With spring just around the corner and with the temperatures becoming warmer, those who have rugged their horses over the winter will need to consider the differing range of temperatures that the spring months can bring.

Checking the weather forecast regularly will give you a rough indication of what temperatures and weather lies ahead and just remember that the temperatures at 6am can be a lot different to the temperature at midday, so if you are feeling cold when at the yard before work, this may not be the case for the rest of the day! Consider changing weights of rug for day vs night, or even removing rugs completely during the day.

Just remember, the ambient temperature range in which a healthy unclipped adult horse can easily maintain their body temperature is between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius, which is a lot wider than humans!

Front right and left hind, I’ll start with the right front, She has a fairly severe lateral rotation resulting in lateral landing and medial loading. She has a medial spiral lift shoe to help with the imbalance as trimming alone is not enough. She is shod every 4 weeks which keeps her sound and able to event.

She adducts the left hind, the lateral extension helps and she has been able to build up some good muscle. Poor muscle will accentuate it.

The older horse these worn shoes were from has arthritic changes in it knees. Along with having a lateral rotation from both knees.
I always make sure to reciprocate the shoe wear to keep him comfortable.

This little horse has a medial angulation from the fetlock.
While trying to manage the lateral length from the solar surface and medial flare from the dorsomedial plane, I grind down the lateral part of the shoe to keep this horse landing and loading level.

Been working with the physiotherapist on this one, he adducts both hind limbs and loads up the lateral part of the limb, more so on the right.
He also has negative rotation of the pedal bone in all four feet.
I went for lateral extensions on both hind shoes, and he moved off much straighter with much less hock movement and lateral loading.
I don’t always use bar shoes for this horse but I do alter his shoeing plan to suit his needs.

Suspensory desmitis on medial branch (injury over 10 years old) resulted in severe scar tissue damage which can be aggravated when worked on soft going. This shoe has helped the ‘oldish’ boy stay sound and comfortable for a while now. While I was at it he had a set of handmade shoes 👟
