How horses and humans react to one another’s body language, and how this mutual responsivity is reflected on by young people and / or therapy staff is still a source of continued fascination and learning for us.

Any gardeners out there that would like to give us a hand this weekend?

Our cofounder is running £10k this weekend in 30 degree heat to raise money to ensure we can continue to provide support for young people through the holidays. Please do consider sharing or donating. The holidays can be a challenging time for many young people with their usual routine and support systems unavailable so it’s really important we can continue to provide support for those most in need.
Do you want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money in aid of Strength and Learning T… Rosie Bensley needs your support for Horses helping people

Teamwork is a key skill young people learn at SLTH and they learn it from the horses. The horses live together on the track as one big herd and so they model healthy relationships for young people to learn from.
Sometimes the horses don’t get on with one another and our therapists help young people think about when this happens in human relationships.
And sometimes relationships in the herd involve collaboration and teamwork such as these guys today working together to keep the flies at bay from each other’s faces.
Whatever relationships the horses are demonstrating it’s often easier for young people to learn from them than to learn from people. Looking at equine bodies to understand the impact of energy and emotions on one another is simpler than unpicking the complexities of human interactions which involve a lot of verbal communication.

Healing Horses
At our dedicated stables in Edgware, North London, we see between 250 and 300 young people each year, helping them to overcome mental health, learning disability or behavioural challenges through working with horses on our Equine Therapy, Education and Work Experience programmes. We also run an After School Club and hold day camps in school holidays.
Last year, 52% of our clients had Special Educational Needs and 46% had either current or past Safeguarding involvement. With our help, 89% said that their confidence had increased and 82% felt that their communication skills had improved.
Mohammed is a typical success story:
“Mohammed has been attending an education course this term with his school. Mohammed has an autism diagnosis, various mental health diagnoses and a registered physical disability. At school his anxiety was crippling him, he wasn't attending classes and had no relationships with other students. On his first day with us his school staff and other students all treated Mohammed as though he was less capable than the others due to his disability and anxiety. The teachers jumped to help him and give him support before he'd had a chance to attempt a task himself and the students did things for him instead of waiting and letting Mohammed have a go. Mohammed accepted this help in a withdrawn and depressed way without any protest.
Things changed immediately as soon as Mohammed started working with the horses. Mohammed built an instant connection with our smallest horse Percy - Percy needs a very assertive leader otherwise he won't comply. To everyone's surprise Mohammed immediately stepped up to the mark to show Percy he was in charge and got Percy to follow him and listen when all the other students had failed. Suddenly Mohammed had a voice and started talking to staff and students, his whole posture and demeanour changed and a hidden confidence came through.
Over the next few weeks Mohammed consistently proved that his ability to empathise and control the horses was the best in his group of students and everyone's perception of him began to change. The other students branded Mohammed as The Horse Trainer and started asking him for help and advice while the teachers stopped offering unnecessary help and waited to be asked before giving help.
As a result Mohammed has flourished both at the stables and at school. His self esteem has rocketed, he now has friends at school and is attending all of his classes. Instead of focusing on his limitations and difficulties Mohammed and those around him now value his strengths. This has transformed his life in all areas.”
