Update on Sandy:
She’s doing fantastic! So well the vet was able to spay & rack her yesterday. She’s recovering well with her foster ❤️🐾
We are sad to announce that we had to say goodbye to our Sadie today. Sadie came to WEGDR in March of 2015 as a senior with her brother Hank. The 2 were a bonded pair. Hank passed away last year. Sadie’s health had been declining over the last several months. She was loosing weight quickly and had several abscesses we kept addressing. Even with the best care possible, we couldn’t get her health turned around. During her vet visit today, a large cancerous tumor was found behind her shoulder blade. Sadie had been doing her best to hide it from everyone, but today she showed us she was tired and was ready to go see Hank, so we gave her all of our love and granted her final request. She was 15 years old and one of the sweetest Danes we’ve ever had the pleasure of caring for.
Please keep Sadie’s foster family in your thoughts and prayers. They have cared for her for 5 years as if she had always been theirs. She was most definitely a huge part of their family. They gave her the best 5 years of her life. It’s a great loss to them. We are so grateful for all they did for Sadie. ❤️
Rest In Peace Sadie ❤️🌈🐾
UPDATE ON KEPLAR
Keplar did make it to his foster home yesterday. This is him walking 2 days ago. However since then he’s had trouble with both legs. Late yesterday he was refusing to walk anymore. Were were hoping he just overdid it earlier but this morning that was obviously not the case. He is back at the vet and we are waiting to find out what’s going on and what can be done from here.
We will update as we can. This is all the info we have now. We appreciate your patience for updates!!
We are heartbroken to say Brenda has gained her wings and is no longer with us 💔 Last night Brenda’s white blood cell count was climbing and her hematocrit level was 34. We knew something was not right. She went in for surgery earlier today. Unfortunately, once opened up her medical team found her entire abdomen covered by cancer. Every organ was effected. Our vet could tell that at some point in her life her spleen had been removed which is usually done because sarcoma is found to be present. Our best guess is this is where her cancer originated from. We now know the cancer was the cause of her pain and infections. We made the difficult decision not to wake her up. As hard of a decision as it was, it would have been cruel to bring her back for a week or two of suffering.
Brenda was not with us long but we loved her very much already. Her last few days were filled with lots of love from us and our vets. She received a much needed bath. She was treated to remove all of the fleas on her. Her ears had been cleaned and her ear infection was being treated. She was on pain medications and antiobiotics to make her as comfortable as possible. She was given food and treats and gobbled them up. She had a warm bed and loving hands to care for her. We would have done anything for Brenda. Cancer sucks.
We are having her privately cremated because that’s what she deserves. Any donations made in honor of Brenda will go towards her medical bill and her cremation. Thank you all for loving her with us ❤️ Rest In Peace Brenda ❤️

We are asked quite often what is the best way to introduce 2 new dogs. Here's one way (there are several) that we try at the rescue...
Our 2 volunteers are walking Garth & Rex together to slowly introduce them to each other and see how they react. Garth is older and calmer than Rex who is a young pup. Here they both are being walked together on neutral territory (meaning neither identifies this location as "theirs"). At first they are walked with space between with our volunteers keeping each one focused on their own path. So far so good and there's not too much interest between them. After a short walk the rear dog (Garth) is brought up closer behind the lead (Rex) for a brief meeting and sniff check. Then back to walking at a relaxed pace but closer together. Rex and Garth walked leashed together for a while. Both were well behaved! They had some supervised off leash time together and did great. Rex is now being fostered with Garth (adopted last weekend by his foster mom) and they are doing wonderful together!
Hope this helps you if you are planning on introducing a new member to your current pack!
UPDATE ON JAX
Jax saw the wonderful Dr. Jones at Lakeside Animal Hospital on Monday! Dr. Jones believes Jax is only 7-8 yrs old. His skin infection is caused by the enormous amount of fleas this boy had on him. Those are gone forever now! He did have green nasal discharge likely due to an upper respiratory infection from the animal shelter. This is quite normal.
Jax also has a bad clostridium infection in his stool causing diarrhea. He also shows some nerve deficits in rear end but it's not severe at this time. He's a lumpy & bumpy older gentleman but none of his lumps and bumps are worrisome!! He's also heartworm negative!!
Jax's bloodwork showed an elevated white blood cell count however that goes hand in hand with his skin, stool, and upper respiratory infections. He's been placed on multiple medications and we are hopeful his levels will be normal at his recheck.
His Liver, kidneys, and heart all seem well!!
His foster mom reports he's been a perfect gentleman in the house. She had to beg him to lay on soft bedding at first but he's getting the hang of it now ;) He follows her around everywhere, always checking on her and keeps a close eye on her through the window when she's outside 😉
Here's a short video of one of his many scrub downs upon his arrival from the shelter. His sweetness shines through!! ❤️🐾❤️
Thank you to all of our volunteers who stayed late after a long day at the yard sale to help bathe & love on Jax! He got the royal treatment and is starting his new journey. We could not do this without all of your help 😘
Haiti is having a blast at Pet Fest in the flag chasing booth! Bring your pups out to run off some energy. Our booth is right across from the flag chasing. Haiti, Pedro, and Everest are here today for you to meet!
