(sound on) Tis the season. If you haven't already, now is a good time to consider starting to desensitize your dog to loud, unexpected noises like fireworks and thunderstorms. This MUST be done gradually, though. Positive stress is good. Tolerable and toxic stress are less so.
Also, introducing Night, our new rescue. He's a (n unbelievably sweet) nervous boy but is continuing to get more confident step by step. For the eagle-eyed among you, 32 seconds in was when he noticed mom in the window.

Hi all. I want to take an opportunity to clear up a misconception. It is not normal for dogs to bark when they see people or dogs or cars, etc. It is common and getting even more common. But it isn't normal. Not for dogs of a certain size, not for dogs of a certain breed, and not in certain locations. What it is is a socialization deficit. It tells us that our dogs are overstimulated by, or often, afraid of what they're seeing. In either case, this can lead to severe behavioral issues that are best avoided. And the way to prevent (or address) these issues is to get our dogs well socialized and keep our dogs well socialized. So if you think your dog may have this problem, contact a trainer and socialize them. If you're not sure if your dog has this problem, socialize them. If you're sure your dog doesn't have this problem, GREAT! Socialize them anyway. If you're considering getting a dog, well, you can see where this is going. Proper socialization may be the single most important thing you can do to keep your dog safe and happy.
And lest anyone think they're being singled out here, you're not. No, not you either. There's a ton of this happening now and it's likely that we're going to see more.
