Meet Obie 🐾

Obie is our official SLTH Meet and Greet dog, hurrying to welcome every visitor to the yard, patiently accepting patting on the head and reciprocating with face licks if you get close enough.

For many of our young people, visiting our yard for the first time can be difficult; they don’t know what to expect, and we have yet to earn their trust. Obie helps break down these barriers and sets the tone for the work ahead. Much loved by our young people and all the staff, you will find him pacing the car park most days or staring you down at lunchtime, hoping for an invitation to join in 😋

“The whole volunteering experience has been amazing. The SLTH team were superb to work with, and to see the transformations in the young people really gratifying. What a magical space you, your team and the horses have created - can't gush enough about how fab it is. I've learnt an enormous amount, and had a great insight into such a different modality of working from the static, clinic bound talking therapy that I'm used to”

We have a range of opportunities available; whether you have experience working with horses, mental health or something else entirely - get in touch.

Recommendation for drainage and structural engineers needed! 2025 is the year we hope to start the next phase of our build (more on that in coming months!). To get final costs so we know our fundraising target we need a drainage engineer and structural engineer to do calculations. Can any of our followers recommend firms who would be able to help us and price fairly for a charity?

2024 in review - October

October can be a busy time in the yard. There are plenty of jobs, both big and small, to get done before the cold settles in.

Here at SLTH, we are very grateful to our wonderful volunteers who are willing to chip in and get stuff done - like Annie (pictured) doing her green-fingered magic in the area around the new therapy room. Then during the October half-term, our current students stepped up and volunteered one of their holiday days to help us get the yard looking s***k and span!

September was fun! We were invited to the BBC Make A Difference Awards ceremony to represent our longest-serving equine staff member, Thomas, who was one of the four nominees in the animal category.
For our annual Open Day, we teamed up with Barnet Parent Champions from to deliver a Barnet Health and Wellbeing event for our community. Pictured is the Barnet Mayor, who kindly agreed to open the event!

Back in August, we launched a fundraising campaign to help us get our yard ready for winter. During the winter of 2023, we learned the hard way that our new site in Mays Lane is prone to flooding and had to cancel over a hundred sessions for our young people. This year, we left nothing to chance, and thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the Morrisons foundations and support from our partners and , we have been able to get our yard in a much better shape! 🙏

Throwback to July 2024, when we had the pleasure of hosting the National Lottery branding team for a teambuilding session with a difference! The team took it all in their stride and put on a brave face to experience the power of equine-assisted learning.

Healing Horses

At our dedicated stables in Edgware, North London, we see between 250 and 300 young people each year, helping them to overcome mental health, learning disability or behavioural challenges through working with horses on our Equine Therapy, Education and Work Experience programmes. We also run an After School Club and hold day camps in school holidays.

Last year, 52% of our clients had Special Educational Needs and 46% had either current or past Safeguarding involvement. With our help, 89% said that their confidence had increased and 82% felt that their communication skills had improved.

Mohammed is a typical success story:

“Mohammed has been attending an education course this term with his school. Mohammed has an autism diagnosis, various mental health diagnoses and a registered physical disability. At school his anxiety was crippling him, he wasn't attending classes and had no relationships with other students. On his first day with us his school staff and other students all treated Mohammed as though he was less capable than the others due to his disability and anxiety. The teachers jumped to help him and give him support before he'd had a chance to attempt a task himself and the students did things for him instead of waiting and letting Mohammed have a go. Mohammed accepted this help in a withdrawn and depressed way without any protest.
