If I asked you to name three things these two have in common, your list would probably start like this:
1. Both adorable herding dogs
2. Both wearing muzzles
The 3rd thing might surprise you:
Bean and Jammer take medication that allows them to live their best lives!
Medication can be a controversial topic in the dog training world but we know in combination with training it can change a dog and their humans lives!
These two take a daily anxiety medication (fluoxetine) and a daily pain medication (carprofen), both for different reasons!
Jammer struggled with isolation anxiety and chronic pain, with medication he’s much more comfortable being left alone and no longer panics, he is also able to live a more fulfilling life running around without pain!
Beans journey with medication is an interesting one, she started showing extreme panic over repeating noises, like the beeping from a truck backing up. We tried everything we could think of and resulted in improvement! 😅 Turns out that a large percent of dogs with noise phobias also have pain struggles. Which turned out to be true for Bean, for her some noises = pain!
Medication has truly changed the game for these two and several other SK9 kiddos, and may be something you hear us recommend talking to your vet about!
Medication can be tricky, like people, the first or second medication may not be the best fit but finding the correct one can make training so much easier for you and your dog!
When doing behavior modification we want to ensure the dog and their humans are set up for success as much as possible, sometimes that includes medication! 💊
(Or muzzles but that’s a post for another time, today enjoy these cuties keeping up their muzzle conditioning!)
