As the first LIMA based Behaviour Specialists & Psychologists in Singapore, we believe all dogs should be given the chance to learn in a safe and comfortable environment. By exercising a unique approach towards teaching dogs (Connection Building & SECRAT), our aim is to open up a new world of canine behaviours and training to owners, trainers and behaviourists. This is a model created by Jeryl, ou

Established in 2012, the team created the first owner focused program and Stay & Train course in Singapore. Courses were designed based on over 17 years of experience in dog handling. We use only science based principals to work with dogs and aims to guide owners to teach their dogs with love. Dog Trainer | Amber’s Cottage | Behaviour Modification

The recent surge of incidents once again shows that even in today’s world where we treat our pets more like our children than just animals, crates and leash are still relevant in keeping dogs safe.

In the last decade together with the rise of positive based training, the word cage free has been used for marketing so often that it has now turned into something that some owners specifically look out for when searching for pet service providers. The rise of positive reinforcement has done good to the welfare of dogs, but it is also a double edged sword. The idea that dogs should be free and live as naturally as possible derives from the idea that nature is the best for a dog’s minds and body. We have more owners wanting their dogs to be off leashed than before, to roam freely, be on raw, self medicate, to interact with their counterparts, sometimes other animals as much as possible. Yet what most do not see is the fact remains that while nature is beautiful, it can also be unforgiving. Nature cannot be controlled and death is the consequence for mistakes.

Crates and leash in fact, are one of the simplest way to keep dogs safe, with each having their individual purposes. Call it cage, playpen or rooms, as long as they are puppy proofed, the dog would have no access to dangerous situations which may endanger their life unnecessarily. In a cage free environment, the life of an animal would often have to depend on its survival skills and luck. Dog attacks resulting in deaths are not uncommon either. Even food crumbs left on the ground can potentially end up endangering their lives when ingested. Leash, collar, harnesses, they are not just meant to keep your dog away from disturbing the public, they can also be used to keep them safe from the road, other animals and dangerous objects. You can easily find articles about related accidents everywhere around the world. Unfortunately news like these are easily forgotten once people are bored and starts looking for the next sensational story.

While having said that, there’s a difference between using tools as punishment versus conditioning a dog to be comfortable with it first. The general public tends to misunderstand the concept of crate and leash training, thinking that they can only choose one method or another. There are so many ways to teach dogs and with some effort and patience, one doesn’t always have to make their dogs miserable to reach a goal. Same for leash, people are often stuck in the mindset that because their dogs prefer to be free, it’s much more ethical to put them off it. This sometimes drives the pro electric collar users into selling the idea that if we can train dogs to be off leashed as fast as possible, it benefits them as they can enjoy freedom in public after training.

Today, I received some questions from a dog owner regarding the recent dog bite incident, to understand if it could’ve been trained and the options to help their dogs with similar behaviours. As I’m in this industry, most people may expect me to try selling them a fix. The truth is, most dogs cannot be trained to stop a behaviour completely, this includes aggression. Many owners have been misled into the idea that bad behaviour = bad owners, that if a dog hurts someone, it was due to the lack of training. This aggressive way of marketing dog training has been imbedded into our minds unconsciously, making us think that engaging a trainer can stop aggressive behaviours from developing and occurring altogether. This is not how a dog brain works, aggression is not a problem in the animal world, it is a way to help them survive. It may not be obvious, but aggression is also a part of our nature as humans. Shouting at someone, being angry at them, that is aggression.

Aggression is not always physical, in fact it always starts internally. From thinking and feeling which leads to behaving. What we can do is not expect dogs to not show any emotions. I know people who punish their dogs for being frustrated, afraid, excited. That is just plain cruel and this is not education. I prefer to teach that there is no need to always use physical aggression within a specific scenario. They can be angry, they can be frustrated, they can be afraid, but it doesn’t always need to be physical. We can prevent and we can modify a behaviour, but we should not be trying to alter genetics passed down for tens of thousands of years. Regardless of whether it is through positive or negative reinforcement, unless we are talking about breeding, it is extremely misleading to say we can train off genetically motivated behaviour. You can train alternate behaviour, you can maximize learning ability, you can reduce a said behaviour, but not train it off.

There are tons things to learn about dogs than just dog training, often these information cannot be found within the circle itself, we have to look much further, put down ego and be open to absorbing information.

Bo used to be over excited whenever he sees dogs due to past routine. This is one of the many times i met dog owners wanting to let their dogs approach, and what i’d normally do is to avoid unnecessary doubts by explaining that my dog is the one that isnt suitable.

At the same time, not over reacting to the dog with me will help them calm down much faster.

Howie’s butt was itchy and he doesn’t like it when someone touches him while he is unhappy. But with some conditioning and good relationship established, we can turn it into something meaningful.

Evaluating Hunter’s barking behaviour. He barks at everything he’s not familiar with, especially those that makes loud noise and approach his environment directly.

From a glance it may seem like just territorial behaviour, but I’ve observed that it is much more than that. My priority when working with dogs is to always perform an accurate diagnosis instead of guessing. At this point it requires more observation and test.

A wrong or bad evaluation can affect the dog’s life, especially when we are often the last option for dog owners.

Howie is back for revision work before flying to his new home. Over the past 1.5 years, he’s come a long way.

When we first met him, he had a number of severe aggression, ranging from resource, touch, wearing of collar to sound and dog reactivity. Having gone through multiple trainers with bites still unpredictable, it was hard to even imagine back then that he could be learning bonus skills today.

Now that there’s been zero bite incidents at home for months, we are teaching him to stay in his crate for his flight, as well as help him react to dogs better so that he can be safer in an environment where large dogs are more common.

Here’s a picture of Howie drooling while waiting too long for a treat.

Hunter is here to work on a range of issues. He is extremely loud for his size, territorial and vocal. Once it starts he is not able to control himself and it can go on for hours, often through the day.

Hunter is also reactive during walks, barking at dogs and passerby. He is also observed to be sensitive and fearful. Having gone through punitive tools, it only works for a moment and he gets desensitized towards them and revert to barking within a short period.

My goal is to help Hunter and his family get along better. As someone who has the hands on experience and knowledge with different methodologies, I do not judge on the methods or tools used, rather I prefer to listen, understand and aim towards maximizing the effectiveness of a dog’s learning ability.

Pictures taken during our volunteer visit to the shelter at Capetown, the goal was to assess and provide guidance to improve rehabilitation for the severe cases there.

The issues they had that could have prevented them from being adopted/given away were not far off from what we are facing in Singapore. It’s not like there were more aggression cases with pitbulls or larger breeds, in fact most of them had high energy, anxiety and facing problems with too much stimulus. These are often observed to be human conditioned rather than genetics.

Fortunately, the lead volunteers there were very attentive and happy to listen to my advice.

Haki, Tobi & Loki

They are living in the same household, but born from different parents. Understandably, they didn’t get along very well in the beginning. One is the elder and is used to getting all the attention, the other loves the elder dog but doesn’t get enough love back, the last is one that is vocal and demands all attention to him.

Contrary to popular beliefs, dogs generally do not get along well with each other especially if they are born from different parents. The idea of pack relationship is not applicable to those who are bred and raised in a household environment. Pack behaviour studies, often deriving from stray and wild dogs is often exaggerated to the point that we should train our dogs to love all others. Unfortunately, forcing them to get along without trying to understand their needs usually end up in unnecessary stress in the family, sometimes resulting in fights and injuries.

In multi dogs household, the key is to understand the needs of individual dog rather than the human wants and beliefs. Once the needs are fulfilled with a good relationship established, most dogs will start to feel more comfortable and safer, which then we can speak about fitting the human need.

As always, my advice is always to put your dogs first, your needs last and you’ll start see the difference.

Was invited in South Africa to assess and improve the rehabilitation of the 2 most severe cases here.

Will share more when we are back.
