YES. It’s common for owners or handlers to say “you should discipline him”…and our response is “how is he supposed to communicate quietly with us, if we tell him not to communicate at all?” This is WHY.

Scars are NOT “just a scar”…

Scars
Some scars are visible and some are not.
Some scars involve only the surface of the skin, and some scars go deep.
Some scars are large and some are small...and there is a combination of all of those.
Even little scars can affect the whole body.

A scar isn't just a blemish.
A scar can be a saboteur of healing.

Scars need to be evaluated seriously.

We see asymmetries in way more horses than not…which raises some important considerations for saddle fit. This is an excellent description of some things to think about…

Normal is Rarely Common

Having had the honor of attending a dissection by Sharon-May Davis, it really highlighted the fact that oftentimes we’re not dealing with normal physiology of the horse when it comes to fitting. The beautiful soul that was our teacher through the dissection only presented with 17 ribs, with a false rib/transitional vertebra on the near side which, if going by the correct saddle fitting methodology of palpating the last rib and following the curvature upwards, would have landed the end of the saddle support area at L1. The only way to confirm the end of the Saddle Support Area would have been to palpate both sides to ensure it didn’t reach the lumbar spine.

If you go by the incorrect methodology of finding the last rib and going straight up, you would be sitting between L3 and L4..

How many of your fitters check both sides of the horse?
It isn’t a common practice, but it should be, and this horse truly brought home the importance of why. The saddle doesn’t only sit on the left, which is why checking important landmarks on the body needs to often be done on both sides. Not to mention, there is more often than not asymmetry not only in the shoulder size, but also placement. Not taking this into consideration will have cascading effects along the body, and on how the saddle fits the horse, and how the rider is able to be supported (or thrown off balance) by the saddle. Nothing in horses, or in saddle fitting, works exclusively, in a silo, able to be separated from influence or influencing other parts of the body. That simply isn’t how it works.

This is why taking the time to really, truly understand the body in front of you is so important. It’s not just about what looks OK outwardly, but being able to identify underlying structures, anomalies where palpable, and asymmetries that will influence movement and fit.

As with anything in the body, all the issues must be addressed simultaneously in order to achieve resolution - you cannot alleviate the postural imbalance and related compensatory tension without addressing the hoof balance issue; and vice versa.

On September 1, 2023, Merck Animal Health voluntarily recalled three batches of BANAMINE®/BANAMINE®-S (flunixin meglumine injection) 50 mg/mL in the United States, used for injection in cattle, swine and horses to the consumer level due to the presence of particulate matter.

Particulates were observed during routine quality testing and reviews for the following batches:

- BANAMINE 100mL, UIN 065474, NDC 00061-0851-03, Batch 2834102, exp Oct. 2024
(Distribution dates: March 6, 2023, to May 3, 2023)
- BANAMINE 250mL, UIN 065476, NDC 00061-0851-04, Batch 2864102, exp Nov. 2024
(Distribution dates: June 21, 2023, to July 11, 2023)
- BANAMINE-S 100mL, UIN 065477, NDC 0061-1838-30, Batch 2834103, exp Oct. 2024
(Distribution dates: March 20, 2023, to May 16, 2023)

The batch number, also known as the lot number (LOT), and expiry date (EXP) is located at the bottom right part of the bottle label. See the attached images that includes photos of each recalled bottle.

Using an injectable product that contains particulate matter may result in local irritation, swelling or infection in response to the foreign material. After intravenous administration in large animals, such as cattle or horses, particulate matter could travel to the lungs which could result in local tissue damage. To date, no adverse event reports have been received for the recalled batches.

Flunixin meglumine is a potent, non-narcotic, nonsteroidal, analgesic agent with anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity. It is approved in the US only for intravenous use in beef and dairy cattle, for intravenous and intramuscular use in horses and for intramuscular use in swine.

Customers who have received BANAMINE® and BANAMINE®-S from the batches being recalled should stop using the products and refer to their recall letter for product return instructions. Horse owners who have BANAMINE® in their barn should contact Merck or their veterinarian for help identifying the lot number and expiry date. Merck Animal Health is working with distributor partners to ensure that unused product is no longer in distribution or with customers. Merck is arranging for the return of all recalled product.

Consumers with questions regarding this recall should contact Merck Animal Health directly at 1-800-521-5767 (Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. CDT).

Adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of this product may be reported to the FDA at 1-888-FDA-VETS or online at http://www.FDA.gov/reportanimalae.

When horses are housed outside, exposure to wind can dramatically lower the ambient temperature. Be sure to take wind chill into consideration when looking at daily temps. The hair coat’s ability to retain heat is reduced when it is windy.

The easiest and most effective way to keep your horse warm when the temperatures drop is to feed additional forage.

A sedentary mature horse will need 2% more high-quality forage for every degree the temperature falls below the lower critical temperature.

Begin feeding additional hay 24 hours before cold temperatures are expected.

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays meme relates to the saddle twist/waist for the rider AND horse.

Some riders prefer a narrow twist/waist of the saddle to optimise hip function, comfort and to be closer to the horse. Whilst this maybe useful, it is important that the twist/waist of the saddle is suitable and can accommodate the horse’s conformation and back shape

Previously in trot, jump and gallop we have shown that areas of high pressure in the region of T10-T13 (region of the twist/waist) can have a significant affect on equine locomotion. Reinforcing the importance and complexities of correct saddle fit for both horse and rider
