" feeling has subsided. Tottie is eating, drinking, and carrying for her puppies like a mommy pro!!
