Too cold for pups to exercise and play outside?
Mix up mealtime and make it fun.
Here’s 3 easy ways:
1. Toss each piece of kibble to your dog one at a time to play catch, or flick it from your hand for them to chase and find.
2. Put their food in an open, clean, dry, empty jug or water bottle to dispense the food as they toss the container around.
3. Lay a towel out flat. Pour some kibble down the middle longwise. Fold the towel in half at the kibble line. Spread more kibble all around. Roll the towel from one end so all the food is hidden in the towel roll. You may need to leave a few pieces of food sticking out to encourage your dog to explore. Make it harder by rolling the towel more tightly or add a few smaller kibble towel rolls inside.

Don’t forget about the dog…

When activity is not only overstimulating but continues for too long with no break, dogs can reach a breaking point and behave out of character.

Normally mellow dogs can growl, snap, or possibly bite because they are over threshold and don't know how to find their way out of difficulty.

Your gift to a dog enduring stress that has gone on for too long is a felt sense of relief. If it's possible, end the chaos and stop the noise. If not, rescue the dog from the sensory environment so that he or she can trust that you will always be there to relieve discomfort. Assure the dog that all is well and that it's safe to relax since relief is just what the dog wants to feel.

Did You Know?

A dogs sense of taste is much less developed than humans. Dogs have approximately one sixth the taste buds humans have which is why they are able to scarf rotting food just as quickly as their kibble or favorite treat.

Your dog's behavior is the expression of an emotion that is driven by an unmet need. When you listen to your dog with your eyes, ears, and intelligence you will see what to do to meet that need.

The environmental triggers aren't the WHY...they are the CIRCUMSTANCE that tells the dog he isn't safe. When your dog's fundamental need for felt safety is met, then you can help him reframe the circumstances so they aren't scary anymore.

Let me know if you need help.

Did you know:
If you have a pacemaker, you can put it in your Will to have your pacemaker donated to a dog in need after you pass. Pacemakers cannot be donated to another human (within the US), but they can be donated to dogs with cardiac issues who would depend on it to stay alive.
You can have the pacemaker brought to a vet of your choice. So many of those get thrown away and dogs die because people don't know they can do this. It even saves the dog's owner the cost of the actual pacemaker which sometimes means the difference in being able to afford lifesaving treatment or not. 🐕 ❤️

(It’s been pointed out that it may be better to put it in your organ donor registration)

To arrange a pacemaker donation, or for more information, contact cardiology veterinary technician Alyssa Ingerson at (573) 882-7821. To make a monetary gift, visit www.giving.missouri.edu, or mail checks, indicating Cardiology Department on the memo line, to:

Here’s a dog treat recipe for our friends and followers :

Well it is a cookie time for my fur babies. They love homemade treats.

I use 1 1/2 cups flour. 1 jar chicken meat baby food and about 2/3 cup peanut butter. If dough is too thick add a little water. If too thin add a little more flour. You want it the Consistency of cookie dough.Make sure there is no artificial sweetener in the peanut butter. Roll and cut out, bake at 350 for 10 minutes. I keep some out and freeze the others. Take out as needed.

IDEAS FOR GIVING PILLS TO DOGS
WHAT
Put the pill straight in:
• Hotdogs
• Sausages
• Beefburgers
• Marshmallows
• Cheese slices
• Cheese paste
• Pate
• Meat slices
• Chicken hearts
Put the pill in a slurry made with:
• Cat food
• Tripe
• Fish
• Peanut butter
• Molasses
• Liver
• Or anything strong tasting
SubThreshold Training 2018

Freeze-coat the pill
• Coat the pill in raw liver, fish, or trip gloop and freeze. If using capsules, cover in peanut flour or coconut flour.
• Coat in butter and freeze, or cream cheese. Then coat again before pilling.
HOW
• Make it a game: toss the coated pill, hide the coated pill
• Use coated pill as reward for quick fire training (touch, watch me, look at that etc)
• Do 1-2-3 punch:
• Eg for cheese coated pill do one piece of cheese, no pill.
• Don’t give the dog time to chew then quickly offer the 2nd piece WITH the pill.
• Then straight in with the third piece, no pill.
• Involve others dogs to make it competitive and urgent.
MIX-IT-UP
• Don’t give same food. Don’t use the same routine - mix up time, place (different room, outside, on walks), who, where the food comes from (sometimes freezer, fridge, cupboard etc).
• Keep mixing it up so that they can’t pick up clues.
