Amigos de Animales We rescue stray, sick and abused animals and find them homes. We organise spay and neuter clinics. Rat poison was the way they used to control strays population.

in 2013 Stasya Briggs and Mike Heiner bought and rebuilt a beautiful bed and breakfast in Barra de Potosi, Gro, Mexico, - Hacienda la Rusa and a few months later Stasya witnessed stray dogs dying from poison. Village after village , Stasya went to talk to people and authorities and promised she would take care of the problem a humane way . She started to catch dogs and cats and drive them every d

ay to the SPAZ and local vet to spay or neuter. This is how an animal welfare project Amigos de Animales has started . Hard work of the founder and the group of amazing volunteers have resulted in numerous Mass Spay and Neuter clinics , 7000 + animals sterilized and hundreds rescued , fostered and adopted. what Amigos de Animales do :

* we pick up dogs & cats, take them to a local vet , pay for sterilization, return them back home or street

* we organize and pay for low cost or free mass spay and neuter programs and clinic

* we rescue, foster, treat, feed and vaccinate stray, hurt, abandoned animals

* we take animals we cant save to be euthanized and we stand by their side, providing last comfort

* we look for ways to transport animals up north where they have better chances to find a loving home

what you can do:

* donate, donate, donate

* organize a fundraiser or event of any kind to raise money to support the project

* foster or adopt or transport an animal up north

I am a little boy and I think my name is either hey or go away. I have been homeless for a long time,
I would peak thru the gates hoping someone would take me in, but people would shush me away. I did not lose hope to find a home, but then I became half blind , then I was hit by a car and hurt and I lost all hope , I knew I would be crossing the rainbow bridge very soon, but then … one day … I heard some ladies walking the street, feeding all stray pups and kitties on the way and they saw me !

These ladies picked me up and brought me to something like a doctors office with funny smells and lots of needles, but I was not scared of needles and I was not try to bite kind ladies, I knew they were trying to help !

I am recovering very fast and I heard ladies talking that I have to return back to the streets unless someone adopts me,
If there is a kind soul to give me a forever home, I will be your best friend , I promise !

Please , donate toward medical bills, towards stray dogs and cats feeds , and of course spay and neuter. If you can’t donate , say a prayer and spread the word about Amigos and any other organization close to your heart. ❤️

Lucia's New Life 💖🐕

After two big days of travel, Lucia spent her first days in her new home sleeping off jetlag and enjoying being a couch potato!

Now she’s more settled and looks right at home with her family, James, Robin, Gavin, and four-legged sister Holly! Holly is already accepting Lucia into the family and showing her how sweet adopted life can be!

She’s learning about deer as her new hometown has them in abundance, and her mom, Robin, told us “Jimmy watched her and a doe do a stand-off through the fence. The deer was looking through at Lucy, probably thinking she was a baby deer, and Lucy looked at the deer like she was the strangest dog she had ever seen!” 🦌😂

With winter approaching, the temperature dropped to 1 degree last week, and it was a big NOPE from Lucia, who then parked herself beside the woodstove and lay down for a 6-hour snooze. 😴

So maybe being a couch potato had less to do with jetlag and more about becoming her truest, cozy self, but either way, we’re over the moon for this beautiful girl and her lovely family. ❤️

Hopefully Holly being a malamute means she'll teach Lucia how to handle the snow when it comes! ☃️

Another happy update! 🐶❤️

Sweet little lady Catalina is so happy at home with her new feline friends and is surrounded by love from her new parents, Rachael and Saralyn. She looks like she can’t quite believe her luck!

Mom Saralyn says, “We love her more than anything, and she has completed our family. She loves sleeping in bed with us and has a special ramp so that she can climb up onto the bed and the couch. She’s adapting well to her cat siblings and is always smiling.”

If that doesn’t bring a happy tear to your eye, we don’t know what will 🥹😭🥰

The three sisters are all enjoying life in their forever homes 🥹🐕❤️

Gloria is loving life with Greg and Lindsey and is settling in well with her new feline friends. As a high-energy girlie with lots of love to give, she’s super excited to have not just one, but two humans of her very own to play, cuddle and go on walkies with!

Little golden girl Berta has been learning her place in the house living with cats 😹 and is so happy to be back with her all-time favourite volunteer, Kaitlin. She’s also been enjoying regular visits and playdates with her sisters. Having both a family of humans and her canine family together, Berta's life is full of love ❤️

Tenzie (formerly Ortencia) is living the good life with Barbara and is lucky enough to live by the forest - a new wonder to explore! From surviving Parvo as a little pup and spending the first year of her life in the shelter to being adopted into a home full of love (and cuddly toys!), what an amazing turnaround and happy ending for sweet Tenzie.

We couldn’t be happier for all these girlies and their new families. We wish them all the best and hope to receive plenty of happy updates and photos in the future 🥰🐶

The Girl Who Rescued a Rescue 💗

My heart is overwhelmed with love and gratitude to Zoe, our head volunteer, who knowing she’d be leaving and the volunteer house would soon be sold, found a solution for the dogs she’d looked after like her own.

With help from Max, a former volunteer, and his connections at veterinary school, we teamed up with an incredible rescue network in Mexico City.

What started as a plan to send Zoe’s rescued litter of puppies soon expanded, allowing us to place nearly all our adoptable dogs with amazing fosters. We are beyond grateful for this group, who stepped in before the dogs’ lives at Amigos would have taken a difficult turn.

Without their help, overcrowded corrals and chained dogs would have been a reality. The dogs would have faced lives with limited walks, missing out on the daily love and attention they were so used to from the volunteers.

Now, most of the dogs are with fosters in the city, where they’re well cared for and loved while they wait for their forever homes (and maybe even a foster fail or two 😉🐕❤️).

Big big thanks to Zoe for coordinating in her final weeks, Ana and the Mexico City team, Max for the life-changing connection, and Gris and her family for making the long journey to deliver the dogs safely.

I’m so proud of my team and the amazing outcome for the dogs!

📣 Dog Delivery Updates 📣

Over the past couple of days Kaitlin and I have been on a huge road trip from Vancouver to Winnipeg delivering adopted dogs! 🚐🐕

On Saturday we delivered Melissa and Laura from the Vancouver flight to their awesome adopters, Angela and Lisa. Then on Sunday morning, setting off before sunrise with five dogs loaded into a minivan, we set off on our 2400km journey! Our first stop was in Kimberley, where we delivered sweet Lucia to her forever family, Robin, James and Gavin, before continuing on to Winnipeg!

The adventure was full of new experiences for the dogs, who were patient and well-behaved, trusting that this crazy journey would lead them to their new homes.

Kaitlin has adopted Berta, her grandmother Barbara has adopted Ortencia (now Tenzie 🥹) and her brother Greg and his partner Lindsey have adopted Gloria, so all three littermates will live close to each other in Winnipeg. And last but not least, sweet girl Catalina has been adopted by Saralyn and Rachael friends of Kaitlin, so all these girlies can stay in touch!

We look forward to sharing more updates as all the girls settle into their new lives ❤️🐶

Preparing for take-off!

Today might be my final day on the ground at Amigos, but I’m not done yet!

Lucia, Laura, Catalina, Berta, Gloria, Ortencia and Melissa have all packed their bags to join me on the plane today 🧳🐕✈️ I’m so happy to be able to help get these girlies up to Vancouver and to their forever families!

I’ll then be continuing to look after the Amigos’ social media from afar, so you haven’t heard the last from me just yet ☺️

I do want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your kind comments, messages and all the hugs from those of you I’ve met in person! You’ve been a wonderful and supportive community and it hasn’t gone unnoticed, and certainly won’t be forgotten!

So a huge thank you to all from the bottom of my heart ❤️

Hello Family, it’s Stasya, the founder, CEO and volunteer for Amigos de Animales.

If you missed our previous posts, I would like to go over the details of the situation we are facing right now at the sanctuary.

As you know, Amigos’ mission is animal welfare, education and mass spay and neutering. Our sanctuary was started for animals facing life-and-death situations only. We don't accept owner surrenders etc..

Originally these rescued dogs and cats lived with me at my property my working and operating Bed & Breakfast and rental villa.

When the number of dogs at Hacienda la Rusa was over 20, I was forced to rent a house on a small lot, that became our main shelter, the place we lovingly call our Casa Principal.

Years later, with over 100 animals, as an open-air, no-kill shelter, we were very vulnerable to epidemics of parvo and distemper and were losing babies too often. We didn’t want to change our model to cages and limited contact between animals and humans, so the volunteer house was rented so we would have more space and less risk of deadly diseases.

This volunteer house is now being sold by the owner - not Amigos!

We still have our Casa Principal, the main shelter property and there lives our sanctuary manager Gris, all the cats and many dogs; disabled, special needs, newborn, and hospice dogs. So Amigos is not going anywhere, just being forced to downsize.

By next week, we have to find homes for as many dogs as possible to be able to safely merge 2 properties and their residents.

Right now our focus is on this pressing emergency to place dogs before we vacate the volunteer house. After this crisis, we can take a breath, regroup, and look at how we rebuild our volunteer program and get back to what we do best - spay/neuter, education, rescue!

We have no volunteer team at the moment, the last one standing is our dedicated, tough, amazing head volunteer Zoe who is leaving on Saturday and transporting a few adopted dogs to Canada on her way out.

Thank you, my friends, everyone who donates, fosters, adopts, shares our posts and supports what we do - we will get through this!

With Eternal Love and Gratitude,
Stasya and Amigos

Hi guys! It’s Zoe!

Today is my birthday (and Mexican Independence Day - Viva Mexico! 🇲🇽🥳). While I’m celebrating today, my heart is still with the dogs here.

I’ll be leaving Amigos in less than a week, and we still have many wonderful dogs looking for their forever homes. Each of them has a unique personality and a lot of love to give, and I know there’s a perfect match out there for every one of them!

For my birthday this year, I’d love nothing more than to see more of our amazing dogs find their forever families!

Can you help make my birthday wish come true? 🤞

If you’re interested in adopting or want to learn more about any of our four-legged friends, please reach out. I’d be happy to help you find the perfect match ❤️

Let's get these doggos out of here! 🐕

Our Story

in 2013 Stasya Briggs and Mike Heiner bought and rebuilt a beautiful bed and breakfast in Barra de Potosi, Gro, Mexico, - Hacienda la Rusa. The property's purpose started to alter when Stasya and Mike rescued abandoned newly born kittens. Stasya and Mike have started an animal welfare project Amigos de Animales of Barra de Potosi. from 2013 till 1016 Mike's and Stasya's hard work resulted in 700 animals sterilized and dozens and dozens rescued , fostered and adopted. in 2016 Shelley Juss joined Amigos de Animales and ever since, two passionate ladies Shelley and Stasya have been tirelessly working on rescue, sterilizations and education.

Edgar and Gris have been volunteers for Amigos free and low cost Spay and Nueter clinics and without hesitation became caretakers of the Safe House for our rescues.

Mitch , Patty and Pam joined the little army in fall of 2017 and ever since the team works together : * we pick up dogs & cats, take them to a local vet or SPAZ, pay for sterilization, return them back home or street * we organize and pay for low cost or free spay and neuter programs and clinic * we rescue, foster, treat, feed and vaccinate stray, hurt, abandoned animals * we take animals we cant save to be euthanized and we stand by their side, providing last comfort * we look for ways to transport animals up north where they have better chances to find a loving home what you can do: * donate, donate, donate - this project is supported by kindness of your donations * organize a fundraiser or event of any kind to raise money to support the project * foster or adopt or transport an animal up north, believe us, its easy!
