The Use and Benefits of a Carpal Brace for a St. Bernard
⬇️💜⬇️💜

Tendinopathy is a common condition in large breed dogs like St. Bernards. This condition affects the tendons, leading to pain, inflammation, and limited mobility. For a St. Bernard, whose size and weight can exacerbate joint issues, managing this condition effectively is crucial.

The Role of a Carpal Brace
🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾
A carpal brace is designed to provide support and stability to a dog's wrist joint (carpus), which can be particularly beneficial for a St. Bernard suffering from ligament tendinopathy. Here's how a carpal brace can help:

Support and Stability: The brace helps to stabilize the carpal joint, reducing strain on the tendons and ligaments. This support is essential for a large dog like a St. Bernard, as their weight can put significant pressure on their joints.

Pain Relief: By minimizing movement and providing support, a carpal brace can help alleviate pain. This allows your St. Bernard to move more comfortably and engage in their usual activities with less discomfort.

Improved Healing: Limiting movement through bracing can promote better healing of the affected tendons and ligaments. By keeping the carpal joint stable, the brace allows for reduced inflammation and more effective recovery.

Preventing Further Injury: A carpal brace can prevent further injury by restricting excessive or abnormal movements that could aggravate the condition. This is especially important for active or large dogs that may inadvertently worsen their injury through normal activities.

Enhanced Mobility: With the pain relief and support provided by the brace, your St. Bernard can enjoy better mobility. They can walk, play, and exercise with greater ease, contributing to their overall well-being.

⭐ Always consult with your veterinarian or veterinary physiotherapist to ensure you select the best brace for your dog's specific needs and to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to their condition.

If your dog could set some New Year's Resolutions, what do you think they would be?

We think many of them would revolve around you - their human.

YOU are your dog's world so spending time with you is what makes them happy. It also keeps them distracted from any pain they might be in.

Boredom is really bad for the perception of pain. People living with chronic pain conditions like arthritis are encouraged to get a hobby to prevent boredom, keep their mind off their pain state and stimulate the release of happy hormones which can temporarily dampen pain signals.

So make sure to set aside some quality time for them each day - this could be a walk, playing some games, learning a trick, or even just some one-on-one cuddle time.

Or if you know you've got a busy schedule, look at enrichment toys such as puzzle feeders which can help keep your dog occupied while you take on the day ahead!

Wishing you and your fur family a wonderful 2024!

🎉🐾 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐰𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! 🐾🎉

As we prepare to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, it's important to consider our furry friends and ensure they have a safe and stress-free New Year's celebration. Here are some tips for animal care during this festive time:

𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧:
Set up a quiet and comfortable space for your pets to retreat to during the festivities. Loud noises from fireworks and celebrations can be stressful for animals, so a cosy spot with their favourite toys and blankets will help them feel secure.

𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲:
Ensure that your pets have proper identification, including an up-to-date collar with an ID tag and a microchip. The loud noises and increased activity during New Year's celebrations may cause anxiety, and having proper identification can aid in their safe return if they happen to escape.

𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Be mindful of decorations, especially those that may be harmful to animals. Tinsel, confetti, and certain plants can pose a risk if ingested. Keep decorations out of reach and be cautious with noise-makers that might frighten your pets.

𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬:
Many of the foods and drinks we enjoy during New Year's celebrations can be harmful to pets. Keep an eye on alcohol, chocolate, grapes, and other foods that are toxic to animals. Provide pet-friendly treats to indulge them in the celebration without any harm.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬:
If fireworks are common in your area, prepare for the noise by creating a calming environment. Close curtains or blinds, turn on the TV or soothing music, and consider using white noise to mask the sound of fireworks.

Wishing everyone a wonderful celebration and a Happy New Year!

HYDROTHERAPY, MUSCLE STRENGTH &
ELBOW RANGE OF MOTION....

Hydrotherapy plays a crucial role in the post-operative rehabilitation of canine patients undergoing elbow surgery. The buoyancy and resistance of water create a unique environment that promotes muscle strength and facilitates elbow range of motion.

Hydrotherapy and Muscle Strength:
Hydrotherapy provides a low-impact, supportive medium for dogs to exercise post elbow surgery. The water's buoyancy reduces weight-bearing stress on the joints, allowing controlled movement without excessive strain. This is particularly beneficial for rebuilding muscle strength without imposing undue pressure on the healing elbow joint.

Elbow Range of Motion:
Maintaining and improving elbow range of motion is vital in the rehabilitation process. Hydrotherapy's unique properties play a key role in achieving this:

Hydrotherapy enhances blood flow, promoting muscle flexibility and joint mobility. This helps prevent stiffness and encourages a wider range of motion in the elbow joint.

Resistance for Controlled Movement: The resistance provided by water promotes controlled and purposeful movement. This is particularly important in regaining and maintaining the appropriate range of motion in the elbow without causing strain or risking injury during the recovery period.

Benefits of Improved Muscle Strength and Elbow Range of Motion:
Faster Recovery: Hydrotherapy accelerates the rebuilding of muscle strength, aiding in a quicker recovery process post elbow surgery...

Laser therapy and snake bites.....

Laser therapy is an adjunct therapy in the treatment protocol for snake bites and is gaining attention for its significant benefits.

The use of photobiomodulation or laser therapy promotes tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and alleviates pain associated with snake bites. This approach aims to accelerate healing and minimize complications.

The importance of laser therapy lies in its ability to stimulate cellular activity, enhancing the natural healing process. By promoting circulation and reducing inflammation, laser therapy can contribute to faster tissue regeneration, which is crucial in addressing the local effects of snake venom.

In conjunction with laser therapy, physiotherapy modalities such as cryotherapy and massage play significant roles. Cryotherapy, or the application of cold therapy, helps manage swelling and pain by constricting blood vessels. This complements the anti-inflammatory effects of laser therapy, collectively aiding in the reduction of oedema and promoting a more favorable healing environment.

Massage, when carefully administered, can further enhance blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. This assists in toxin removal and facilitates the delivery of nutrients to the affected area.

In summary, the combination of laser therapy, cryotherapy, and massage in snake bite treatment addresses various aspects of healing – from cellular repair to symptom management. This integrative approach aims to optimize recovery, reduce complications, and improve the overall efficacy of rehabilitation following a snake bite.

It's all about quality of life!!!!

It’s time to ditch the cone of shame and explore alternatives. Our furry friends deserve better! A recent online survey study done by the Sydney School of Veterinary Science showed an alarming decrease in quality of life for both pets and their owners when using the Elizabethan collar. The study stated, “We found that the majority of the 434 participants (77.4%) reported a poorer quality of life in their companion animals while the collar was worn, based on effects in a range of welfare domains including nutrition, environment, health, behavior and mental state.”

That's unacceptable to us!

As caregivers, we have a responsibility to provide compassionate care for our pets, even during the painful post-op period. There are plenty of other products we can use instead of the cone. Be sure to check out our full blog through this link to explore the alternatives: https://www.dogleggs.com/blog/ditch-the-cone-the-antishame-campaign/

It’s not just Dachshund’s that can suffer from IVDD(intervertebral disc disease). Any breed can sustain injury to their spinal cord. Sometimes it can be very obvious and they become paralyzed but others may suffer silently and only show minimal symptoms that can easily be missed by most. The owner for the Toller pictured only noticed a small gait change but was diligent in knowing something was wrong. She had to see several veterinarians before seeing a neurologist who preformed a CT scan and found several chronic lumbar disc herniations. He was started on pain medications, started physical therapy twice a week and wears a Wiggleless Back Brace for part of the day, everyday. This may seem like a lot, but it sure is better than loosing his ability to walk and urinate on his own.

Hydrotherapy heals...

🐾 This senior pup faced his pelvic fracture repair surgery with such courage.
He met each day of his recovery in hospital with a quiet & dignified demeanour.

We used hydrotherapy as part of his ppst-op rehabilitation. Despite the difficulties hydrotherapy became his ally, a gentle force in the healing process.

Here's to the resilient spirit and the serenity found in every poolside pause. 💙

The shoulder is a weight-bearing joint, which means that it has to support the entire weight of the body when your dog moves. It's also a very mobile joint, allowing movement in a wide range of directions. This combination of weight-bearing and mobility makes the shoulder one of the most difficult joints to support and/or immobilize in the veterinary patient.

The DogLeggs® VEST for Shoulder Stabilization provides the perfect solution. It consists of a vest with sleeves that extend the length of the forelimbs. Padding can be strategically incorporated within the vest to provide additional support and/or compression to the shoulder. The DogLeggs® VEST for Shoulder Stabilization is an innovative way to help your dog recover from surgery or injury, and we are proud to be a part of your dog’s recovery journey!
