Good morning from Nate! He LOVES this fan!

Our post about Destiny and her owner's decision to put her to rest in order to guarantee that she would never know anything different than a good life has brought a lot of attention to this topic.

I have had messages asking my opinion and been given a few. I have to say that a few years ago, I could not find any understanding what so ever in this approach. But after seeing how the loss of an owner or a shift in health or life circumstances can change a horses life, I am open to the option.

I say this with a horse of age in mind, because too often an aged horse (20 plus) is considered old, useless, a pasture pet only. Not to say this would be an easy decision, but if an owner wants to guarantee that there horse will never go without the standards that they are accustom to, like proper feed and care, this is the only answer. Outside of preparing a trust and a sanctuary to take care of them, but this is not an option for everyone.

I field many callers searching for a safe landing for horses 25 plus years of age, that have known nothing but one owner their entire life. These calls break my heart. The circumstances are almost always due to their owners having a downward change in health conditions. It is not easy, but I feel like I owe it to them to discuss euthanization from the perspective of their horse. A good, happy, long life is something to appreciate, why end it with the stress of being uprooted and the unknown. Now this applies only if there is not a trusted option. I am in no way suggesting that all aged horses be euthanized. We LOVE old horses!

I absolutely hate talking about this topic, but if we do nothing else here at SRER, we put the horses first! So I felt like we should touch on this subject.
Don't throw eggs at me, but I think it is a good topic.

Once upon a time, there was a very kind lady who had become very ill. She knew that her life would be changing quickly and feared that her illness would take her life. Her love was an 18 year old Friesian that she had owned since she was a 2 year old. The greatest fear was something happening to her after she had passed. What if she ended up in the wrong hands? She has allergies, what if they are ignored? What if she is mistreated? What if she ended up in Mexico? These worries had taken over her heart. Even though it broke her heart, she decided that the only way to insure that Destiny would never be at risk of these things would be to have her euthanized. It was the unthinkable, yet the only answer.

On the day that the vet was to lay her down, Destiny’s owner was in the hospital. My husband Kevin was made aware of the situation and he immediately called the owner and asked if she would allow us to help. She began to cry from the heart, Yes! Yes, please! She was crying happy tears! She was sure that the phone call was to let her know that her girl had been lied down to rest.
Destiny’s mom and I have come to be friends and speak often. She is still battling for her life, so I ask you to pray for her.

We have a new SRER member! How she came to find us is a heartbreaking and also a heartwarming story. Her name is Destiny and she is 18 years old.
I’m not sure if I’ll write her story down or do a live?🤔
But for now…. Here’s a picture 😉

Still not over it and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same. I know I won’t.

I have been contacted by a gentleman that needs to rehome his 4-year-old mustang gelding, due to personal reasons (nothing due to the gelding). He has been gentled and started, although will need a home that is experienced. The situation is somewhat urgent.

Contact me via PM and I will connect you.
Thank you-
