Meet Ms Kitty, a small to medium Labrador mix breed pup about 4 months old who continues to blossom and thrive in rescue. After she was heartlessly abandoned rescue stepped in and has lovingly reenforced her indomitable spirit and nurtured her sweet nature. Kitty gets along with dogs, cats and even chickens. Everyone it seems is a potential playmate. As you can see from her pictures, Kitty also loves being with children. She s crate trained and is working on house training. She has learned to walk well on a leash and she adores any outing. She is super cuddly and very inquisitive and will sit and watch her foster mom cook for hours. Kitty loves toys, enjoys car rides and is always ready for the next adventure.
Foster Mom Everyone Loves Pizza to share
how Kitty is her a precious little kitchen buddy.
She loves to snuggle while I watch tv yet she is happy to play with others when I can’t be her entertainment. Kitty is an ideal lovable companion!

NEEDS A HOME:

Panini (female)
Breed: Terrier Mix
Age: 3 years
Weight: 42 lbs.
Dogs: Selective
Kids: Yes
Cats: Unknown
Energy Level: Medium-High

Poor Panini's family has to change their living situations and cannot take Panini with them. They are very sad and want to make sure she goes to a loving home where she can get the attention and exercise she deserves. Panini has been with her previous family for 2 years. She originally came from a shelter in NJ. Panini used to go to the dog park, but since she has not been exposed to dogs in awhile, besides her housemate, King, she now gets over anxious/excited when she sees another dog, even on the television. She either needs to be the only dog in the home or her new family will need to have experience with slow exposure and introductions.

As far as humans go, Panini gets along with everyone and loves attention. If no one is paying attention to her, she will do something quirky to make sure you know she is there. She likes going on car rides and playing ball or with her chew toy with her human(s). She knows sit, stay, wait, paw, go, & okay. She's very food motivated and eager to learn new tricks as well.
After exercising she likes to cuddle.

If you would like to be considered to adopt Panini, please complete the adoption application for Paniini online here: http://www.doubledogrescuevolunteers.org/adoption_application.php?dog=Panini

King (male)
Breed: Pit Mix
Age: 6 in February (DOB 2/14/2018)
Weight: 71 lbs.

Good with kids: Yes

Energy: Medium

Poor King has a history of being left behind. When King was about 2 years old he found himself abandoned by the person he knew and loved. He ended up with a family member after being left by his initial owner but was too quick to spent his days playing escape artist from this temporary home in an attempt to try to take matters into his own paws to seek out a more loving home. After several of his own family searches and several friendly rides with Animal Control, DDR stepped in to help find him a home. And we did. He has been with a family for 3+ years that he never tried to escape. Now that devastated family is being forced to move into a living situation in which they can not take him.

Luckily, despite all of this, King still has endless love to give. King is described as both lazy and energetic at the same time. When it's time to rest, King is such a cuddler who loves to give and get affection. When it comes to time to play, his favorite games to play with his humans are ball, gentle tug of war, and with his toys. King has been through training and knows all of his basic commands and then some, like sit, stay, wait, paw, go, and okay. All King's previous family wants is for his next home to be his last and for him to have all the love her deserves and more. If you think you might be that family, please reach out.

If you would like to be considered to adopt King, please complete the adoption application for King online here: http://www.doubledogrescuevolunteers.org/adoption_application.php?dog=King

Winston, Winston, Winston!

It's the New Year and Winston is still waiting to find his fur-ever home. All of his friends who were posted for adoption in 2023 have gotten to go home, except for him.

Everyone knows breed discrimination exists, but did you know that Hounds are one of the most underrated and overlooked dog breeds when it comes to adoption? While they may not be banned by home insurance companies for being dangerous, they are just as likely, if not more likely, to be scrolled past without a second thought when people are surfing the web looking for a family companion. Trends in dog ownership and breed popularity is definitely contributing to the number of Hound dogs in shelters. Let's not let Winston be a victim of discrimination. Instead, let's talk about the qualities that make Winston and Hounds like him amazing family members.

To name just a few they:
Are highly intelligent.
Are Low maintenance as far as grooming and other care.
Are great cuddlers. When properly exercised, they are happy to lay by the fire at your feet or lay on the couch to watch Netflix in your arms.
Like to work. They enjoy investing time and energy in things they excel at. If you are at all athletic and/or competitive, a Hound is your type of dog.
Are loyal. Hounds will socialize with other humans but will bond to you.
Save lives. Hounds keen sense of smell has often allowed them to alert their families when something is awry.

Do you own a Hound? If yes, please respond with what makes you a proud Hound owner? Bonus points if you share a photo.

IZZY NEEDS A FOSTER!

Poor Izzy has been in the kennel for months, even through the holiday, because she does not have a foster home to call her own. Our poor girl is starting to get kennel fatigue and could really benefit from a break!

Izzy is a special case, in that she needs to be the only dog in the home BUT she is great with dogs outside of the home. She even does great at doggy day care! Even dog visitors from time to time are okay. As long as she doesn't have to share her personal space forever.

If you can fostering and/or potentially adopting Izzy, please contact Michelle at [email protected].

Izzy (female)
Breed: German Shepherd/Terrier Mix
Age: 3 years old
Weight: 65 lbs.
Good with dogs: Yes
Good with cats: Unknown
Good with kids: Yes
Energy is Med-High

Izzy is such a sweet girl! She is wonderful with people, especially kids. She loves to play with tennis balls, go for walks and on car rides. She loves to snuggle, watch tv with her humans, look out the window and lay in the grass on a sunny day. She shows you her belly, gives you her paw and spins by command. Her “play bow” when you get home and crazy tail will always make you smile. Her loud morning yawns and before bedtime sighs will win you over every time.

Izzy is good around human food and rarely begs. She is a licker though so if it’s something she really likes she might try to sneak her anteater like tongue in. She is coming around to having her teeth brushed and her ears/paws cleaned, but has always been super tolerant of being brushed. Her nails grow fast and she has short German Shepherd hair so we’d recommend furminator products and/or grooming services. She is a little weary of the vet so they’ll need to be gentle and give her extra treats.

Izzy's ears are super expressive and you’ll know if she’s scared or happy simply by looking at them. She doesn’t like fireworks or thunderstorms, so she’ll need extra pets. She will happily sleep in your bed if you let her, usually at the foot curled in an adorable ball. She likes to be independent and will sit in the yard or go lay in a room solo. When she’s tired, she’ll go up to bed even if we aren’t ready yet. She has lots of energy and definitely needs to stay active. She doesn’t love being home alone but can do so as long as you take her for walks afterward. She likes treats, ice cubes and all kinds of cheese. She’s a people dog and really just wants to be with her humans whether it be at home or out in the world. She’s protective and loving. She’s quirky and funny. She truly is deserving of the best home and so much love.

RIP our Sweet ROSE (fka Melrose):
"I had been meaning to get in touch, I hope you both had a good holiday. We did have a good holiday; until today, when Rose suddenly and unexpectedly collapsed and died in the yard this morning. We didn't even have time to get her to the emergency hospital once we knew something was seriously wrong. It was a complete shock. True that she had been getting old on me and I was starting to see the signs of her slowing down, and at times she seemed kind of winded after too much activity, but she always bounced right back. She was very wound up playing with her toys when my parents were here for Christmas, and I did feel like she was getting more worn out afterwards, so I was a little concerned, but seeing as she would seem fine after a little rest, and would get right back to the toys, and her appetite never wavered, I just had a mental note that we would schedule a checkup after the holiday. I know she was getting old on me, but we did a full senior workup with xrays and bloodwork in August and all had looked good. She was still working out at Wizard of Paws right before Christmas, so the Wizard staff was shocked also, I'm just in complete shock, I did not see it coming. I'm completely devastated. I had taken on a second job as a realtor recently. The ultimate goal was to switch careers and do real estate full time so that I could spend more time with Rose. I thought the hours would be more flexible, but of course since I have to pay my bills, i couldn't just take a leap right into full time real estate, I had to keep my full time job while building my real estate clientele, so I was feeling guilty about spending less time with Rose, (even though the goal was more time with Rose, although of course she did not know that). My boyfriend is close to retirement age, so he is winding down his work, and was filling in caring for Rose when I was busy working. Therefore, those two really bonded over the past couple months, so he is pretty devastated now as well. I know that Rose had to be at least about 11 years old and that is old for a big dog, but she still seemed so youthful and playful right up until the end, that I was lulled into a false sense of having more time. I've been working so hard and it just feels like it was all for nothing now, because all I want is my dog! Well, you guys know how it goes. It's so hard to lose them. She was the most important thing in my life and I will treasure the memories we had forever, I will always be thankful to you guys for giving her to me. We had a special fancy senior dog professional photo shoot done back in July and I thought you would enjoy some of the pictures, I had been meaning to send some to you, and I am also attaching a favorite photo of her from a couple months ago when she was playing with her toys and all happy, it was a favorite of mine and went on some Christmas cards. I hope that you both are doing well and I'm wishing you a happy new year. From the bottom of my broken heart, I thank you again for giving me my special girl. I will treasure the 6+ years we had together, forever!"

Help Us Make 2024 Tater's Year

Tater has just spent his second Christmas in the shelter; he came in as a sad, malnourished, stray in October of 2021, and all he wants is a family to call his own. Tater is a shelter favorite and won the hearts of the staff and volunteers who decided to pull out all the stops for him. Double Dog was asked in October 2023 to bring Tater into our rescue, sadly we have been extremely short on foster homes over the past year which has made bringing up north impossible. One of the shelter volunteers gifted Tater with the next best gift anyone could have given him (second only to a forever home), she sent him to charm school! 🙂 Tater spent 6 weeks in training, where he learned basic commands, leash manners, and just to be an all around good boy! He was so adored by the trainer that he has been invited to come back three days a week to enjoy doggie daycare with the other pups at the facility. Tater has been exposed to dozens of dogs of all sizes and breeds, from a Malinois to a tiny Papillon, and he has played well and gotten along beautifully with everyone!
So, it is our January goal to get Tater to the Northeast and into a home! Help us to help make this happen for this sweet and handsome boy, he so deserves it, he has waited patiently for his perfect family without giving up hope. We know some lucky folks are going to see this and just KNOW he is THE ONE. If interested in Tater, fill out an application for him here, he'll be waiting...

Introducing “Eddie”!

He is a beautiful 7 month old male hound mix. He’s as sweet as can be! Loves to cuddle and enjoys the company of animals and humans. He is non-reactive towards other dogs and people when he goes on walks. He is low to medium energy.
“Eddie” came up to CT from NC on 12/16 in the hopes of giving him a better chance at finding his forever home. This special pup has so much love to give! He is being fostered in the Farmington Valley and is available for meet and greets.

Could this little guy with the big paws become a big part of your family?

Winston is urgently in need of new placement. He's a great dog but is chasing the elderly and increasingly fragile cat in the home. If you are able to foster, or interested in adopting Winston, please contact Michelle at [email protected].

Winston (male)
Breed: Foxhound Mix
Age: 4 yrs. old
Weight: 50 lbs.
Good with dogs: Absolutely!
Good with cats: No
Good with kids: Older due to energy level
Energy Level: Medium-High

Available for Adoption: 11/20/2023 (Currently accepting applications) Your application must be approved prior to any meeting.

Meet Winston. Winston is a true hound dog, but not the crying kind! While he sleeps great in his crate throw the night, during the day he prefers to run and chase his friends. He is a favorite at his Doggie Day Camp where he gets to stretch his legs and play all day. He consistently gets compliments from his counselors and caretakers on his good behavior and his ability to play well with other dogs. A home with other dogs to keep him company would be a great fit. He loves long walks in the woods and is most successful in less populated locations. A home in a rural setting with a fenced-in yard would be perfect for Winston.

Winston is lovable, goofy, fun to be around, and will curl up with you on the couch after a long day. He will greet you happily with a wagging tail when you come home. He will often roll over for belly rubs at visitors' feet! He is very expressive with his eyes. And it is SO cute when he naps in a tight coil on the couch near you in the evening. When playing with humans, he prefers tug-of-war to fetching. He also enjoys long walks where he can sniff out animals, and car rides with his head out the window.

Ozzy is a charming little lowrider about 1 year old who is ready to bring so much joy to a lucky new family. He was found stray and taken to a shelter - somehow nobody came looking for this little angel. We aren’t quite sure of his breed mix, but we’re sure he’s crazy cute and as sweet as pie.
His foster mom says “Ozzy is a complete love bug, as sweet as he can be. He loves all dogs. He is a huge fan of chew toys. He already knows sit, and if you ask him to speak, he chomp
his teeth!!! Someone will be winning the lottery with him.”
Ozzy is house broken and crate trained, neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vetting. If you’d like to bring Ozzy into your family and spoil him forever, please email [email protected] for an application.
