The story of Rita... a.k.a. “Little Boo”
Dogs are a gift. They come in to our lives for a reason, and somehow always change them for the better. When Rita, a.k.a. Little Boo, came in to our lives, we learned quickly that not only was she a very special soul, but one that would do something good for everyone she met. I’m Stephanie, Boo’s person. And this is the story of how Little Boo’s Bakery came about.
We adopted Boo from Peace of Mind Dog Rescue when she was approximately 10 years old. POMDR is a wonderful rescue organization based in Pacific Grove, CA that generally focuses on the needs of senior dogs who need homes to live and love for the rest of their golden years. As mentioned in her adoption story on the POMDR website, “Rita came to POMDR from the Kern Animal Shelter in bad shape. Her fur was overgrown and badly matted. She was barely recognizable as a dog. She looked more like a ball of filthy fur. Underneath all that fur were two eyeballs that were bulging with untreated glaucoma. They were both at risk of bursting at any time. She underwent immediate surgery to have both eyes removed.” After being adopted into a home that could no longer care for her, Boo went to a foster home that happened to be the bridge into her forever home. Gayle Jackson, an experienced and loving foster mom (also my aunt) who volunteers for POMDR, brought Boo into her house. She introduced Boo to our family, and was permanently adopted by myself shortly after.
Now, if there’s one thing you should know about my little Boo, it was that she was a fighter, a survivor, and had an attitude towards life that proved she didn’t need anyone feeling sorry for her. Without her eyes, she could still jump on the sofa, navigate through the halls of any house by herself, and enjoyed her walks. But most of all, she loved like no human ever did her wrong. She was nothing short of an inspiration to me. When she passed away on August 4, 2017, she certainly took pieces of our hearts with her. But in keeping with Boo’s personality; we decided to turn our frowns upside down and create something good.
Our goal is to carry on Boo’s story through our delicious and simple cookies. By combining something Boo loved (food, food, and more food) and a cause that I felt very passionately about, I came up with the idea of Little Boo’s Bakery. With the amazing help of my auntie Cheryl, we are baking cookies for a cause. Made as a healthy alternative, and with lots of love, our cookies are sold to help raise money for rescue shelters. 50% of the net proceeds will be donated. Every dog deserves a roof over their head and meals in their bellies. Especially dogs that may have a harder time finding a home because they are older or have special needs. And since my dream of winning the lottery and spending it all on creating the world’s largest dog sanctuary may be a tad far-fetched, my aunt and I are going with the cookie thing.
