As requested the diaphragm but again let's not just think about the torso☺️, breath needs to be felt through the whole horse, everything that is involved in the movement of the ribcage will have cause and affect around the whole body.
I have many posts about the specifics of the diaphragm and you can just search for the posts about origin insertion etc, but I find if we only talk about one thing we begin a tunnel vision of just working in one area to find and resolve an issue.
As a human who needs to work on not wearing my shoulders as earings as my ribcage shifts up I know that the first part of a healthy breath is a less stressed brain so a healthy environment for your horse with the ability to move away from perceived danger is the first step to a better working relationship between breath and the body.

This picture is only a small part of the connections rather than attachments but you get the point of whole horse
Where would you start ???

P.s dont come at me for the ribcage drawing its bloody hard even if not anatomically perfect i want to get across whole horse 🫠

It’s that time of year, when we’re seeing more client horse’s with skin funk. So here’s some timely information from the AAEP!

April showers bring…

…the increased risk of your horse developing a skin condition like rain rot, a contagious bacterial skin disease (often mistaken for a fungal condition) called dermatophilosis which is caused by the bacterium "Dermatophilus congolensis.”

How does rain rot happen?
The organism responsible for rain rot lives in the outer layer of the skin; if the skin is compromised by too much moisture or cracks, or if the horse has a weaker immune system, it’s easier for the pathogen to activate and establish an infection that causes from pinpoint to large, crusty scabs (pro tip: Your horse will NOT thank you for picking at them!).

Why should you not mistake rain rot for a fungal disease?
Antifungal medications and topicals have no effect on the bacteria responsible for rain rot, therefore diagnosing the condition correctly is critical! If left untreated, the condition can even progress to a point where it opens the door for more serious, secondary skin infections. It’s also important to note that this organism is contagious and may be passed to other horses by tack, equipment or insects, therefore disinfection of equipment is vital to prevent spread.

If you suspect your horse has rain rot, be sure to consult your veterinarian on the best treatment plan. While there are a million over-the-counter products available, your horse doctor may have cause to prescribe a specific course of action based on the severity of your horse's case.

AAETT is working so hard to better the equine supportive care industry in the interests of the horses, professionals, horse owners, and everyone invested in the industry as a whole. Please consider supporting their mission today and every day!

AAETT was founded to bring together equine professionals working to make horses' lives better, to further education, and to elevate the industry to a higher standard of care.

Our horses work hard for us. They are extremely giving creatures. Most professionals in the Equine Supportive Care Industry would tell you: we do it for the horse.

It is a way to give back to the creatures who do so much for us.

💙💛Today is Giving Tuesday💛💙

AAETT is deeply grateful for your support of our mission however fits best.

The simplest option is a straight forward donation. AAETT is a non-profit which means all donations are tax-deductible.

Reevaluating the Approach to Equine Care: A Call for Modernization

As I complete my mandatory continuing education to maintain my healthcare license, I encountered an eye-opening topic: the stark contrast between the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 and the 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 in human healthcare.

This led me to reflect on how similar patterns are playing out in equine healthcare, highlighting the need for a shift in how we care for our horses.

The 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹, still prevalent in much of equine healthcare, places the professional in control. The health provider assesses symptoms, prescribes treatments, and expects compliance from the patient (or in this case, the horse’s owner). While this model may seem efficient, it leaves no room for the patient’s preferences or input. It is an outdated, top-down approach where decisions are made for the patient, not with them.

In stark contrast, the 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 —which I am required to follow as a licensed human healthcare provider in BC, Canada — focuses on collaborative decision-making. This model respects the patient’s needs, preferences, and values. Care is designed with the patient’s input, ensuring a more personalized and responsive approach to health.

It made me think: if human healthcare has moved away from this archaic model, why is equine care still so rooted in it? Shouldn’t our horses deserve the same respect, empathy, and collaborative care that humans do?

It’s time to challenge the status quo in equine medical care. If we are required to maintain modern, patient-centered practices as licensed human healthcare professionals, why should equine professionals be any different? This isn't just a matter of preference—it's about ethics, respect, and the evolution of care.

It’s time for change. A movement toward equine care that truly considers the horse as an active participant, with treatment that reflects their individual needs, behaviors, and feedback.
