It’s time to introduce another Nat McCall Racing retiree into the program. Perseides (Percy) has been enjoying a lovely let down period here on the farm 🌾 thanks to his owners and the stable.

Percy is a lightly raced, 6 year old Star Witness gelding who won over 160k prize money in just 21 starts 👏🏼

Percy has now entered the Queensland Off The Track program and will continue to work on his rapidly acquired ‘dad bod’ 🫣 for another few weeks before we commence his life after racing.

We can’t wait to work with Percy, he’s a lovely in your face type of horse who is just waiting to be someone’s best mate ♥️

Already a Star 🌟 update

Rain is continuing to spell after enduring a very nasty hoof infection over the past few months 🤒

We are thrilled things are well and truly on the way up! Thanks to our farrier and vet, Rain is back to cantering across the paddock. And the BEST news is he has some lovely clean X-rays and will have no lasting impacts.

We will complete another full shoeing cycle 👞 and reassess his readiness to commence retraining.

Until then, he continues to let down, fill out and lap up the loving ♥️ One tough 🍪 Rainy boy!

Our little doll Angel had her 3rd ride in her off the track journey today.

Plenty of baby moments, she’s still working out what this circle business is all about. Angel only had two very short race preps with one 400m jump out, so even in racing terms she’s very green.

My job isn’t to overload her with a lot of busyness, just a fuss free little walk and trot out on the big arena. We are starting to work on establishing some go, trying to find a little rhythm, and following her nose.

It doesn’t have to be pretty yet, just a fuss free walk, trot and canter and developing our responses to aids.

She’s such a lovely little student, we will continue to post her progress over the next 6 weeks ⭐️

Queensland Off The Track

Ever wondered how we progress our OTTs initial education? We ALWAYS start our horses with solid ground work sessions 👟.

We work to instill some basic responses. Forward, back up, move the shoulders, move the hindquarters, the end goal is all movements completed on light aids 🚦.

We also teach the horses to lunge. The goal isn’t to strap them around in circles 100 miles an hour but to install basic walk, trot and canter aids and allow them to find their balance without a rider on their back. It also allows me to observe the horses in all gaits, seeing how they react to aids under very light pressure.

Some horses progress faster than others, there’s no right or wrong, just progress and an understanding of what we are asking them to do.

IT TAKES THE TIME IT TAKES.

Hot tips 🤫
1 - a rope halter is your best friend!
2 - saddle your horse even when we are working them on the ground. Having a saddle and bridle on your OTT and doing groundwork is a great way to progress their thinking past racing!
3 - there’s really never a time you don’t need groundwork. Sometimes it’s 30 mins and others it’s 2 mins, it’s ALWAYS where we start.

Introducing the baby of the team, Oh Yeah Baby (Angel 😇). We’ve been spoilt with this little 3 year old unraced filly from Nat McCall Racing.

Originally offered straight off the track, we didn’t find the perfect home. Angel’s owners have allowed her to enjoy a 4 month spell and she will now commence the Queensland Off The Track program.

Day 1 of school 🏫 today and an initial groundwork session turned into her first ride out on the big arena. She’s THAT good 🌟!!!

One to follow, this little lady will suit a wide variety of homes and potentially a capable teen looking for their first off the tracker 🏇

Very wise words! No single horse has taught me more than my thoroughbreds!

"A Thoroughbred is a horseman's horse. They can be reactive and sensitive. They require consistency and patience. They will make you painfully aware of your shortcomings.

A Thoroughbred will also make you realise your strengths. When properly prepared, they will outrun and out-try all the competition.
They will give you every ounce of their big hearts.

So, if your horse is spooky, skinny, flighty or crazy, it's not because your horse is a Thoroughbred. It is simply your Thoroughbred calling upon you to become a better horseman - the horseman he needs you to be."

💡 QOTT Acknowledged Retrainer Know-How.

One of our newest QOTT Acknowledged Retrainers, Sandi Sevior from Flynn Equine Solutions, has some great words of wisdom 🦉 to share with OTT owners...

"Every interaction is a chance to educate. We are educating our horses from the moment we step foot in their paddock to the moment we turn them out again. We don’t want to start a training session 20 minutes after we have brushed and tacked up, and then try to change the goal posts. Ensure you are displaying clear aids and watching for responses while leading your horse up from the paddock, tying up and grooming. All of these interactions are a chance to improve our groundwork and ultimately, our connection under saddle." ❤️

Such good advice to remind us to be aware of how much we can positively influence our horse's behaviour by being gentle, observant and consistent. Thanks Sandi! 👏

Unraced but prepped, Angel suffered a suspensory strain and is not suitable for the rigors of racing. Her owner is willing to continue her rehab (3 spell required) and offer her to a wonderful home once completed.

Angel is eligible for the QOTT subsidised lessons and welcome pack.

Angel is offered as a blank canvas. 5 ⭐️ homes only need apply, Angel will be offered under our rehoming contract to an approved home only.

Assess and reassess 🕵️‍♀️

Today, Gus’s groundwork had progressed to a point I was happy to give him his first ride off the track 🦄.

We started the session with some ground work, checking his focus was with me and he was responding to light aids 🪄.

We moved to a nice session at the mounting block where I mounted and started some basic exercises at walk. Gussy was doing everything right but his responses had slightly regressed and he was just a bit ‘sticky’ and slow to move off my aids.

After a quick reassessment, I dismounted and focused on another 5 mins of groundwork. After mounting again the ‘stickiness’ had eased, giving me a much better feel 🤎.

It’s always nice to have a plan for the session. What’s more important, is adapting to what energy your horse is giving you. Take the time, training horses is never linear 📈 🏇
