While excessive fat is commonly blamed for pancreatitis flare-ups, other dietary factors can also play a role. This includes too much carbohydrate, sugary treats, or processed foods.

The classic bland diet (chicken breast and rice) might seem like a simple solution, but it is flawed and can exacerbate your pet’s pancreatitis:
🍗 Potential Allergies: Chicken can trigger sensitivities in some pets, worsening gut inflammation.
🍚 Carbohydrate Content: Rice can put further pressure on the pancreas to produce amylase (the enzyme needed to break down starches). Pets do not produce amylase in abundance, unlike humans hence, excessive carbohydrates can be a pancreatitis risk factor in itself.

Here’s what we recommend:
🦴 Remove all processed treats and foods that are difficult for your pet to digest.
🦴 Focus on 2-3 easily digestible, natural ingredients.
🦴 Select a lean protein source your pet tolerates well.
🦴 Feed smaller meals for 2-3 days to reduce strain on the pancreas.

One of the most commonly misunderstood concepts of feeding raw is that it equates to high protein consumption. However, that's not true!

Raw meat contains only 18-21% protein, with the balance largely made up of moisture (~75%) and fat and other micronutrients.

Cooking food can cause protein levels to rise further due to moisture evaporation and the concentration of non-water compounds.

This is why most cooked and processed pet foods typically contain 20% to 40% protein content - significantly higher than their raw counterparts!

Additionally, cooking food can denature proteins and destroy micronutrients, making them less bioavailable to the body. That’s why raw food diets may result in smaller stools due to increased nutrient absorption.

“Before starting on the BOM BOM, Maya was an unbelievably fussy eater who ate once every 3 days at her worst. Out of desperation, I tried every brand of food (kibbles, freeze-dried, cooked, raw) that you can imagine but she always lost interest after 1-2 meals and would go on hunger strikes again.

As I was unaware on how to identify allergens and appropriate ingredients, Maya suffered from chronic gut and skin issues too. She would bite/scratch until she had bald patches which took ages to grow back (likely due to malnutrition). Sadly, Maya was also born with hip dysplasia and luxating patella. After a day of vigorous activity, she would sometimes limp, and it was heartbreaking to see as she’s a playful dog who loves to be active!

Through a friend’s recommendation, I learned about BOM BOM and was guided by BOM BOM’s nutrition team on how to select and trial proteins safely, the appropriate amount to feed, and how to eliminate fussiness. After several months, the results were way better than I ever expected!

Just like humans, balancing calorie intake and calorie expenditure can be a tricky endeavour. Gender, lifestyle, hormones, metabolic rates, life stages, diet choices can all play a part in balancing the scales!

To determine if your pet is at a healthy weight, view your pet from the side or top-down and, refer to this Body Condition Score index:

1️⃣ Severely underweight - Ribs, backbone, pelvic bones sticking out.
2️⃣ Underweight - Noticeable muscle loss, leading to a defined waistline & abdominal tuck.
3️⃣ Ideal weight - Ribs, pelvis, and backbone felt under a thin layer of fat.
4️⃣ Overweight - Waistline not visible. The backbone and pelvis are hard to feel without pressure.
5️⃣ Obese - Ribs and backbone not palpable under a thick layer of fat.

Should you notice your pet isn't within the ideal weight range, it may be time to adjust their diet and portions. Chasing weight goals should never be done over a short span of time or substituting one macronutrient at the expense of another (e.g. salads are not the solution to healthy weight loss!), as it can lead to a variety of physiological and hormonal issues.

Wondering which protein is best for your furry companions? Here's a comprehensive guide to help you make the right choice:

🥩 Start with a protein your pet knows and tolerates well; be cautious with new proteins, especially if they've caused adverse reactions like diarrhoea, vomiting, or itching.

🥩 Keep in mind that processed or cooked proteins might not accurately reflect your pet's tolerance or allergy to raw counterparts.

🥩 There's no ideal or hypoallergenic protein. What's hypoallergenic for one pet could trigger allergies in another.
