Happy Birthday Dude!!! On our 15th ride we cantered for the first time and he was so good!!! One little sassy moment that was hilarious, but other than that you would never know it was his first time cantering under saddle 🥰🥰🥰

First Foothills Riding Club show of the year was super productive with a lot of firsts!! Buckle in for a novel!

Krysten and Belfast went to their very first dressage show ever and their first show at all in many years. Belfast was way more nervous than we expected but Krysten did a Great job of helping him and handled some extra moves with excellent tact 😆.

Ashley took Cookie out for his first outing in over a year. After some needed discussions in their first 3rd level test, Ashley was able to show off the new balance we've been working on in the canter and was rewarded with a 70% in their 3rd-2 test. I think that was the highest score from that judge all day! 🤩

Julie and Stella tackled 2nd 1 with more finesse than last years first attempt and most importantly achieved the goal of keeping her reins short throughout the whole test 🤪💪 (we've all been there! 😉)

Bri and Fiddle had a solid test continuing to work on showing off what they can do at home in the show ring. So close to putting those warmup ring/show nerves to rest! 😁

Maggie and the adorable Lucky (thanks Christine for letting her borrow him!) did their first show together with solid efforts in the grasshopper CT and training 1. This is still a super new partnership with more to come!

Lily and Romeo competed together for the very first time, in fact, Lily's first horse show ever!! I was super impressed with how she handled the hubbub of warm up and everything else that is a zoo with these shows 🤩

Rachael and the adorable Prius had a great go in the grasshopper CT. When I met them, Prius couldn't really canter and definitely didn't know about jumping. Rachael has done a great job developing her and was rewarded with a great score and ribbon!

I took Rylee's Beau for his first starter CT. He has been really gaining confidence and strength in all the work at home but unfortunately was very nervous for his dressage test and didn't show off what he could do. But he was wonderfully brave in the jumping and just stepped over everything wondering what the big deal was 😜

And last but not least, the best little Dude went for his first outing. I'm a terrible mom and trainer and him going down centerline was the 10th time that he's Ever been ridden 🤦. . So we had a couple moments and it was definitely very wobbly, but I'm just SO tickled with him. He's never been anywhere before and I genuinely think he got a kick out of the whole experience. He handled wandering around the showgrounds including going over the bridges like a total champ and wasn't even intimidated by all the horses in the warm-up ring. Everybody is going to get so tired of me saying this but I'm so sad he didn't grow very tall because he is absolutely perfect other than that 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Goooo Ponies!

Dude is everything I had hoped for when I crossed the 2 ponies.... Has the absolute best personality and is adorable...Except he didn't grow as tall as them, staying at about 13.3 (SP is almost 14.2 and LeBron is 14.1) 😢 That 2 inches makes a big difference! I'll be honest I haven't really known what I was going to do with him other than absolutely adore him...And didn't really have time to worry about it anyway. But I decided this year I'm going to ride him even though he is a shrimp! 😆

So far he is being as wonderful as I figured he would be... This is our second real ride together... First one was on the lunge and this is the first off. And he's already trotting and steering like a champ. 💖💖💖

Everybody just tell me that I don't look ridiculously big on him to make me feel better. K thanks 😝

Sport Pony and I got to participate in 's farrier jam last night and it was a great experience! In addition to her multiple soft tissue injuries over the years (stop running around like a ding d**g pony), since 2021 she has had a right front lameness that has been managed easily with a plain pad by my wonderful farrier. She has been barefoot for the last year living her best feral life and is currently pretty sound. But I want to be proactive this year bringing her back into fitness and make sure she feels her best. Last night she got fresh X-rays (still unremarkable, yay!) and the farriers and vets all discussed the best plan of action based on her history and future goal. As much as I would love to keep her barefoot, they all agreed with the history it would just be a matter of when, not if, that she would get sore again. So she got some nice new sneakers-leather pads up front with a pour pad underneath, and hinds with quite a bit of length of heel to support the old injuries and to hopefully help with her tendency to pull shoes (again, please stop running around like a ding d**g pony). It was fun and educational to hear all these experienced folks pick apart my pony and all come to basically the same consensus on what should help her to be her best. Thanks again Dr Williamson for inviting us!! 🥰

Well said!!! And it's definitely not just young horses! We riders have to continuously try to be the best that we can be.. most of the time horses lack suppleness and have resistance because we are accidentally blocking them by being out of balance or stiff ourselves.. I'm so grateful my first dressage instructor brought in the esteemed Jeff Moore multiple times a year for clinics... While he is certainly a character, his basic philosophy was that if the rider sits in the correct balance and asks in a correct way, the horse will *always* do the correct thing. Anytime I'm stuck or a student is stuck, we always go back to the basics of being in the "middle" of the horse and while it may not completely fix the situation, it *always* improves things drastically 🥰

If there is one thing I’ve done throughout my career, it’s ride a lot of young horses.

When you spend that much time starting horses from the ground up, you start to realize that we often talk about "suppleness" as if it’s a gym goal, something to be achieved through more bending, more lunging, or more "work."

But with a young horse, stiffness isn't a physical problem. It’s a mental one.

Stiffness is the physical manifestation of doubt.

When a young horse is out of balance, they feel vulnerable. Their instinct is to brace, to lock their neck, hollow their back, and wear their muscles like internal armor. They are holding onto themselves because they don't yet trust that they can stay upright without that tension.

You cannot force a horse to be supple. You can only invite them to be balanced.

Suppleness is what happens the moment the horse feels secure enough to let go. It’s the "release" of the internal brace. As the rider, your job isn't to "bend" the horse into submission; it's to be so steady in your seat and so clear in your intent that the horse feels safe enough to let go.

This is the ultimate parallel in life and training:

★ Balance is the prerequisite for freedom. It is the rider being so predictable that the horse can find his own center.

★ Suppleness is the evidence of that freedom. It is the "release" of the muscles once the fear of falling is gone.

★ Trust is the bridge between the two.

Suppleness isn't something you create; it’s what’s left over when the horse finally feels secure enough to drop their internal armor and let the movement flow through them.

Next time you feel resistance under the saddle, don't ask "How do I make them bend?" Ask, "What am I doing that makes them feel like they need to hold on?"

Mastery isn't forcing the suppleness. It’s creating the safety that allows the suppleness to emerge.
