Smaller scratching surfaces could consist of something as simple as an upturned piece of carpet or a flat sisal pillow with a loop so it can be hung from a doorknob. Corrugated cardboard may also work. Scratching posts can be vertical or horizontal. This will depend on what the cat likes to scratch.

Scratching posts can be purchased at most pet stores or online, but many people make their own.

To avoid damage to furniture, it is very important to accustom a cat living in an apartment to a scratching post as early as possible. Many owners limit themselves to making or purchasing a scratching post, but this is often not enough

A scratching post is a wooden post, board or more complex surface covered with rough material, which is installed by cat owners so that their pets can scratch them and thus sharpen their claws. Cats have a natural need to scratch, an action that helps them remove dead layers from their claws and mark territory with scent glands on their paws. Indoor cats can channel this desire into furniture and upholstery, so they are trained to use scratching posts.
