Welcome to Flora Fibres yarn shop! We specialise in hand spun yarns, created from natural fibres and all 100% animal free.

All of our products are suitable for vegans, those with allergies to wool, and anyone looking to try something a little different in their crafting! All the yarns are spun by hand in Fife, Scotland, and are either left undyed for you to finish as you wish for your own project, or they are dyed using completely natural dyes. We take great pride in the quality of our yarns, and each is made with a g

reat deal of love and attention to detail, to give you the best possible yarn. As with all handmade goods each hank is unique, so you will find each comes with details of the fibres, skein weight, approximate length and yarn weight. Some slight variation in thickness is to be expected in handspun yarn, and this will give your finished items a lovely character.

No post show rest day for me now that I'm a busy handy lady, instead I've been tiling a kitchen! Which is a roundabout way of saying it'll be a few days before I have time to do a stock check and reopen my Etsy shop 🙂

So... I have some news 😅 The reason I've been so quiet recently is that I've been at trade school on a plumbing course! Probably not the announcement you were expecting me to make 😂 Don't worry though, I'll still be doing yarny stuff on the side, but as of next week I'm going to be a handy lady 🛠️🪠 That means I'll be cutting down on the number of shows I'll be doing, but you'll still see me around occasionally, starting with !

Today I had the pleasure of teaching my first "proper" dyeing workshop at my local guild (I say proper as I've done one with a friend before which was much less formal and structured)

It was a great success and everyone had a lot of fun dyeing their Tencel yarn into a multitude of different shades. I only told everyone at the end that it was my first workshop and they were quite surprised by the news, so hopefully that means I did a good job of teaching 😅

It's given me the confidence to think that I should look into hosting more natural dyeing workshops in the future. Would you be interested in attending if I do??

Here's a little behind the scenes/real life snapshot of the realities of running a small business. It's just taken me nearly an hour, in the pouring rain, to get today's orders posted. Between our local post office closing, the one in the next village being closed today (which I found out after driving there), then roadworks on my journey to double back on myself and head the other direction to the next nearest post office. So that was lots of fun...

Now to dry off and get on with preparing for my first proper dyeing workshop this weekend at the East Central Scotland Guild of Spinners Weavers and Dyers 🙂

Time for a little Friday afternoon car knitting while my boys are at their tennis lessons! And yes, despite the fact I sell stitch markers at yarn festivals I am using 2 small pieces of scrap yarn as a stitch marker for my own knitting. It's not because I don't have any of my own, they're just never around when I need one! 😅

I'm knitting with my gorgeously soft and squishy single ply Pima cotton. Honestly I wish I could somehow let you all feel how lovely this yarn is, it's so very 😍 This will just be a wee cowl/tube as it's for a show sample, but I'll have a little left over afterwards for an idea I want to try out...

After a couple of days off to recover from all the business and excitement of The Glasgow School of Yarn I'm happy to say that my Etsy shop is open again 🥳

Now that I've had a chance to reflect on the weekend and gather my thoughts I can honestly say that it was one of the best festivals I've been to this year. A beautiful venue, well organised, and lots of happy, smiling faces made it truly wonderful weekend. Thank you Antje for having us! 💖

The remainder of the new yarns which were dyed for the show but have come home with me will be added to the shop tomorrow.

I also have a question for you which I could really do with some feedback on: I have some "last of their batch" yarns in various colours. Would you rather see them made up as 3 or 4 packs at a discounted price, or be able to choose individual yarns from the sale? Comment below and let me know your preference, the option with the most votes is what I'll go for!

A bowl full of embroidery thread seems to be a good way to draw in the crowds at The Glasgow School of Yarn , I think it's because they're a perfect combination of small, cute and shiny 😜

It's the school holidays here so I took a few days off from show prep for The Glasgow School of Yarn for a long weekend up in Nairn (don't worry, I got all my dyeing done last week!) Typically the weather on the last day was by far the best, but we had a lovely trip, admired all the beautiful autumn colours of the Highlands, and did a little autumnal foraging too. We've collected rose hips, acorns, apples, wood sorrel and a big bag of conkers as I'm curious to try the chestnut soap I've been seeing everywhere! We also found a sweet chestnut tree but the nuts weren't good sadly, and the beech nuts beside it were also passed so we left those for the squirrels. I do like October 😍

The results of my little dye experiment the other day, now that it's all dry. What do we think: yay or nay? So it's a base of peachy pink, with purple blobs (like speckles much bigger sister 😅) randomly throughout. I think I like it, but it's also completely different to what I normally do. Tell me what you think, should I do more like this?!

The weather is rotten and I've just spent the morning lugging boxes back up to our newly floored attic (love it though! So much better than balancing on the joists 😅) so it's time to sneak off for a few rows before lunch! This is going to be the show sample of my falling leaves scarf in DK Tencel (available from my Ravelry shop), so hopefully it'll be off my needles and blocked in time for The Glasgow School of Yarn 🙂

I'm taking full advantage of the last day of term to try and squeeze in as much dyeing as I can for The Glasgow School of Yarn in 2 weeks, but I thought I'd try a wee experiment while I'm at it! And no, the experiment isn't "try to make the yarn look like a delicious pudding" 🤣

I quite enjoy being that weirdo in the supermarket that's diving into the onion bins for loose skins, even if it does get me some odd looks 😂 I like to add them to my pots of weld to give me slightly different shades of yellow (white onion skins) or green (red onion skins, in combination with indigo). Plus it tidies up their display for them!

Good morning my lovelies! How are you all this fine October morning? I've got workmen banging about flooring my attic today which is very exciting, if a little noisy. And so I'm hiding in the living room and catching up on some admin, including applying for some yarn festivals for next year. And I've just beaten my personal record on "time to get accepted to a show", getting a reply only 27 minutes after submitting my application 😂😍

I've still not made much progress on the shop update with my boys off school due to the strike, but today I did manage something useful and moved the light in my upper landing (it was at the unpainted brown circle) and added in a second light too as it was always too dark upstairs. The worst part of the whole job was the house alarm going off the entire time the lighting circuit was off as apparently they're on the same circuit... sorry neighbours! 😅

Good morning my lovelies! What a fabulous weekend we had at Yarndale 😍 Thank you to all you lovely people who stopped by, whether just for a quick chat, to buy yarn, or because you were distracted by the shiny 😜 It was great to see you all!

Also just to add that I managed to get my stock check done yesterday so the Etsy shop is open again, however as my kids primary school is on strike for the next 3 days I'm not sure when I'm going to get a chance to get the new yarn photographed and added. The good news though is that as it's the janitorial and catering staff that are striking, that means I don't need to do any cleaning or cooking today, right?? 😅

I'm so proud of this wall of gorgeous yarny loveliness. Although it does just make me want to KNIT ALL OF THE THINGS! 😂

My black (ish) embroidery thread is all dry now and does actually look fairly black. It has a little bit of a blue tone to it, but I think it could pass for black for most purposes! The closest I've ever got to getting black using natural dyes! This batch of embroidery threads have been in every dye pot for the last 2 days, including indigo, logwood, madder, weld, walnut and iron. I love dyeing yarn using a natural indigo vat. The way the colour only develops once it has come in contact with the oxygen in the air is just like magic 🌿🪄
