NOW IS NOT THE TIME
NOW IS NOT THE TIME: It’s definitely not the right time to stop rewarding that recall. Colder temps, falling leaves, animals moving, new smells. That’s a recipe for a half learned recall to fall apart. Remember that when you reward your dog for coming back to you (hint: use something other than just praise) you’re not just rewarding that singular repetition, you’re building a *reinforcement history* so that when you really need it, you’re gonna get it. Don’t stop rewarding. Definitely not now, and I would say, even better if you reward it forever.
Class Sign Ups!
Thanks to all for being more patient than Bindi waiting for her turn 🤣 Beginner Level classes for Surry AND Belfast are up on our website. Message us for more info!
Lana Come!
Lana’s recall lesson: if you don’t use it, you lose it. If we want to be free to run the words every day, we are practicing every day. Sometimes people talk to us about the difference in their dogs between “practice time” and “real life time”. What we need to understand is there’s no difference for our dogs. They are learning in every interaction, every situation. If there are skills you’d like to become habits for your dog, you need to treat your real life time like you do your practice time.
High Five!
Short and sweet high five happiness with Shelby and Maple today 🥰
These WILD THINGS are in their FIRST WEEK! 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
We’ve loved switching to this semi-private model of classes, the progress is incredible. Shout out to Teddy, Suki, Lucy, their handlers and trainer Violet for a truly fantastic class!
LEVEL 1
😍😍😍 we celebrated our last week in Level 1 with this amazing group (minus Noodle 😭) I’m so impressed but the progress they’ve all made and the fun we’ve had! Great job Eilidh, Rainie, and Zuzu and their families!
Reminder that like toddlers, dogs can have fun when you include them in what you’re doing 😂 video from a few years back, as evidenced by Travis’ shorter hair and lower video quality.
JOY
JOY. In our recent seminars we spent a lot of time talking about joy. I recently went to see a client who had attended and they spoke about the changes they made to bring more joy to their dog’s day and that they ask “has the dog had enough joy today?”
I like thinking of joy instead of just enrichment or exercise because it helps us think about the specific dog. What do they like? What makes them happy? Few things are as joyful for Tess as zooming around the beach (close seconds are chasing and watching squirrels, being as close to me as possible, digging digging digging, and ham)
Why is this important? We control most if not all of our dog’s access to joy. It is our responsibility to make their lives full and that means much more than a 30 minute on leash walk and 10 minutes of fetch.
What can you do to bring more joy to your dog’s day today?
Wild Things??
Sure, this class is for Wild Things, but when you do the work, even Wild things can do some pretty amazing things. This was the first week in class for these dogs. And. They. Were. Amazing!
KSEA
NOSEWORK I starting next week on MDI. Here’s class grad Ksea working outside with her mum.
In class we base many of our training methods from real life detection training. This class will help your dog become more confident while having fun learning with you! It’s a sport for all dogs and ideal for dogs needing more confidence, injured dogs, senior dogs, young dogs with energy that need a job, ANYONE!
Class meets Thursdays at 7:00pm, more info at https://mdi.coursestorm.com/course/salty-dogs-nosework
Salty
We’re dog trainers, of course we’re super behind on this trend 😅😅 between illness, kid illness, dog illness, we’re happy to finally bring this to you.
I like to think our trainers are pretty special, here are some reasons why 🥰
😍😍
Look. Our barriers might not be the fanciest. But the connection (both eyes and brain) we were getting in this FIRST week of Level 1 was inspiring!
We love doing these small, semi-private classes. The progress the teams are able to make, the individual attention everyone gets, makes a huge difference!
