With the Spirit of the Horse Barbara Ann Volk is an Applied Equine Podiatrist, Reiki practitioner, and Regional Advisor for GaWaNi Pony Boy. Barbara is also an Eclectic Artist.

She owns and operates With the Spirit of the Horse, an equine and human Holistic learning center. She uses Horses Teaching People, Applied Equine Podiatry, Yoga and Reiki to form the ground work for improving a horse’s health and well being, and a human’s health and well being, as well as helping to strengthen the relationship between horse and human. She uses the ancient arts of hitching and brai

ding to create works of art with horsehair, and can create a personal memento with your horse’s hair. She also makes hand braided bitless bridles, and can adorn any bridle with beadwork or hitched horsehair. We have a 260-acre farm in rural West Virginia. It is a combination of forest, and small farm. We are part of the forestry stewardship program, with several goals. We want to reestablish native flora and eliminate invasive species, the goal being to have a sustainable source of native and medicinal plants. The farm consists of developing organic gardens and an evolving equine retreat and sustainable living center. Horses are at the center of what we do. They provide manure for our gardens and by developing our relationships with them; we can learn how to heal ourselves in Body-Mind-Spirit.

As a hoof care provider and Holistic therapy activist, I am often asked by clients about treatment options for a variety of issues.
Here is a reasonably affordable Homeopathic first aid Kit that I recommend all horse owners have available to them.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE CHEST
FOR HORSES

Homeopathy works with the theory of like cures like. The remedy that is chosen is the one with with the most matching symptoms.
HOMEOPATHY IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR VETERINARY CARE! It is a complimentary tool. The more symptoms and modalities that you can pinpoint, the better chances of choosing the right remedy. Sometimes combinations are used. a modality is an example of things that make the symptoms better or worse and are a strong indicator of the correct remedy.
Homeopathic remedies work by inspiring the body to respond to what ever is necessary to heal the issue.
The remedies themselves are sensitive and there are specific protocols to their use.
Store them in a cool dry place; not in the refrigerator. Don’t store them near electronics or batteries etc.
If you pour out too many pellets, don’t pour them back as the remedies can be easily contaminated.
More is not better.
Don’t touch the remedy that is intended for another. If you touch it, it become your remedy.
Once you see a change, stop the remedy and allow the body to take over.

RIDING WITH BUCK
Last weekend I had the great honor and privilege of riding a clinic with Buck Brannaman. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done and one of the best experiences of my life. He is the BEST horseman I have ever seen and his understanding of the nature of both horses and people has makes him a great teacher.
We arrived on Thursday afternoon. Comanche went right onto the trailer which was great surprise to me considering he hasn’t seen a trailer in 15 years.
Friday was all ground work. It was rainy. At the beginning of each day there was Q&A. Our horses were expected to stand quietly in their square. Comanche just wanted to eat and was pushy. We were given 4 exercises to do. I felt that it went well, and our practice in the afternoon built on what we learned in the morning.
Saturday it poured!!! It was mostly ground work and some people rode for part of it. I was ankle deep in mud and it was quite slippery. I saw a side of Comanche that i didn’t recognize! He seemed on the edge of explosion. The energy of all of the horses was high that day. I decided to try to ride even though my gut said not to. I did get on but I felt stressed and he was very unsettled. I chose to dismount and finish the day on ground work. It was a very very difficult day. Afternoon practice brought some insights and improvements.
Sunday the sun came out and it was just beautiful. I decided to focus on the ground exercises. We made great progress and our afternoon practice was leaps and bounds above everything we had done so far.
Monday was another beautiful day. There was a short warm up of ground work then riding. Comanche stood quietly and respectfully during Q&A. I decided to ride. It was an absolutely amazing feeling. We were so connected and comfortable together.
I highly recommend that if you ever get the opportunity to ride in a clinic that you jump on the chance, at the very least< audit!

I had a wonderful experience today.
I worked, and went down for feeding on my way home. It was one of those warm sunny early spring days.
Old pony was lying flat out. I always take a breath when that happens. He heard me and was immediately up saying "where's dinner"?
Jem was also laid flat out! I went up to him and he was in such a deep sleep he didn't even notice when I sat down and leaned against his back. He was having galloping dreams! His hooves were going and his eyes were twitching under his eyelids.
I closed my eyes and we just galloped together for a while.

I was very happy to see some hay left this afternoon when I went to feed. I worry a bit when it is this cold. I always want them to have enough to eat.
