7 years ago our family fulfilled a dream. We sold “it all”, bought an RV and set out across half the country. We landed in Dripping Springs, Texas on a hot summer day. It took 9 months in that RV but, we found out “piece of earth”.

We started with hope, sweat, and NO experience. We built a home together. We were surrounded by goats, ducks, chickens, turkeys, bees, and dogs. We cared for them and they cared for us. The lessons learned “on the farm” are irreplaceable and we will FOREVER miss my animals.

We have had the privilege, honor and blessing to make our dream of “owning a farm” a reality.

It is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I share we have relocate from “Dulcinea Ranch, Texas” to “Dulcinea Ranch, Florida?”. The question mark is because we really don’t know what our ag life in Florida will look like.

“Dulcinea Ranch, Florida” will look different. That we know. It will take time and healing, as rehoming all our animals, and selves, has taken a toll on our hearts. We know we aren’t ready to close this chapter… we just don’t know what the next one is.

This is the last set of babies we birthed just a week prior to moving. These quads are from one of my MOST amazing goats Dulcinea‘s Maia Ursula. Thank you to ALL who have followed our adventures.

Ag is hard. Hug a farmer. Buy the farm eggs from the person your friend told you about. Pay more for local meat. Find local honey. Don’t waste food. Be the one that learns about hunting, wildlife management and food preservation.

Seriously, hug a farmer. Ag is hard. And SO worth it.

Sunshine and smiles! That’s what we have on this farm today. The last 192 hours are over!!!!

🔥 We stayed as warm as possible.
🐕 The dogs had a blast.
🐐 We didn’t see our goats outside for days; they truly know what to do to take care of themselves.
🐓 🦆 The chickens and ducks spent 3 days in the hen house together. It was about 80* in there with no heat lamps needed!
🪣 They drank water from buckets we hauled from the pool and skimmed ice off of what we could.
🌾 🍖We fed THREE TIMES more food than normal.

We did great!!!! I have piles of “farm stuff” we may need one day. Well!!!! This was that day!!!! Go us for having 7 heat lamps, 20 bags of bedding, an actual truckload and a half of feed, 10 buckets, 8 goat coats, 3 dog sweaters, a swimming pool, and some other random items.

Mostly, we have VERY hard working kids. They did it. ALL. They did a HUGE amount of work with us this week. I would love to give them the day off... but guess what? Time to feed the goats guys. 😂

Thank you to everyone that reached out. Our animals are safe and will be dewormed later this week OH THE MUD THAT IS COMING. We have lots of clean up to do but tomorrow we are hoping to rest a little and clean up Sunday. Thanks again. And reach out to us if you need eggs, food, or help.

Prepare. Give love. Take love. Sometimes you lend a helping hand and sometimes you need one. That’s okay!

Finian: Mom! You’re here. I saved us!!! And... I can’t get home.

This is the face my Finian made while he was waiting for us to open my neighbors pasture gate this morning. He sure was proud of himself. I don’t know what animal he chased off but we are safer with him.

Day 7... Currently snowing. Again!
This was suppose to be the end. It is not. 168 hours down! I have no idea how many more because I can’t get the weather update to load. Going with tomorrow.
No cell service. No internet. No running water (we have a potable stockpile and non-potable pool water). No internet at my house so I borrow it a few times a day to let everyone know we’re okay.
We, and our animals are okay!!!!
It is so pretty outside with the new layer of white powder. But we are all done. The animals decided to walk outside in the snow for a second.

They are all safe, warm, dry, fed and accounted for. All 75 hanging out and venturing out. That makes me think this is almost over. They are no longer “hunkered down for the long haul” so I too and very optimistic!!!!

Here’s to warm weather soon! The animals told me so!

Update for friends and family:
We are still okay and doing fine. It is warmer today so we are getting slush with mix of ice. And that crap will likely freeze later. As it is doing already. So over ice and snow.
✅ Power is on about 30-60 minutes at a time and off 60-90 minutes at a time.
✅ Zero cellular service for days now. Borrowing weak WiFi when we have power.
✅ No water but repairs are underway! We may have some sort of water tonight or tomorrow. Yay baby!!!
✅ Tree down on the edge of the house. House has no damage. And everyone safe; kids were walking dogs when it went down and saw the entire thing. They said it was awesome. So fortunate not damage from what we can tell.
✅ ALL Animals are happy to see 30*F temps. They are fine and holding on good. Frannie has a slight foot injury (she has always had sensitive feet) and we will care for her better when we can get meds; for now we are home treating safely.
✅ We have a TON of food and are fine. We have enough water at this time.

Winter Storm 2021
Well we are doing pretty good but there have been lessons learned.
The animals are all okay eating and drinking and sticking close together.
✅ Good thing we got extra feed and hay! We will keep doing that!
✅ We have a swimming pool we put an homemade rainwater collection on. It is over 50% rainwater and at this point almost all fresh water. We may never be without a pool again if we have livestock. It is saving lives (the water is safe for animals; we checked first and had this plan in the works for years).
✅ Deep bedding. 22 bags and still going strong spreading.
✅ The chicken/duck coop is like 70* in there. Those babies are hot bodies. They are the warmest animal so far.
✅ When you aren’t informed of a plan for rolling blackouts all your prep work backfires. You have frozen, broken pipes. You have cold animals. A warning or plan would have been awesome. These blackouts are tough. We are resilient but they are TOUGH. And getting tougher.
We made a plan. We make a new plan. We haul buckets. We lay bedding. We triple feed. I have cried, prayed and we’ve done our best to keep faith. Please don’t snow tonight. We are done. We want mud. All this needs to melt into mud. And soon.
My animals hate snow. I got a few pics.

My family and I are working hard to save our animals lives. We’ve never been in single digits before. Getting to next Thursday with the same head count as today is our goal. We, like many others, are doing everything we know of to keep everyone warm, dry, eating, drinking and safe.
ETA: We and our farm are safe and prepared. I am just very worried about the forecast over the next few days. Doing all we can to keep everyone safe.

Health and safety to everyone’s herd, flock, pack and gaggle.
May the heaters and lights stay on.
Reach out to friends and family if you need anything. Once a farmer, always a farmer. And we take care of each other.

If you know anyone with livestock please say a prayer for them and let them know you’re cheering them on to pull through the next 120 hours. For many all across America this will be the hardest week they’ve ever had farming.

These sweet girls have been in training to protect livestock since they were born. They are super smart, very well mannered and socialized. They love their goats and are happy to roam with chickens, duck and turkeys. At three months old now they are ready to see what other pastures they can explore.
These girls are perfect for the active family and farm.

If you, or a family you know, is having a tough time right now and needs a Turkey this the holidays please let us know. We have a frozen 12 pound turkey we would be happy to pass along. Asking in advance so there is plenty of time to thaw, brine, cook, and enjoy.
And we will be keeping any request private!
Merry Christmas everyone. And may the last 16 days of 2020 be full of blessings and peace!

p.s. this is a store purchase turkey not one of “ours”.

Let me walk you through this recipe.
Grind venison with unrendered lard for a 90/10 fat content. Season burgers with garlic, onion powder, salt and pepper. Grill burgers and red bell pepper. Assemble burger with grilled pepper, baby lettuces, mustard, and the marinated feta you made this summer from your fresh goat milk. Enjoy!

Meet Sancho, aka Lil’ Ass. He is a Buff Brahma 🐓 and we LOVE ❤️😍🥰 him. I love any chicken with feathered feet but this guys is even more special. He is Cannon’s favorite chicken. And being Cannon’s favorite means you get all kids of special treatment. He eats out of Cannon’s hand, gets his own dish of evening treats and gets to be carried about like a king.

Brahma are one of my favorite chicken breeds and are always docile. He is a treasure to add to our flock! Thank you Ashley for letting me have him!!!! He has made himself comfortable for sure.

I try to remain positive... but the truth is farming isn’t for the faint of heart. It pulls at your heart strings, makes you dig deep and makes you find strength. Some days are longer than others, some nights bring challenges and some disappointments seem to big to fight. But, at the end of it all, you have your herd. And in your herd is where you find peace.
P.S. nothing substantial happening... just life and disappointments of COVID and hard work. Herd and farm are safe! Heart and brain are heavy.

Pup-date: Post Op
Princess Fenelope

She is home and SO happy to be home, but, she is obviously not feeling great. She’s in pain when the meds wear off and droozy when the meds kick in. Her incision looks great. Very clean, fairly small, and so fat healing good. She is SUPER IRRITATED with her shaved legs and is itchy, itchy, itchy. That seems worse than the incision at this point.

We brought home another cone for this Princess . This cone is so big she is drinking from a hamster water bottle and has to sleep in her back... but she isn’t licking her legs so that is all that matters.
She has a long road of healing. Day 1 of bed rest is done, 27 days to go! Here’s to hoping this worked. We are hoping for a healed elbow and a minimal limp at this point.

Pup-date on Princess Fenelope;
It’s surgery day...

Update 3:30pm: Surgeon called to say “Surgery was good, not a great outcome but better than expected for the condition of the break prior to surgery. Princess is recovering good. He said she was a very good girl.” She stays over night and we are still praying for healing and recovery. She will almost certainly have a limp but maybe, just maybe, it will be very minor. She has over 3 weeks of recovery still and then 3 months of bed rest and limited activity.

9:00 am - Princess is headed into leg surgery today. Her leg, specifically elbow, is not healing properly. Last Monday she developed an infection in her toe. The splint came off while the infection was treated; it’s gone and the toe is safe! However, yesterdays x-ray revealed her elbow break just isn’t healing. Scans were sent to the specialist and it was determined she needed to be seen immediately; so quickly in fact the appointment was made for 8am the following day.
Today, after another round of x-rays, it was determined she needed to have surgery immediately. So... our sweet Princess-PrinPrin-Prinny Fenelope is headed into surgery in a few hours. Princess is a fighter and has been her entire life. She should get through this with flying colors too .
If you have a few seconds a thought, prayer, whisper in the wind, or whatever you wish for healing and health for our Princess would be very much appreciate.

Day 3 - Milk Stand Training
Today went better than the last 2 days... but we aren’t quite there yet. Luna will get it.
Pro Tip - it takes time and patience for a goat, and you, to get comfortable with milking. You each deserve grace. And time. Commit to the imperfect the first few weeks and just keep trying.
