Perhaps this information from the New Zealand Labrador Club will help people understand why purebred Labradors cannot be a dilute color….
Genes sit at a locus (a location on a chromosome – plural loci) and the genes themselves can be expressed in different forms (called alleles) at the same locus. The generally recognised loci which control color in dogs are called ‘A’(agouti), ‘B’(brown), ‘C’(albino series), ‘D’(blue dilution), ‘E’ (extension), ‘G’ (graying), ‘M’(merle), ‘R’(roaning), ‘S’ (white spotting), ‘T’(ticking, and ‘I’( intensity) which controls the intensity of pigment.
Each gene influences the production of a protein. The effect on coat color is to influence the production and distribution of black/brown pigment (eumelanin) or red/yellow pigment (phaeomelanin)
The same genes are all present in every dog however only certain ones get “turned on” like a switch and others are off depending on the breed. In purebred Labradors, the ‘D’ gene is always turned off, just as the ‘M’ gene, the ‘C’ gene, the ‘R’ gene and more – which is why you do not get merle Labradors, albino Labradors or roan Labradors.
If the D gene is in it’s homozygous recessive form (dd) then it will “dilute” the color expression of the B locus. The dilute version of chocolate (bb) is a “silver” color, the dilute version of a black (Bb or BB) is “charcoal”, dilute version of yellow is “champagne” and the champagne dog is incapable of producing black pigment anywhere.
Weimaraners are a homozygous dilute breed, and since they were the only homozygous dilute breed during the time the first “dilute Labrador” in the world was documented, the introduction of dilution was most logically introduced by crossbreeding with Weimaraners. Paired with the fact that fraudulent AKC registrations were documented at minimally, 11%, these dilute carrying offspring were given AKC registration numbers, although they were certainly not purebred. Some silveristas have argued that the spontaneous appearance of dilute Labradors might be the result of mutation. This is a false argument since mutations do not reproduce in a typical pattern. The ‘silver’ Lab expression follows the exact same pattern as any other (dd) dilution in other breeds. The first documented “silver” was born in 1985 in the USA from a law suit happy “breeder” chronically in trouble with the courts who practiced “incestuous” inbreeding of the littermates, parents, offspring, of this aberrant color.
The ‘silver’ color was not seen in any other country until 2006 from dilute parents imported from the USA.

Day 3 John leading GCH Hunt Club Tonight's The Night in Sporting Group. This same Judge on Day 1 put Tonight up BOB with me on lead. What a great 4 days for this big guy! We are expecting 8 or 9 puppies sired by Papa Night on Saturday and this will be his 4th sired litter.
