How we keep the waters topped up during minus temperatures ❄️
The first bucket has been left for the horses to break into themselves and the circular black bucket had its ice removed and refilled. Our horses have coped really well over the last few days with icy weather and some manage to break the bucket themselves but our more elderly horses have struggled to do it for themselves. Breaking ice might be the difference between your horse having a drink or not!
On our tracks I like to think of it as rooms and corridors. The corridors are narrower than the rest of the track to drive the movement, no feed is left in this space as horses only use the corridors to travel to the next room. The rooms are large spaces where the horses eat, groom, sleep, loaf and socialise. This space allows for safe space to move away from another and use of “roundabouts” like the rockery also help as a natural border. The track has NO dead ends this ensures safety and en outages continual movement. The second track has multiple paths from the main feed room which offers enrichment like salt stations, natural hedgerows, sand pit or scratching station. Corridors which include a higher area offer our horses a great vantage and view point. #horsetracksystem
This herd has been forming since October but the most recent member only arrived last week and these horses are eating loose together. It amazes me that horses can quickly adapt to new surroundings and those who previously have guarded food understand herd dynamics and feel settled enough in this environment. #horsetracksystem
