my Utah itinerary

About 1.5 weeks, difficulty listed, still so much I haven't done but so many of you asked. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit with milder temperatures. Some is out of reception needing knowledge of deep sand driving as well as some basic scrambling skills. Pack everything out and keep it beautiful and dog friendly please!

I grew up without traditions from immigrant parents that tried hard to assimilate by leaving behind their own customs. We didn't really celebrate the Lunar New Year, nor Christmas, or even birthdays.

I moved cities when I was 8 so I never really held onto long-term friends or shared memories. I felt like I learned about everyone else's cultures but belonged nowwhere. The suburbs with grid streets, strip malls and box stores didn't encourage meaningful relationships with the land and we didn't have family around.

Since moving to the West Coast, I've slowly created my own special traditions. I love revisiting the same areas, showing different friends my favorite places. You might have noticed the repeat photos over years as I revisit the same areas with Whiskey. There's something about acknowledging the passage of time, in order to cherish it -to be to go back to the same places with the same sounds and smells and relive the memories of the years past, to create new ones.

This past weekend I took friends out to a lake I've been going to with Whiskey since she was 4 months old. It was where she first slept in a tent, met her first horse, and *almost* stole an entire chicken. Driving back I had this smile plastered on my face. I may not have grown up with an ingrained culture but hey, we can all make our own and mine is pretty dang awesome.

I've always thought of Bourbon as invincible. She stressed me out the first year of her life running around like a nut but once I realized she never got sick or injured, I just trusted she would always be there. These last 2 weeks of her spay was hard.

Bourbon's never been on drugs (except for accidental ingestion), and she got really needy anxious on them. She was miserable not being allowed to walk, and very depressed when her incision got infected.

The cone of shame hasn't helped and instead of fighting her way through the restrictions (like Whiskey does), Bourbon just gets very very sad. I've just never seen her this down and I was scared for her. She's faced cliffs, crevasses, bears, porcupine, racoon, coyote, the *gasp* nail trimmer but she's never been sick before.

Finally, Bourbon bounced back and is now off leash like nothing happened. We're still finishing up a round of antibiotics, and still in a cone, but I'm back to walking both dogs together and planning out a summer of fun. These dogs are such an emotional rollercoaster.

Photos from Zebra canyon, not really dog-friendly as it's technical but we made it work 😉.

Utah is renown for it's exceptionally dark skies. I stupidly didn't bring my tripod and had packed really last minute (I even forgot my memory cards). I hadn't even thought about night shots but this camping spot begged for a photo.

This was hand-shot with the method of, breath-slow-and-take-10-photos-while-everyone-stays-still. .moonriver and I did this and traded off for a couple hundred snaps and got a couple pretty sharp ones in the process. This is shot at 0.8 of a second and Whiskey's tail is tucked because it was freezing. If you've got any recent phone, the night mode can be even better so try it out!

We've had happier days.

Bourbon's been recovering well from her spay on Thursday. It was so hard to see her on sedatives the first day. These past days she's been extra clingy and vocal with the drugs (metacam and gabapentin) and has been licking a hotspot on her leg but thankfully hasn't touched her stitches.

It's so sad to see her confused why she's only allowed 5min leashed walks. While B's been recovering in her onesie and now a cone (for the hotspot), I've had my fair share of sideeye and whining. Meanwhile... Whiskey has been loving the last week of solo walks and attention 😆

Photos from a month ago on a much happier morning.

Bourbon's getting spayed tomorrow and I feel pretty terrible about it. I know this is just a regular procedure but I feel like it's an elective one that I'm forcing on her. Every surgery has risks and I'm really praying this one goes well.

I've been holding off the spay since the latest studies show neutered Vizslas have "increased odds of developing mast cell cancer, lymphoma, all other cancers and fear of storms". If you're interested in reading more, Google "Evaluation of the risk and age of onset of cancer and behavioral disorders in gonadectomized Vizslas" or other recent research on neutered dogs and longevity including "A literature review on the welfare implications of gonadectomy of dogs".

Bourbon's getting older and the chances of pyometra is getting higher. Whiskey had an OSS spay around 2 years old and I just felt horrible about it. At that point it was more difficult having an intact female living in the city and needing the help of dogwalkers and dogsitters. Living outside the city made it easier to keep Bourbon intact but she really didn't make it easy on me with heats at the most inappropriate times and places. We've never had one heat start at home. Plus the last split heat cycle had me on my knees but I would never forgive myself if something happened with the surgery...

Heaven. Arizona is just heaven for photography.

I know people say you have to get off your phone in order to be present but I'm pretty sure I've saved every minute in a picture or video to be present here for the rest of my life. Throughout this trip I felt like I was walking through a sci-fi or fantasy novel. Everything just seemed unreal, too beautiful and this, this was the highlight.

2025/2018 This slot was the highlight of my trip to Utah in 2018 with Whiskey. She was 4. I've been wanting to come back and introduce Bourbon our favorite place. I think it's where teamwork, skill, and training gets tested in real life in the most beautiful place that has me already dreaming about coming back.

Whiskey's now 11 and I dare say she enjoyed this adventure as much as last time. I made sure my senior was in front leading since her experience lets me know what's needed and is able to make good decisions if we have to back up or work together.

Bourbon had some thoughts about the puddles of water, as well as some technical moves but both dogs came out with happy tails and were excited the next day for more canyons.
