We do alot of teaching at reptile shows, giving all the info we can to beginners to try to help them be successful snake keepers. We also answer alot of messages and always stick to our "Lifetime Support" guarantee. What we don't do is share that info to social media so today is officially our first educational post. It will be long so hang on tight!

Snakes can be VERY rewarding and easy animals to maintain. The following are some beginner common questions/mistakes, not all inclusive and not full detail, but the basics:

1) Before you buy a snake, ASK QUESTIONS. If the person can't or won't answer them, WALK AWAY. Ask what the snake is feeding on. Ask what type/size of enclosure it's in. Ask about the parents, how old it is, etc. If they don't know, 🚩🚩

2) Do not try to feed your snake the day you take it home. And more importantly, if it's refusing food, do not try to feed it every day. It's nearly a guarantee that you are compounding the problem by causing undue stress. If you bought a healthy, well fed snake, it can go months without eating. It shouldn't but it can. Offer food every 5-7 days. After a couple missed meals, reach out to the breeder and ask for advice. If they won't give it to you, you bought from the wrong person, please message us.

3) This goes with the last one but it's important to stand alone. DO NOT ASSIST OR FORCE FEED YOUR SNAKE IF IT HAS GONE A FEW WEEKS WITHOUT FOOD. YOU WILL DO MUCH MORE HARM THAN GOOD. As a beginner, this is not something you should do without advice or assistance when it's appropriate, which is very, very rare.

4) Snakes don't moan, they don't cry, the don't scream. Aside from not eating, your snake has no way to communicate it's stress to you. If you think your snake is happy, but it's not eating or is very defensive in it's enclosure, something is probably wrong

5) Most important, be open to advice from trusted people in the reptile community. Most of us have the best interest of the animals at heart and will help, but you have to be willing to make the changes for the good of the animal, not for you. They are living creatures that deserve to be as comfortable as possible while in captivity. We have a responsibility to then as their keepers to give then the life that's best for them, not what is most convenient for you.

Keep in mind, this is general, and all species have different requirements. You should have some idea what those are well before you buy one.
