in 2013 Stasya Briggs and Mike Heiner bought and rebuilt a beautiful bed and breakfast in Barra de Potosi, Gro, Mexico, - Hacienda la Rusa and a few months later Stasya witnessed stray dogs dying from poison. Village after village , Stasya went to talk to people and authorities and promised she would take care of the problem a humane way . She started to catch dogs and cats and drive them every d

ay to the SPAZ and local vet to spay or neuter. This is how an animal welfare project Amigos de Animales has started . Hard work of the founder and the group of amazing volunteers have resulted in numerous Mass Spay and Neuter clinics , 7000 + animals sterilized and hundreds rescued , fostered and adopted. what Amigos de Animales do :

* we pick up dogs & cats, take them to a local vet , pay for sterilization, return them back home or street

* we organize and pay for low cost or free mass spay and neuter programs and clinic

* we rescue, foster, treat, feed and vaccinate stray, hurt, abandoned animals

* we take animals we cant save to be euthanized and we stand by their side, providing last comfort

* we look for ways to transport animals up north where they have better chances to find a loving home

Hi! My name is Liborio, but my friends call me Libo.

I love humans and am super affectionate. Sometimes it takes a little while to build trust - but once I trust you, you've got a bestie for life! Being a true Hot Dog Connoisseur, special treats are the way to my heart 😋

The volunteers say I’m the perfect long dog on short legs 😌 They like how I wrap my whole body around them and boop them with my nose when asking for attention. My ideal home would be somewhere with nice people who are happy to work with me through my nervous moments and enjoy cuddles and quality time.

I like the other dogs I live with and wouldn’t mind some four-legged siblings in my future home. If I sound like the guy for you, please fill out an application form!

Hey friend, I’m Laura, it’s so nice to meet you! I arrived at Amigos with my babies when we were abandoned after I gave birth, but my pups are grown up and raising themselves, so I figure it’s time for me to look for a place to settle down and call home.

I’m a couple of years old now so no longer a puppy but still young at heart! If I had to describe myself in three words I’d say I’m affectionate, energetic and sweet. I guess I’m cheating here a bit because these are the words I hear the volunteers use when they talk about me 😇

I’m still pretty playful and am just learning how fun those tennis ball things are - woah what a rush chasing one of them!

Anyway, if you’re looking for a fun, loving gal to join you on this adventure we call life, maybe fill in an adoption application and I’ll see you soon!

Hi there, my name is Andrea! I came to Amigos as a little puppy and have been lucky enough to live here ever since!

I’m an energetic gal and nothing makes me happier than a long walk or run exploring the outside world. I get a bit excited when it’s time to go out and know I need to work on not pulling the humans out the door when it’s time to take them for a walk.

Sometimes I get a little nervous when it comes to new places or meeting new people on our walks. But don’t worry, my volunteer pals here have been working on my leash manners and confidence and I’m a quick learner - if I may say so myself 😉

While I can put on the independent act at first, really I want nothing more than to be close to my people and love a good cuddle once I’m comfortable.

I get along well with other dogs (I’ve always had to share my space here at the shelter!) that being said, I’d prefer to be your top gal and might do better in a house with male dogs or as your only canine companion.

But enough about me, I to find a permanent or foster home by mid-September so for more information please get in contact with Amigos!

Hola! My name is Isidro. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve been living at Amigos for a few years now. I’m a little older than some of my housemates here and sometimes find them a bit immature, so I think I’m ready to move in somewhere I can settle in and call home for the rest of my years.

The volunteers at Amigos let me hang out in the house because I’m so well-behaved, and really I just like a cool place to have a lie down after a long day with the young’uns.

I do like an extra snack if there’s one on offer (I mean, who doesn’t?!) but don’t be fooled, while I’m a bit of a larger gentleman, I still love a good walk or run, especially if it’s at the beach where I can dig for treasure or have a splash in the waves! That’s actually my happy place - surely you can relate?

If you’ve read this far, maybe you’re also looking for someone new to spend time with. Could it be me?

I’m a sweet lady who loves cuddles and human attention. All you have to do is say my name to get my tail wagging. I don’t always love other dogs, but humans, cats, and even chickens are all my besties!

Catalina | 3 years old
My perfect home? Well, I think that’d be with anyone not looking for a super active dog, but a sweet and snuggly companion to enjoy the simple things in life, like a cup of tea on the couch and maybe watching a nice rom-com together!

Melissa | 2 years old
I’m a sweet girl who loves to do silly zoomies. Once I know and trust someone I love cuddles and attention. With patience and love, I'm sure I'll be your best friend in no time!

Lucia is one of our biggest dogs, but one of the sweetest and most gentle. She is a dream to walk and always cruises politely alongside you. She’s with you for the journey and doesn’t care about the destination ❤️

With her soulful eyes and her big ears that can pick up radio from distant lands, she’s a real head-turner and would be the pride of any dog park.

She moonlights as an amateur Marmaduke impersonator in her free time - but don’t rely on this to pay the bills!

Our volunteer house is for sale and we URGENTLY have to vacate the property by mid-September.

We have absolutely no space to place all our animals in the main house.
We need to find homes for at least 10 dogs ASAP.

For many months the same mama dog has been living at the colectivo stop by the airport. She’s always either pregnant or nursing new puppies, constantly scavenging for food in the trash around the bus stop. Right now, she has two young pups with her.

Every time we pass by, we bring them food. This isn’t just about feeding them but also gaining their trust so we can try to catch her and bring her and her puppies to our next spay/neuter clinic.

This poor mama is another heartbreaking reminder of the importance of spaying and neutering. She has raised countless babies in harsh conditions and deserves a better life.

Benito isn’t just handsome, he’s a boy with many talents and interests.

He’s as athletic as anything and would make a great asset to any track team 🏃‍♂️‍➡️ he’s also a huge goofball and the sweetest boy around!

He loves long walkies to watch the sunrise, ear scritches, and romantic comedies. Okay, we might have made the last one up, but he probably would like them if he knew what they were 🤷‍♀️

📣 UPDATE: Thank you all! The CDC has updated the requirements and it appears the signatures of SENASICA are no longer required.

🚨URGENT: Help Us Advocate for Mexican Dogs!🚨

You may have already heard about the CDC changes for dog imports to the USA coming into effect August 1, 2024.

As part of the new requirements, the CDC requires all dogs from low-risk rabies countries, like Mexico, to get a specific USDA form signed by a government authority - SENASICA in Mexico City. But SENASICA has stated they can't meet this requirement.

Canada faced a similar issue but was granted an exemption. Mexico still needs to be given this exemption.

We're urging everyone to contact elected officials to petition the CDC for the same exemption for Mexico. We also need SENASICA to push for this exemption. Without this change, dogs vaccinated in Mexico won't be able to enter the USA which means our Amigos doggies (and countless others) can no longer be adopted to, or transit through the USA.

You can help us by:

1.⁠ ⁠Contact SENISACA and let them know your concerns. Write an email to [email protected]
- Send your letter in Spanish (use Google translate if needed)
- Share the impact and the loss to Mexico if this goes through
- Share that Canada also declined to accept regulation as-is and it has been granted an exemption
- Share that going in person to SENASICA is prohibitive
- Urge them to push for the dismissal of the government vet signature

A heartbreaking reminder of the importance of spaying and neutering animals!

A few days ago, our head volunteer, Zoe, came upon a box of abandoned puppies. These tiny babies, only days old, were left alone in a plastic box by the shelter.

These puppies are helpless victims of unsterilised pets falling pregnant and owners unable to care for them.

While we absolutely cannot take in new resident animals, Zoe couldn’t turn away these tiny babies who would have died within hours without intervention. She is now feeding and caring for them until they’re big enough to find homes. 🍼🐶

This situation highlights the critical need for spaying and neutering animals!

To prevent future boxes of abandoned babies, we need your support. Our next spay/neuter clinic is in August, and we’re counting on your donations to make it a success! ❤️

The summer season doesn’t only mean the rain is here. It also brings a much higher risk of ticks and other nasties that we want to keep off our animals!

So at this time of year, bath day is an extra important opportunity to give the dogs a good clean and a thorough check for creepy crawlies!

Sofia is on the mend! ❤️‍🩹

A little over a week ago we asked for support for our special girl Sofia to have a large tumour removed - and what an incredible response we got!

Thanks to the quick and generous response from you, our amazing Amigos community, Sofia’s tumour has been removed successfully and she is a big step closer to regaining a much greater quality of life ❤️

Sofia is already back playing with her friends and her happy, wiggly energy during her recovery has put a smile on everyone’s faces here at Amigos.

We are so grateful for everyone helping us care for this little love. Thank you all once again 🙏

Today we say goodbye to Mayu after a month of volunteering with us at the shelter!

Mayu's willingness to help and awesome attitude made her such a great asset to the team during her stay. She even helped walk dogs and clean on her mornings off when we were short on volunteers!

Her dedication and team spirit truly shone through from the beginning of her stay until her last day☀️🐶

Thank you so much for everything Mayu, our team and all the animals will miss you a lot ❤️

Sofia needs surgery and we’re seeking support to cover the cost ❤️‍🩹

Our sweet girl Sofia who is living with an autoimmune condition has developed a large tumour on her chest.

While growths like this are not necessarily uncommon with her condition, this is abnormally large, growing rapidly and causing her discomfort. Additionally, it is constantly getting caught when she’s playing and could cause her further infection and suffering.

The surgery to remove this growth is around $175 USD and we need your help to make this possible and get this little girl on the mend and comfortable again.

Our Story

in 2013 Stasya Briggs and Mike Heiner bought and rebuilt a beautiful bed and breakfast in Barra de Potosi, Gro, Mexico, - Hacienda la Rusa. The property's purpose started to alter when Stasya and Mike rescued abandoned newly born kittens. Stasya and Mike have started an animal welfare project Amigos de Animales of Barra de Potosi. from 2013 till 1016 Mike's and Stasya's hard work resulted in 700 animals sterilized and dozens and dozens rescued , fostered and adopted. in 2016 Shelley Juss joined Amigos de Animales and ever since, two passionate ladies Shelley and Stasya have been tirelessly working on rescue, sterilizations and education.

Edgar and Gris have been volunteers for Amigos free and low cost Spay and Nueter clinics and without hesitation became caretakers of the Safe House for our rescues.
