The Stages of Jumping

When I teach jumping I talk a lot about the different stages and what both horse and rider need to do to get a successful jump. Hopefully these photos of me and Pepper help make it super clear!

Approach- on the approach we are looking for an upwards bouncy canter with the horse and rider straight and looking at the jump. The horse should round his back to bring their back legs further underneath his body creating more impulsion ready for the jump. The rider should have a good contact, sitting up tall and keep the leg on until the takeoff (this does not mean kicking!)

Takeoff- ideally this will be on a good stride from the nice bouncy canter in the approach. Although this doesn’t always happen so the rider should be ready for the horse to chip in a short stride or take a long one and have the balance to go with the horse anyway and follow forwards with the hands. It is important the rider keeps riding with the horse to prevent the horse from stopping or running out. The horse pushes off with the front legs first then follows with the back legs.

Flight- at the point all the rider can do is stay balanced and look towards the next fence. Too much movement can affect how well the horse jumps and managed to get his legs out of the way. The horse will again curve their back and neck over the jump into the round bascule shape desired.

Landing- on the landing the horse absorbs the weight through the forelegs and shoulders. It is important at this point the rider brings their shoulders back and keeps their lower leg underneath the body in a secure position to try and keep themselves balanced and not put extra weight on the horse. This stable position also keeps you in a better balance to signal your intentions to the horse on landing.

Get away- As the horse’s hind feet touch the ground and he gets ready to take the first canter stride, return to your light-seat position – seat bones slightly out of the saddle, leaning slightly forwards. Be ready to drive the horse forwards with your legs and your seat ready for the next fence.

This is a condensed version of everything that happens over a jump (and it all happens so fast!) so it isn’t always perfect! If anyone has any question or needs a specific part explaining in more detail please feel free to ask!
