Scarlet Hiss ACCT-A-177930 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Scarlet must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4TH at 10AM. Should Scarlet's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Scarlet is one of ACCT's longest cat residents, and he came to us after his owner moved out, leaving him in the basement. Despite the best efforts from his friends at the shelter, Scarlet is not faring any better behaviorally than when he first arrived.
Behavioral memos:
10/12 Attempted check in, P has been here for several days with no behavior improvement. Lunging at hands, hissing, growling, stiff posture, dilated pupils, etc.
10/18 Will swat, hiss, and spit. Very dilated pupils. Very fearful.
11/21 Scarlet hissed at me when I initially knelt down by his kennel and continued to do so when I pulled back the sheet covering the kennel. He tried to swat at me through the bars and began growling when I tried to open the kennel door.
12/1 No Behavioral improvement, hissing, ears back, swatting, will scratch, terrified/fearful. Unable to do any handling whatsoever, difficult to provide care.
While it can be incredibly rewarding to watch a cat come out of their shell after periods of patient attempts to befriend, it's very disheartening to see a cat, week after week, for almost two months, remain so fearful and reactive. We don't think keeping Scarlet Hiss here any longer is the kindest thing for him.
We would love to see this guy take all the time he needs to decompress in a quiet home and learn about how he grew into the perfect lap cat. But we know it might not be that simple. We would love for someone to step up and take a chance on Scarlet, even if he decides he does not want to be a lap cat.

Sandman ACCT-A-207630 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Sandman must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5TH at 10AM. Should Sandman’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Sandman was brought to the shelter as a stray on November 21st. The finder was unable to contact the owner on his collar, so they brought him to the shelter for medical treatment. At first, he was a bit stressed and fractious, but he has since shown us how friendly he truly is! Sandman might have been through some sleepless nights on the streets, but with the right love he’ll be resting easy in no time. Sandman has been diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and hyperthyroidism which both require treatment. Though he’s a bit rough around the edges right now, with some care and attention, he’ll become the loving companion he’s meant to be. Due to his medical concerns, Sandman is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.
MEDICAL:
On 11/2, Sandman was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) and started on medication. His bloodwork revealed hyperthyroidism and mild hyperglobulinemia. He was prescribed methimazole for his hyperthyroidism and doxycycline for his URI. If adopted, Sandman should have a follow-up with an outside vet in 3-4 weeks for repeat bloodwork, or sooner if he is not doing well.
On 11/26, Sandman was noted to have abdominal effort and received a vet exam. He was very sweet, purring throughout the exam, but did not allow the vet to examine his mouth. His corneas were clouded, but there were no other concerns. Thoracic and abdominal x-rays were performed, which were unremarkable. His blood was drawn for a full panel of bloodwork.
During his intake exam on 11/23, Sandman’s ears were slightly dirty, he had heavy staining on his teeth and a bump on his gum, and he had a small spot of hair loss on his neck, but no fleas. He was bright, alert, responsive, and fractious.
During a triage exam on 11/21, Sandman was very vocal, and although initially friendly, he became moderately fractious shortly into the exam. His eyes had mild discharge and clouded lenses, and he was also underweight. He was prescribed gabapentin to help him settle and allow for further examination.
BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 12/2: Sandman is clearly not feeling well right now. He is very congested and when I pet him I could feel all the bones in his spine. He leaned his head into my hand for pets.
Per staff 11/25: Extremely friendly and loves pets. A very sweet gentleman!!
Per finder: Friendly, scared, aggressive.

Leander ACCT-A-208099 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Leander must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5TH at 10AM. Should Leander's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Leander was surrendered to ACCT when his owners suspected a urinary blockage, since he suffered one in the past. When our medical staff examined him, we found his bladder to be large and firm, and we were unable to express it.
Leander urgently needs to leave with a rescue that can provide the medical services beyond ACCT's capacity.
Leander will likely need to be unblocked and put on a prescription diet long-term. Some cats with urinary crystals do not require surgical intervention, or perineal urethrostomy (PU surgery) but the need for that cannot be ruled out at this time.
Medical notes:
11/30 Pt BAR. No abnormalities found on PE except for baseball sized bladder that is firm but not hard, unable to express.
Bloodwork and radiographs are available upon request.
We have seen Leander urinate in our care, but he is unable to fully express his bladder. In his kennel, he is incredibly affectionate, rolling around, rubbing against the kennel door, purring, and eating well. We are hopeful that his owners caught this at a crucial point, and that Leander can make a full recovery with proper medical management, avoiding the sometimes terribly sharp decline of a full urinary blockage.
