A dogs neck is a very delicate part of their body!

The neck and cervical spine contain the spinal cord, this is where the nerves of the front legs originate. Excessive paw licking is quite often misdiagnosed as allergies when it is in fact pain.

Putting stress on the neck can cause painful disc damage and shoulder problems

A dog has the same number of vertebrae as a giraffe (think about that before choking a dog)

One of the most important structures of the nervous system "The Vagus Nerve" originates at neck level and this controls life essential organs like lung, heart, stomach, and intestinal tract.

The Thyroid gland is located in the neck. If this gets inflamed the immune system trys to remove the inflamed cells.
The destruction of the Thyroid gland cells can lead to hypothyroidism

Increased pressure put on the Jugular vein can cause seizures
Ear and Eye issues are significantly increased

Being je**ed on a lead causes whiplash and bruising.

The epidermis of a dog is only 3-5 cells thick
A humans is 10-15 cells thick

So WHY would anyone want to use a noose ....sorry I mean a slip lead?

A well fitted Y shaped harness is the safest and kindest peice of equipment to use.

FRAUDULENT MICROCHIP DATABASES WARNING:

PetsMicrochip, PetMicrochip, PetChipDetails, All Paws and UKPetChipRegistry are SCAM MICROCHIP DATABASES.

You are paying for a service that is not a Government approved pet database. You will also be potentially leaving yourself vulnerable to identity fraud as your personal details are on their website and in some instances, they are making this information available to the public. But worse still if your dog or cat are lost and their microchip registration is checked, the chip will either show as unregistered or with no contact information to reach you.

OFFICIAL LIST OF DATABASES THAT MEET GOVERNMENT STANDARDS: https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-cat-microchipped

If you recognise that you may have accidentally signed up to any of these sites – we hope you have sufficient information to know what to do next. Whilst you’ll be looking to receive your funds back from them, it’s more important that you register your pet with an approved pet microchip database immediately – a pet can go missing at any time and it’s important that vets and wardens are able to obtain your contact details in that situation.

All is not lost!

Check your microchip registration is on a compliant database that meets Government standards

You can check out your microchip registration on this which cross checks all the 22 official databases instantly: https://www.petdatabase.com/chip-checker

If you know you have registered on one of the fraudulent databases please register on one of these two databases that both meet UK Government standards:

PetDatabase: Cheaper than others and free to update contact information at anytime, they send a ping to your mobile phone when your pet’s microchip has been scanned: https://petdatabase.com

HomeAgain: are the only free database: https://www.homeagain.co.uk

This is the full list of the 22 Government approved databases, if you are not on one of these you could receive a £500 fine and another fine for out of date contact information. This will also apply to cats from 10th June 2024: https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-cat-microchipped

If you cannot find your pet’s microchip number the following might help:

🐾 Contact your usual vet as they may have recorded the number on their client records.

🐾 Contact the microchip implanter, if not your usual vet.

🐾 Take your pet to be scanned at your local vet, rescue centre or dog warden service.

Defra can be contacted directly by email if you have any problem with the way your pet’s microchip database is working: [email protected]

All microchip databases are required to have a back up system incase they stop trading or their websites go down.

JUST TO MAKE THINGS CLEAR FOR EVERYONE.

We are foster based.
This means we do not have or use kennels.

Due to us being foster based, all dogs go into a foster home for assessment and to have any vet work taken care of, including neutering.

We have to charge adoption fees to cover the costs we as a rescue are charged by vets, transport companies etc.

Adoption fees ARE NOT charged until each dog has found a forever home AFTER being in foster for a minimum period of time.

Here is a basic break down of the minimum costs to us as a rescue, because caring for dogs that have been surrendered COSTS MONEY.

For example:

Full course of vaccines from £90 per dog

Boosters from £40 per dog

Microchip £10-30 per dog

Vet consults from £30 per visit.

Spay/castrate from £195

Transport from 26p per mile depending on the company used.

So for those few people who have been accusing us of being a scam, con artists, f*king mugs etc the last few days because they don't seem to be able to fathom having a dog in a foster home PRIOR to getting adopted costs the rescue money, these are the facts.

So please if you don't understand why we charge adoption fees or ask surrendering owners what a dog will be coming into our care with, ask us questions and wait for the response.
Do not make accusations and throw a temper tantrum without proof, then block us to prevent us explaining our procedures because you missunderstand how or why we work this way.

Any one wishing to discuss procedures or fees, please email our legal dept [email protected] they will explain everything to you if you need more clarity.

*We do not pay medical fees etc for dogs who are not in one of our approved foster homes*

Fosters are always needed.

Vet fees are covered by the rescue while in foster and are paid directly to the vet for agreed treatments prior to any appointment.

If you can foster, please read the post below in full and then send us a message to discuss.

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED!!!

We are now more than ever in need of Foster homes

Hundreds of surrender requests a week that we are turning away due to no foster spaces or the people can't wait for us to try and place a dog.

Times are desperate, very very desperate and they arent getting any better.

If you wish to foster, these are the minimum requirements:

MUST be 25 or over

Fencing/walls must be of a solid construction and 6ft min height.

Gates must be secured and lockable

Resident dogs MUST be neutered

Ideally having large or giant breed experience would be beneficial but not in all cases.

Children must be dog savvy/experienced around dogs.

You MUST be prepared to attend Vet appointments when instructed to for the dog you foster. This will include medical check ups, vaccines, neutering etc. Rescue will pay the vet directly prior to any appointment and will have agreed all treatments before the appointment.

If you can offer a foster space, please send us a facebook message and respond to automated message.

All applicants will be subject to homechecks and references and will include verifying ID and address.

Dog Owners – Please respect the lead

✅ Do check with other owners before letting your dog interact with a dog on the lead

✅ Do follow the 3 second rule – they can sniff and introduce themselves but after 3 seconds take them away – it's best to keep meetings brief

✅ Do remember that a seemingly friendly dog may lash out if approached when on a lead

❌ Don’t let your dog run over to a dog which is being kept on a lead

❌ Don’t let your dog off the lead if you cannot easily recall them

Did you know that the senior research scientist David Mech, whose book into hierarchy in wolf packs created the 'alpha theory' idea, then went on to disprove his own work with a later more naturalistic study? 😮

Although wolves and domestic dogs are worlds apart nowadays, David Mech's original book on captive wolves is still used regularly as evidence for alpha-based and dominance training styles. Touting you need to act like a wolf and an alpha and put your dog in their place so they respect you. However, even if domestic dogs and wolves were closer in how they acted than they are, David Mech went on to do further research and instead found that rather than one domineering 'alpha' wolves actually work as a family group with the parents leading the pack. That doesn't sound that far off our human families really does it? In fact, despite what 'alpha theory' states in regards to an 'alpha' wolf always eating first, in reality wolf parents often feed their youngest, most vulnerable offspring first.

The issue with the first study the book used is it was based on captive wolves and not wild wolves and how they behaved in their natural habitat, once David Mech realised his mistakes he did more research, and with new understanding and data he has since gone on to try and repair the damage his original study has done in how we view wolves, and by extension dogs. This is what scientific study is about, updating with the times and the most up to date information. I give huge props to David Mech for instead of trying to save his ego and stick to what he said in his original work, he has followed the science and admitted the flaws of his original study, bringing new knowledge and research forward.

It is a shame that the original idea is still so prevalent in our cultural knowledge and understanding of wolves, whereas the later study is less well known to the masses. I can only hope that will also change over time by us bringing the more up to date information to the forefront. 🐺

You can check out the study mentioned in the graphic for yourself here: https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1343&context=usgsnpwrc

FOSTER TO ADOPT ONCE SETTLED

Dior
4/5 years old
Pocket Bully

House trained
Crate trained

Vaccinated and chipped

Dior has done well in her current setting for the last 8-10 weeks, but can't make further progress as she needs specific requirements from a home which have been assessed during our time with her.

Dior's requirements are very specific and this is for her own mental wellbeing:

FEMALE owner, terrified of men and this will take a very long time to overcome.

MUST have a secure garden

NO resident pets- when she has met dogs outside (vet trips) she has been interested but nervous so we believe placing her as an only dog is best for her at this time as she needs slow careful intros with dogs but may in time be able to live with a calm small dog.

Dior came from a home with young children which she was fine with but has been in a very quiet adult only home for the last few months since her arrival.

A garden is an absolute must for Dior as she is too scared to walk more than a few doors down the street before she is defacating in fear.

You will need to understand that when she moves she will probably be very quiet and aloof for several days while she settles to your routine but once she likes you she'll be your best friend.

Requirements for Dior:

MUST be 25 or over

MUST be female owner

MUST have a secure garden/outdoor area

MUST have time and patience to bond with her at her pace

Home environment should be calm and peaceful.

Please understand Dior's fear of men and the outside world is not just simply nervous/anxious behaviours. She had a very traumatic start to her life (prior to being with the surrendering owner) and it has had a long lasting affect on her.

She has been with us around 3 months now and her needs have become very clear during that time.

If you are interested in fostering Dior with the view of adopting once she is settled in properly and has accepted you, please send us a fb message and respond to automated messages.

All applicants will be subject to home checks and references including verification of ID and address. If you are in rented property you will be required to provide written proof of landlord permission to keep dogs, specifically bull breeds, within the property.

Successful applicants will be required to comply with all our contracts including the requirement to train without pain, fear, force or intimidation and without the use of any aversive/balanced methods, tech or tools.

Adoption fee will apply when adopting any dog from us

RE MUZZLES:

XL Bully dogs must be muzzled and leashed in public

These are NOT adequate.
They are NOT a muzzle even though described as such.

They are a head collar NOT a muzzle and if you use these you may face issues with police etc.

Basket style muzzles are a much better option and there are many different basket styles available: standard baskervilles, greyhound style, leather, wire, biothane, vinyl box styles etc.

In the comments are better styles and who/were to get them from, please note custom made ones will take longer to get to you as made to measure for each dog
