BUNNY!

Bunny was born in late May 2024. She’s petite and has super-soft bunny fur. Bunny is a dilute calico and has the big personality to go with it. She’s cuddly, curious, and playful, but she’s also adventurous and silly. Bunny has a squeaky little voice and likes to make “comments” when she is exploring and running around. She has no fear of her big brothers and will tackle and wrestle with them for the fun of it even though they’re lots bigger than her. When she’s not playing or racing, she loves to sit on her foster mom’s lap or shoulders and lick her face and ear. Bunny can be shy when you first meet her because she hasn’t gotten to meet a lot of new people, but it doesn’t last very long. She would do best with gentle older children (not toddlers), calm adults, and a calmer household. She would do best do best if she were adopted with one of her siblings, like Henry, to keep her company.

Bunny is spayed and microchipped, and she has all of her vaccinations for the first year.

If you are interested in adopting Bunny, the adoption fee is $35. Call Mary at 505-470-6973 for more info, an adoption application, and to meet Bunny.

HENRY!

Henry was born in late April 2024. He’s a little older and less wild than his younger foster siblings, but he’s still pretty kitten curious and playful. Henry loves to play with toys, especially crinkle balls. He likes to explore the house and look for new things to investigate and play with, but he also likes to sit on peoples legs or lap and keep them company. Sometimes, he likes to just sit off to the side of whatever is going on and watch. When he’s not competing with his 7 foster siblings for attention, he will probably be even more snuggly. He is a bit more reserved and cautious than his siblings, but he likes to keep company with people. He can be shy when you first meet him because he hasn’t gotten to meet a lot of new people. It usually doesn’t last very long. Henry is intimidated by high energy people and homes, so he'll do best in a home with quiet adults and older children.

Henry is neutered and microchipped and has all of vaccinations for the first year.

If you interested in adopting Henry, the adoption fee is $35. Call Mary at 505-470-6973 for more info, an adoption application, and to meet Henry.

If you interested in adopting Henry, the adoption fee is $35 for Henry or $50 for both Henry and Zoey. Call Mary at 505-470-6973 for more info, an adoption application, and to meet Henry.

ZOEY!

Zoey was born in early May 2024. She’s a loving, snuggly girl who wants attention and laps, but she also really loves to play with toys and race around the house like a wild thing. She’s very curious and make the cutest trill while she’s running around. Zoey loves being on her foster mom’s shoulders while she watches TV. She can get over-excited and play too rough with people, but she’s getting better about that as she gets older and is competing less with her 7 foster siblings. Still, given the rough playing, Zoey would do best in a home without young children and with experienced cat owners who can help her grow out of her rough-housing behavior. She can be shy when you first meet her because she hasn’t gotten to meet a lot of new people, but it doesn’t last very long.

Zoey is spayed and microchipped, and she has all of her vaccinations for the first year.

If you interested in adopting Zoey, the adoption fee is $35. Call Mary at 505-470-6973 for more info, an adoption application, and to meet Zoey.

We received a call from someone needing urgent short-term foster or boarding for her 3-year-old Calico kitty while she is in the hospital 2-3 weeks. The cat is located in Pojoaque. She does not want to rehome the cat and only needs to find something short-term. She can provide food/litter. Please contact her son Jeremy if you can help: 505-310-8897. The cat would do best separated from other animals in your home during her stay.

If you have ideas for low-cost cat boarding, please also share in the comments.

Thank you!

Clementine needs surgery for her fractured femur, and her family is facing challenges with the vet bill due to their own medical struggles. Los Alamos Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals can make this surgery possible with a little community support.

Estimate is $2500-3000 and our fundraising goal is $1500. Donations go directly to LAFOS so we can assist with this bill at Yucca Veterinary Medical Center in Belen, NM. There will also be an opportunity to donate at our pancake breakfast fundraiser Sept. 1st at the Posse Lodge. Thank you for sharing or donating to help Clementine!

September 1 we are hosting a Pancake Breakfast, courtesy of the Posse Lodge. The breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Posse Lodge on North Mesa. The menu includes, scrambled eggs, pancakes (plain, blueberry, banana, and chocolate chip), and bacon and sausage, as well as orange juice and coffee. The cost is just $10 and only $5 for kids under 5, and this is an all you care to eat breakfast!

To make this event even more of a “can’t miss” for you and your family we will also be hosting a mobile pet adoption and we will be awarding fun door prizes! We will have lovable adoptable pets on site from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. courtesy of our local partner, Dew Paws Rescue. And we will be awarding gift cards from local pet supply store and huge rescue pet supporter for the past 20 years, Pet Pangaea. Door prize drawings will be at half past the hour, so be ready to win!

Wait, there’s more! We will have available for purchase our unique pottery donated by talented local potters – yet another way to support our pets in need.

The historic Posse Lodge building and its members host the annual Dinner/ Dance that coordinates with the Los Alamos County Rodeo and Fair held in August of each year. Posse members work hard to promote and preserve the Western Heritage that remains to this day. The townspeople look forward to this event every year.

The Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse exists to restore and maintain this glorious building for posterity. It is more likely utilized today than in days past. Entertaining 10,000-12,000 county residents yearly, it has served this community for 54 years. It continues to assist in raising thousands for charity, helps create wonderful memories for many in the community, and stands to honor the history of this town as it was being built.

Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of homeless animals by promoting adoption and paying for medical care and spay/neutering of homeless animals in north central New Mexico.

Through the FOSCA veterinary assistance program, we will provide about $22,000 to help pay for veterinary care for homeless animals and pets whose owners cannot afford extensive treatment. FOSCA pays for treatment of heartworm disease and parvovirus, surgery for removal of broken legs, dental treatments, and removal of cysts and tumors. These life-saving treatments allow beloved pets to go home with their devoted owners. In 2018 FOSCA “saved Christmas” for two families by providing funds to help pay for abscess removals on Slinky the dog and Miss M the cat.

FOSCA also provides funding to individuals and rescue groups to spay/ neuter 200 cats and dogs each year, significantly contributing to the effort to reduce the population of unwanted pets in New Mexico. They are especially proud to be working with rescue groups in three northern New Mexico Pueblos and the Navajo Nation to reduce endemic pet overpopulation in those areas.

Come out and enjoy the fun and bring a healthy appetite (and maybe a few doggie treats) and donate to several worthy causes while enjoying a delicious breakfast!

Entry forms are available online and at Ridgeview Veterinary Hospital and Pet Pangaea.

Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals, a humane organization based in Los Alamos is trying to improve the quality of life for unwanted pets and find homes for homeless animals. We work closely with local shelters, with local veterinarians, and with other humane societies.

Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals sponsors two special programs to help pet owners and reduce the number of unwanted pets. The Catastrophic Illness/Injury program provides funds for veterinary treatment of severely ill or injured pets whose owners cannot afford extensive treatment. The second program provides vouchers for free spay/neutering of pets, in order to encourage pet owners to make sure that their pets are surgically altered and cannot produce litters of unwanted cats or dogs. We also provide funding for spay/neuter surgeries in partnership with local rescue groups, including organizations that work with local pueblos and the Navajo Nation to reduce pet overpopulation there.

The 2025 calendars will go on sale in November at local businesses, and all proceeds will go directly to help the animals through Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals programs. So, remember, get those entries in by September 27!

Calling all Cattle Dog Lovers!
We wanted to spotlight this lady Shyla who was evacuated from Ruidoso, NM and is now in foster care through Española Humane. She is a 2 yr old, 27 lbs, active heeler, who wants to explore her surrounding and get to know you at her own pace. Her ideal adopter will let her decompress and settle in, without pushing her to do too much too soon. What her foster family says: Shyla is the real deal and has all the awesome traits of a Cattle Dog. She is an active, fun-size girl who is smart as a whip, loyal, does the heeler check-in with her human when walking or running, and loves to have a job. She enjoys her daily walks or runs and exploring all around her. Shyla loves the outdoors and would make a great companion for hiking or any outdoor activity. She will need a few days to settle in, sniff out her home and decompress before she loves you to pieces. Your sign will be when she gives you a kiss and snuggles right up to you. She also loves a good sit-down on the couch with her human. Shyla learns commands quick; she knows sit, down, spin and come. She displays good discipline and sits for her foster mom every time she is leashed. She is house and leash trained. Shyla is dog selective so she should be the only dog in the house, and no cats. With training, she may be able to overcome that. With a little patience and a lot of love, Shyla should quickly open up and start loving her new life with you! 21/11/2023

Our dear friend Sally passed away earlier this month. Sally was one of a kind, thoughtful and caring and tirelessly dedicated to improving the lives of pets in need in northern New Mexico. Sally was the world's best adoptive dog mom, taking in those dogs too aggressive, too fearful, too damaged or just too unloved to find a home anywhere else. As a co-founder of Friends of the Shelter, Sally spent countless hours volunteering, whether walking dogs at the shelter, raising funds, working on partnerships with local vet clinics, supporting and assisting other local rescues and shelters, and helping pet owners who needed assistance with adoptions, surrenders, or getting life-saving vet care for their pets. Sally's greatest passion was promoting spay/neuter programs through education, increased access, and financial assistance in order to reduce pet suffering and homelessness in the future. All of us who knew her benefited from her warmth and empathy, and so many animals, too numerous to count, in northern New Mexico owe their health, happiness and very lives to her. Sally's passing leaves a huge void in our lives and hearts and we will all profoundly miss her.
